Quarantine - 2 Locations
Hi All, A discussion on another post made me think of this. I have aviaries and my fiancee has aviaries and we live about 4 hours apart. We use recommended quarantine practices when bringing in new birds from outside sources, however because we treat all our birds simultaneously and ensure all the birds are healthy, we regularly swap birds between locations without quarantining them. As I've looked at it, it's just like having one flock, but in seperate avaiaries. We haven't had any problems so far. Can anybody see any possible problems with doing this?

Mum Of The Year!
Yes...I wondered the exact same thing. It looks similar to it's mother...but with blue cheek spots. I don't know what mutation that would be.

Allsorts aren't they!! I am staying with my fiance on the weekend, so I am going to get them out and take a closeup of each baby to post!

Mum Of The Year!
Updated picture of clutch. Cleaned the box out today...was getting a little icky. So ignore rubbish on bottom of nest box. All bubs going really well. Appears as though some are blue...that would mean that the Mum would have to be split to blue? I think? I was told if a green and blue series bird have chicks, that green will be dominant over blue. Exciting to watch them grow!!

My Babies
Does that mean the Pied Cobalt Cock was split to TCB to produce a TCB chick? Or does only the Hen need to be TCB?

My Babies
You've got some pretty babies Neat!! I particulary like the TCB cock...I'm developing a fondness for TCB's What were his parents? Also, what were the parents of your Violet TCB? I hope my babies turn out so pretty!!

Mum Of The Year!
Well...she was supposed to be having a holiday, but she had other things on her mind!! My fiance thinks he may have miscounted the bubs...so it's 6 out of 6...but still a great achievement. We're having some cold, windy weather in SA at the moment, so I just hope she's keeping them warm enough. Mind you, there are so many of them, they can keep each other warm!

Mum Of The Year!
Well, after two successful breeding seasons in my aviary I decided to send my hen 'Mellow' for a holiday in my fiance's aviary. Within the first week of her being there she had found a nestbox and found a new man and was laying her eggs. She laid 7 eggs ( her biggest clutch so far ), when the 6th egg hatched, my fiance took the 7th egg and put it under another sitting hen. I asked him to do this because Mellow has never had to feed more than 3 babies before. This morning the 7th egg hatched...so she laid 7 fertile eggs and at this stage...we have 7 babies. Here she is and her new fella... And today's pics...emailed to me from my fiance (who lives several hours away from me at the moment). You'll have to excuse the blurry photo :-) I can count 5 babies, but he says there are 6 there! Plus the 7th baby under the other hen! Fun & games!!

What Are All Mine
Why? I am not disagreeing more learning, how does Iris rings make a difference? Recessive pieds have NO iris rings. Dominant pieds do. A DF dom pied often looks very much like a recessive pied. BUT they have clearer wings, very little body colour ( the blue part ) and an intense splash of colour on the rump area. A DF dom pied also has markings around the neck and head looking like a recessive pied BUT a DF dom pied HAS either both iris rings or one iris ring on one eye and none on the other. I think I have an example of a DF Dom Pied...who looks like a Recessive Pied, but has iris rings. You can't see from this picture, but her rump is bright blue.

Boy Or Girl?
Thanks for your advice. I found this bird a while ago in a bird store and it was VERY out of condition. I brought her home as a bit of a challenge to get her back to health. She certainly did have scaley face when I found her, but I have treated her with the spot-on ivermectin and that helped no end. My vet suggested I repeat the treatment with all my birds every six months, which is nearly due. She certainly will get some R&R and special treatment to try to nurse her back to breeding condition. I would love to be able to breed her before the opportunity passes.

Boy Or Girl?

Boy Or Girl?
This budgie has me stumped...is it male or female? My feeling is female, but it's cere has so much blue on it. I've tried putting it in a breeding cage with a boy and then a female, but it didn't seem to react differently?? Also, it has a blue ring, which I think suggests it is either 4 or 10yrs old. It's a big bird, but I'm fairly sure it could only be 4 years old. Any thoughts would be appreciated!!

Tcb Hen & Violet Cocks
LOL...they were the most expensive budgies I've ever purchased!! The bird store had the two violet cocks advertised for $65 each, and the TCB hen for $30. He offered me the two cocks for $100 and $15 for the hen. I probably paid too much, but you don't see many birds like these in my local bird stores!! Meanwhile, since 'investing' in these beauties I have started the ball rolling on joining a budgie club...I'm getting serious!! PS - You'll note the cock's names "Mayfair" & "Park Lane" - the two most expensive squares on the board!!!

Is There Such A Thing?
I'm certainly no expert, but I was under the impression that Dom Pieds had a V shape on their backs? Or is that not the case with all Dom Pieds?

Tcb Hen & Violet Cocks
Thanks everyone! Now I need to do some research into TCB's and the Violet gene!!

Tcb Hen & Violet Cocks
I hadn't noticed any violet on the hen, I will look closer tomorrow in the daylight. It is possible that they are siblings, because they came from the same bird store, however the hen has a leg ring and the two cocks don't. Thanks!

Tcb Hen & Violet Cocks
Hi All, Could not resist these stunners whilst 'browsing' at my local bird store last week. Am I on the right track with their mutations? #1 'PASTEL' - A TCB (I think), I've never had a TCB before. Is she opaline aswell? Her colours are very pretty. #2 'MAYFAIR' - Now, here's where I get really stuck. Apart from beign the most amazing shade of Violet, I don't know what he is. Is he a 'clearwing' of some sort? He also has some white patches on his belly. His cere is blue, but this picture makes it look more brown. #3 'PARK LANE' - Also, the most gorgeous violet, but he has no black markings at all. I think he is a Dom Pied?? I would love to hear people's thoughts on these budgies....I was so excited to find them!

Can I Remove My Hen?
Thank you. Does anybody know a vet in SA where I could acquire the magical "one-drop ivermectin"...I actually live on Kangaroo Island and the vet here and a couple I have consulted in Adelaide have all said Parrafin Oil. I've read on the forums about ivermectin...I'd also love to get the one to put in their water every so often too, for maintenance. In the meantime, not sure of how quickly it would spread I did remove the hen and I have started treating her and the father is looking after the chicky just fine.

Can I Remove My Hen?
Hi All, My hen has developed scaley face and I need to remove her from the aviary. She is feeding one chick at the moment, who is nearly 4 weeks old. If I remove her, will the father keep feeding the chick?
