Breeding Pairs 2009
Sorry to hear of your loss Dave :camera: ... over here it's still too cold and wet and windy -Send us some of your sunshine! How about you paint the roof of your Breeding room with Solar reflect paint? it says it drops the surface temperature by 5C Also many breeders over here erect shade cloths a few feet above their aviaries/breeding rooms....

Hens Hens Everywhere!
Though you may see it as a negative, many breeders would give their right arm to breed more hens than cock birds!

2009 Pairs & Chicks
Yes I filled up all the nest boxes at the beginning of this Breeding season with Zeolite AND I also trialled using sand in the bottom of the breeding cabinets .... didn't like either of them and promptly went back to using kitty litter for both nest boxes and bottom of breeding cabinets! And Why? I hear you asking! Well in my experience the zeolite was a lot more expensive and funnily enough I had a couple of dented eggs with it and it soiled very quickly - I had been told to wash it and replace but I found that a hassle. As for the sand, well that was a disaster, it blew around the Breeding room and clogged up the seed dishes.

2009 Pairs & Chicks
Well Done Dean! Congratulations on your AI bird and all your little chickies and fertile eggs! Well I use kitty litter exclusively in the nest boxes and I haven't had the issues others have, so I guess it's a personal choice thing.

Gettin' Organised
SOFT FOOD MIX FOR BUDGIES 1. Chop up 3 CARROTS, add to Blender 2. Chop up 2 APPLES, add to Blender 3. Set Blender to 1 and blend for 1 minute, or until mixed well 4. Add 3 heaped Tablespoons of MILK POWDER or MUSCLE XL or WHEY POWDER 5. Add 2 sprigs of MINT, a handful of PARLEY, and BASIL 6. Set Blender to 1 and blend for 1 minute, or until mixed well 7. Tip mixture into large bowl 8. Add 1 cup of SUNFLOWER SEEDS, mix in thoroughly 9. Add 4-5 cups of HULLED OATS, mix in thoroughly That basically does all my birds but you'd need to make just a little bit of that to do all your birds, so maybe divide by 4- or make that amount and keep it in the fridge.

Plz Help! Hen With Lump In Front Of Her Vent Area!
okay, so I live out in the middle of no where and I am pretty sure our closest avian vet is 2 hours away....I went and sore my vet who happens to live up the road and she said the same thing either tumor or some problem with oviduct she said she should be okay to stay in with the cock as she doesnt seem to think it is a disease. So what to do what to do???? Because she has been laying and the swelling appeared from one day to another I think it's very likely that she has an inflamation of the oviduct. I would ask your vet from up the road for an anti-inflamatory drug, perhaps Baytril? I wouldn't just leave her with the cock bird, I would foster the eggs if possible and place her into a nice, warm cage on her own. Try PMing Chrymosome or Hamish as they are Vet students. Best of luck!

Rubbing Their Heads
I think you're doing the right thing with the ivomectin, :thankyou: I always take rubbing as a sign of mites or lice and treat with a suitable product first, if it persists you could explore other alternatives.

Bird Diseases Contracted Into Humans
I am so sorry to hear this. :emoticon112: Yes, there are diseases that are transmittable from Budgies to humans, the one that springs to mind is Chlamidia Psittacosis and I know Kaz caught it a couple of years ago, I am sure she will share her experience with you. Most of the information I have is that some people develop an acute sensitivity to Feather Dust and suffer respiratory diminished capacity as a result. I am not aware of any disease that would induce paralysis. Hopefully more knowledgeable people than I will post their experiences in reply to your query.
