  1. I saw a set of spoons for budgie toys at the pet shop not that long ago for $40 I went home and made one but I found that the started to stick together, my dad and I put little wooden beads between each spoon this way the spoons stay spaced and they also can destroy the wooden beads.
  2. Welcome, your little one reminds me of Harley. As for pole pacing (that's what I call it) Blue does it alot. Just check that the perch has nothing that he can snag his feet and make sure that you do not use the sandpaper perch covers as these ripped open Blue's feet and freaked me out with him bleeding everywhere.
  3. I think it comes down the the bird. Harley was really easy to tame, took to it in a few days. Blue gets the concept however just can't seem to focus for long enough to really be tame. He is to busy getting distracted by things. Mozzie is to old to really tame I would just like to get her out of her bitting habbit. Flame is really quiet, such a little lady, she hardly makes a noise and just sits there for most of the day letting the other birds feed her. She does not like to step up but once out of the cage is happy to sit on my finger or shoulder while I work at the computer. So I think it comes down to the bird. I really thought Blue would be just like Harley when it came to taming but nope, Mr ADHD is to busy doing other things to think about being tame! Stick with it. Also I don't really handle my guys when they are going through Molt cause they are all grumpy old men when this is happening.
  4. I know I just wanted to hide. Add to this that I got sick on Monday and ended up in bed for the past two days got up yesterday and found two dead birds hanging off my budgie cage. So spent the day yesterday watching them for signs of illness and cleaning everything like mad! I am really hoping that is the end of everything!
  5. Wild birds are fine, their mum found them so them seem happy. Never thought of the legal ramifications, we always did this when we lived on the farm. As for the lady at number two, I have put in an offical complaint about her and also put in a complaint about the RSPCA inspector, not that I think it will go far. As for my Age I am 27.
  6. okay so my weekend started pretty bad, as some of you know the RSPCA was called on me. The next day I notice that 3 out of my four birds are going through molt. I get home on Friday to notice that Blue's head is covered in blood. Get him out start to clean him up and discover that he had broken not one but three blood feathers. Call the vet who talks me through removing them. All seems okay, next morning get up and Blue had bleed more overnight, my vet was booked solid so went to the vet down the road from me who gave me blood stop powder and gave Blue a vitiam A shot (Blue bit her for this) and $110 later I leave the vets! (May I add that this would have cost me about $40 at my normal vets) So Blue goes in the quarra cage for the next 24 hours, go out and get my hair done. Come home and Harley is bleeding, yes he has broken two blood feather on his head. So off I go, catch him, pull them put the blood stop powder on his head put him in the quarra cage with Blue and settle in for the night. I get up on Sunday to find Mozzie had overnight broken one of her blood feathers, start the whole process again, went to put her in the quarra cage figured bugger this and put them all back in the normal cage. I get up on Monday (today) and figure that Flame would have hung her self overnight but no she seems fine. I just find it really funny that they all did this, so I changed all their perches around and found one perch has this little nub thing on it and was covered in blood. That perch has been removed and I am hoping that this will be the end of the issue for this cycle of molt anyway!
  7. I think she just does not like me or Birds. Found out that some wild birds had nested in her rose bush but she wanted to cut the rose bush back so to put the nest on the ground... with three chicks in it! :nest: I picked it up and put it in our rose bush, I figured the parents would not come back but Mum said to give them 24 hours, this was yesterday and then when I checked before coming to work they all seemed to be alive, if they don't look 100% when I get home I will have to take them in and hand raise them.
  8. I have something like that but it's a yellow liquid (12 drops to ever 100ml of water) It also goes bright yellow but they seem to like it it. I leave it in the cage for 24 hours as their only water source. The other think that I watch it that you only put it in metal contains as I found that with plastic ones that it starts to grow stuff and leaves a very slimey film on the plastic. I give it to them about once a week, twice if any of them are going through molt.
  9. Thanks for your kind words. Yes I know it was number 2, I confronted her about it on the weekend and say said that she has seen me with the birds in a "tiny" cage. Well yes that would be my quarra/travel cage she would have seen me take them to and from the vets. I complained to the RSPCA, I get that they have to check up on reports like this but personal belief over wing clipping is not something that should have come up. Personally I don't like it but I have had it done in the past, other people are all for it, it's the way it goes. As for handling the birds, I explained why I did not want this to happen and the fact that he did it anyway. grrrrrr. The lady on the main switch said (and I quote) It just really annoys me, I did expalin why I did not want Harley handled it just really annoys me that he did not listen. On the plus side my Mum got stockings for all my babies that have honey sticks and new toys in all of them Lets hope this is the last I hear of it!
  10. eucalyptus is great for them and they love it, I put a branch in my birds cages and they go nuts. Not only do they eat it like mad they also love playing in the leaves and hidding. I know that Blue love the gum nuts not to eat so much but picks them up and throws them around or at the other birds!
  11. I got home yesterday afternoon to find a little note on my door to call the RSPCA. I do so not sure why I had to do this, there was no information on the little slip of paper. Anyway it seems that someone had reported me for having more then 6 birds in a small cage. This is the size of my cage It has a few more perches in it and some fresh branches oh and have 4 birds not 6 or more! So I waited for the RSPCA guy to come out, he came in and asked me a bunch of questions. I had to prove that I have had the cage longer then 24 hours, *** I even showed him my broken cage (which this one replaced and Dad and I are trying to fix so I have a back up cage) I showed him my vet accounts for all the trips that I have had down there and the test results that they give me after the inital checks. I gave him my vets number and said to call them. He then wanted to see how my birds are with a physical check. Flame was fine, Blue did not like him and got lose and flew to the high perch I have in the study and sat there and refused to come down. When it came to Harley, I explained Harleys issues and requested that we did not handle him as he had already been handled once this week. Nope that was not good enough for Mr RSPCA so I had to catch Harley for him, he then gives me a lecture about how Harley is a little underweight. I explained that he was an older bird and I was seeing the vet about this. Harley bit him. Mozzie was another issue, she freaked out when he tried to catch her, I finally asked him to leave the room, got Blue on my hand and got her to step up onto it. When he came back in she flipped, he did manage to examined her and expressed concern over her wing, explained about the vet yet again and said that I was happy for him to call them about this. Mozzie bit him something cronic, drew blood! He gave me a lecture about wing clipping and wanted to know what I had done to Harley to stop him from flying. my answers 1) Harley does not fly any more, he has not for years, expalined the situation 2) Blue does fly 3) Flame has all her feather clipped outside of the outside one on each wing, I did not do this she came like that 4) Mozzie had had one wing clipped badly, I got the other one clipped to even her out, she has since broken wing feathers nothing I can do about this but treat them. I will now be getting follow up checks. I am so annoyed it is not funny. I know it was the lady in number 2 as after he left she came out to talk to him, I could hear her asking why he was leaving the birds in my care. I have been crying about this all last night. I know that I am not the best Budgie owner, I know that I have done things wrong but I am trying.
  12. Will see about getting some oats. Thanks for that
  13. (Laughing out loud) I will try that with my dogs! Thanks for that and also thanks for the info on the eggs for the birds. Dad and I just re did the cage today (he is making a tin cap for one side of it) so I have added some more branches cause I thought that the less flight space they had the bigger they will get! Will keep you updated at the next weigh in!
  14. Thought I would give you some new pictures (I have posted them somewhere else on the board but here they are again) mozzie She has started to settle down really nice now that she is in with the other birds. Still alot of issues but least she is getting there. All my babies from left to right, Flame, Mozzie, Harley & Blue
  15. I am not sure to tell you the truth, I just remember as a kid mum would boil eggs the dogs would get the yolks and the birds would get the whites. If they can have yolks then I will give it to them at the moment my dogs get the egg yolks so guess they can just miss out from now on.
  16. Almost the same as my cage but mine has two door. I had to put mine together as well, the cage was not the issue it was those stupid bars on the stand! Here is mine
  17. okay I know that sounds funny because most cage budgie are to fat and need to lose weight. Harley dropped some condition after Queenie died, the vet said it was morning and we gave him lots of TLC (well the best you can do with a grumpy old man) he picked up and that was fine. Then with the move to the bigger cage, Blue being so hyperactive and making Harley chase him around the cage, Harley's belief that he can fly (he can't but it takes alot out of him to try) he has dropped weight again. Mum took him to the vets today for me as I am at work and the vet said to fatten him up he is fine just getting far more exercise then he has had in years. Because of the amount of "outside time" blue gets he is a good weight and the girls are young so the vet told my mum to put them on an "fattening diet" for a while to help build them up a bit and bring them back in a month for a weigh in. Issue my mother said thanks and walked out the door and never thought to ask the man what a "fattening diet" is. *bangs head against desk* So any ideas would be great At the moment they get Budgie mix I buy from a feed store Fresh fruit and veg's (Harley LOVES his snow peas and grapes) Pellets (but I think they just throw them around and not eat them) Cooked egg whites about once a week mixed in their seeds Millet seed branches Honey sticks or bells Is there something else I should add to to their diet to help Harley put on a little weight? Any help would be great
  18. Thought you might like a picture since I can now get her close enough to her to take one! Mozzie And all my babys settling in for the night And before you ask, yes I broke Quarra with Flame. Her cage got overrun by ants, I took her out and cleaned it up and washed her (because they where crawling all over her body) moved the cage and put her back and the next morning it was the same! For crying out loud the cage is in the house! Repeated the whole thing, moved her to another room and got home from work and the same thing had happened again! *bangs head against wall* Never had this issues with my big cage so I moved her to that and no more ant issues.
  19. Poor baby, I agree with with what the others have said
  20. Yeah I was really hoping that she would settle and I was not going to break quarra but the vet thought the risk was REALLY low that she had something to pass onto the other guys. Thanks for the advice
  21. Thought I would give you an update. Things where not looking good. To the point that I was really worried. I took her to the vets to have her wing looked at and we decided to medicate her for a few days. Also after talking a lot with both the vet, my father and a good friend we decided that the risk to break quarra was going to be worth it and we put her in with Harley and Blue. Mozzie had not been around other birds and was given a full bill of heath and all her test came back clean. I can't get over the change she settled within a few hours, she does not seem to care about people moving around the cage and when she does become stressed then she just wedges herself between the other boys. Changing their feed and water is not been that much of an issue. Normally I have one or both of the boys sitting on my hands while I change the dishes over she does not do that but she does come over to look at what we are doing and not panic. I have attempted to handle her a few times over the weekend, small batches with Blue and Harley close by. Blue is fascinated by her and chases her around the cage in a good way, my sister and I watched them yesterday and Harley had the biggest, "Children what do I do with them" look on his face. The really funny thing was, I took the boys into room to give them some free time and play soccer with Blue, I lie on the bed on my side and get a small ball and he stands on the bed and we "Kick" it back and forth. Harley made his way out of the cage up onto the bed and Mozzie come with him, sticking close but seemed interested in what was going on. Her wings are clipped (not by me) so she is adjusting to the fact that she can’t fly and is coping off Harley as to how to get around. It was a really good weekend. I will keep Flame in quarra till the end of the month but I glad that I went this route with Mozzie cause otherwise I would have given up on her.
  22. Quarra is still in place but she can hear my boys and does get excited about it. I think I will keep trying for the next week and see how I go, if nothing improves I might have to see if I an rehouse her to an aviry thanks
  23. Yes three sides and the top are covered during the day, she is fine untill she hears or sees someone in the room then all *** breaks lose. Yeah I know that taking her back to shelter would doom her, I guess I will just keep trying or see if I can find someone who has an aviry to take her. :fear
  24. okay I know it has only been a few days, but I am making myself sick with worry. Mozzie is not settling down, in fact she gets her self so worked up and throws herself around the cage if I am in the same room as her, the other night she snaped a wing feather cause she was working herself up so much! I have tried to just get her use to me around her cage let along putting my hand in there but she is just freaking out the whole time. I don't want to give up on her but I can't personally deal with this as I feel that so stressed over the matter and my other birds and dogs are getting ignored while I try and get her to settle. I rang the shelter and asked if they could give me any more info about her. She was not in the main family room or anything but in a back room and they just feed her once a week so I don't think she has a concept of humans full stop! Even changing her seed and water dishes becomes a night mare. The shelter will not take her back, yes I asked in case it gets to that point. I am really thinking she is going to be better to be put in a large avairy. I just don't know what to do, please any help would be great.
  25. Thanks for that will try both of those. My big issues is that she does not even like me being near the cage. I sit her cage next to my computer so that she gets use to me being around and last night she freaked out so much and threw herself around the cage so much that she broke of a wing feather. I then had to stress her out even more to get her out of the cage and try and fix it. I am getting disheartened (sp?) because my other birds as losing out time wise cause I seem to be spending so much time just getting her to settle down. Even changing her feed and water bowls have become a nightmare. I was up half the night worrying about it.
