G'day From 40degrees South
I was wrong! Cosmo has his iris rings! Grr! How stupid am I? I am sure he will still tame well, but geepers! He must be way old! I feel 1/2 cheated, but I still think he is lovely and cute! Oh dear...

G'day From 40degrees South
:angel1: Thanks Elly! You give such wonderful help! Cosmo's white patch goes from his cere to where you see it in that first picture.. Is millet the grain that is in budgie feed? It looks like it, but I am not too sure..? I'll just go ask and get some from the pet store to be sure! I had Cosmo sitting on a branch, resting on my shoulder, and holding a dish of budgie feed (millet?) up to him.. He ate some, so maybe he felt comfortable enough to eat? He has been on our shoulders a couple of times - but only briefly! I read that it is a good idea to put some millet in your hand and coax him to get on and eat..? :feedbirds: Yoda is perfectly tame - always eager to get out and play with you (he basically begs to get out and play!). He also gets back in on his own accord when tired! haha! I am not sure how he would go with Cosmo - he has not seen another budgie since joining our family (apart from the odd mirror treat!). I am very curious to see what happens if they do end up near eachother! Anyhoo, I better go and spend some bonding time with Cosimodo! Thanks so much Elly! You are great!

To Clip Or Not To Clip
okay, cool! I used to clip our first budgies' wings without worry, but now I am so sooky and worry my head off that I will clip too far! So avian vet - here I come! (The surgery where I had Cosmo booked into, giggled at his name! : haha!)

G'day From 40degrees South
Thanks Elly! Haha! Cosmo does look like Merlin! He also looks like (I can't remember their names!!) a couple of other members' babies too! :angel1: This sounds dumb, but what type of budgie would Cosmo be? I figure that Cosmo is still a 'baby' - his eyes are still all black. (Got this tip from a site.. not sure if true!?!?). He is still a little edgy when other birds come by. We live in the inner city of Hobart. Our little place has a balcony upstairs where a grapevine covers the lower pagola and surrounds the balcony - perfect feeding and playing ground for Silvereye and Black Bird birds, plus others. He looks as though he wants to jump out and play with them, but sometimes flutters so much that I move him away from the window or cover the window facing side with his cover. I really should trim him wings.. Hopefully I don't freak out again and not take him!

Poor Baby Poor Babies Poor Things
??? I can't get a good picture of them! This picture just freaks me out (scaly face, from mites, apparently!): This looked like a cute coat to help stop a bird from over-plucking itself: European red mite: http://images.google.com.au/url?q=http://w...KPCfJu8-QVAVEI= http://tfpg.cas.psu.edu/images/EuroRedMite.gif Another 2 red mites: (Not sure if this is the right type, but..) http://biology.clc.uc.edu/graphics/taxonom...carcass%201.JPG Southern red mite: http://woodypest.ifas.ufl.edu/images/southmit.jpg from: http://woodypest.ifas.ufl.edu/203.htm http://woodypest.ifas.ufl.edu/mites.htm They all look nasty! I hope your little ones are okay Hommer!! (They are cuties too! )

G'day From 40degrees South
Well, here are a few more pics.. Yoda: COSMO: Cosmo now has a rectangular white cage.. I think he likes it much more in there! I am not too sure if he is fond of the little feeders, but he still uses them! He loved his honey/ millet seed treat much much more! Cosmo loves lettuce and carrot! (Lettuce more so!). I am still trying to tame him - but am finding it hard to find the time to do it.. 15 minutes is all he is really getting.. I have missed a couple of days.. :yelling: I hope I am not being a bad budgie owner! I am trying to convince my Mum and Dad to let me bring Yoda home to my (our) place to help influence Cosmo into being a more friendly and tame boy. It is a 15 minute drive away, and my other (and younger) siblings are concerned about Yoda being too old to travel (he will be 9 years old on Mother's Day). Personally, I think that Yoda would fare better if he came here, rather than Cosmo going to their house (new surroundings, still not even sure of hopping onto my fingers..). Cosmo finished the seed treat in a week! Best not leave it in his cage - especially at such a young age! Too much honey!!??? And blegh! I have to get to know how to use my camera phone better! Yikes! Fuzzy!

To Clip Or Not To Clip
I freaked out, and decided not to get Cosmo clipped just yet. But I still think he needs his little wings clipped to help him settle in/ tame.

Carrots And Greens
Yay for vegies! Cosmo went nuts in his cage when he heard the video! (I think he misses the other budgies.. :oliveb: ). Cute video!

To Clip Or Not To Clip
Interesting thread. And a valuable one at that! I have been tossing and turning in thought about whether to have my little boy's wings clipped or not, even before finding him.. My decision is to have them clipped at the vet's - whilst getting a general check-up, claws and beak trimmed (if needed)and picking up additional budgie minerals and advice. This will have to happen after Easter though.. When I was a little, we had a budgie that the petstore owner only clipped one wing - this caused our budgie (Cheeky) to fly in circles andhe couldn't get anywhere unless he ran onthe ground or we carried him. Thankfully we had no other pets at the time! It helped him bond with us, but I hated seeing him try to fly and get nowhere. So I agree with what Elly said - clip both!!

G'day From 40degrees South
Thanks Elly! It was a bit of a dozey night.. Everyone was tired after work and all! Oops! I must have had 4 cocktails (one was TERRIBLE! - It was a 'Pear Cinnamontini' - blegh! : ), a few vodka, lemon lime and bitters and a sip of beer or two.. So no hangover, just a sleep in! Cosmo was/ is fiiiine! He wanted to sleep in too! He 'chats' with me occasionally now (especially after a good feed/ pig-out), and seems way more settled! Cosmo still freaks out (goes hyperactive) when he sees/ hears other birds in the garden. He paces at hyper-speed back and forth on his top perch. He also hated me changing his cage liner (very fluttery)! But settled quickly after it. I don't know if he likes my dark wooden bracelet.. My partner is convinced that Cosmo is mimicking the sound of the keyboard and mousewheel on here! haha! Oh gees! He looks at us when we say his name, but I am not sure if it just because we interrupt his contemplative time. Otherwise, he is okay. I should get him out for a little while! (Haven't done so yet today! ). He is nattering on as I type... Ciao, a presto/ Mata ne, MegumiA

What Time Do You Take Your Budgie To Bed?
I have been putting Cosmo to bed by 8pm (absolute max), and uncovering him at about 8.30am. He sort of puts himself to sleep, and sometimes seems that he doesn't want to be woken up! haha!

G'day From 40degrees South
Ahh, thanks Elly! :ausb: Yeah - I thought it was weird when someone told me not to have the radio on! It was always noisy at home when we were kids, and our budgies seemed to love it! I have the stereo on right now - Cosmo is chirrupping away.. Its nice! We have to go out tonight - so this will be his first night alone in our home! I hope I am not too hungover tomorrow! haha! I am loving Cosmo more every day (as expected)! Cosmo will let me put my finger to his chest and cheeks, but will flutter away when I try to put my finger so that he will hop on.... Mind you, he is very interested in anything that I am doing - brushing my hair, writing, playing with my mobile (cell) phone.. He gets exctied!! I am sure that he will trust us more.. Just takes some time! He's a cutie! Oh, and HAPPY EASTER all! :angel1:

G'day From 40degrees South
Haha! ... Yes... Mummies always get to do the fun jobs! haha! (oh dear!) And yoiks! I cleaned that poop off his eucalyptus perch after I uploaded the picture below! Poor thing! Yep - new pics will definitely be coming!! I'll have to get one that I can move up and down my slightly narrow internal staircase.. But shouldn't be too much of a problem! http://a756.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/image...78235dee153.jpg Here's Piglet again! .. I mean, Cosmo! He has been really quiet again today... Apart from when I have been on the phone! He has the knack of knowing when not to be quiet! Its cool though - the people on the other end sort of stop and giggle.. See - budgies are fun! ***Picture has been changed to a link as it is larger than our 450 by 450 requirement ***

G'day From 40degrees South
Thank you all! Gosh this forum is so fantastically awesome! Great people and great information! Perfect! Woahhhh! Neat - your new baby looks almost EXACTLY like my new little guy! He's cute! :fear And yes Bea , I totally agree now - I am going to get him a larger, more functional (rectangular) cage asap! I wanted to try out a round cage - but now I am not too fussed on it at all! Plus I really think he needs more room! It's so cute though - my partner is acting like a Daddy! He wants to spoil him more than I do! Its all good! I guess I can keep updating Cosmo's pics etc on here? This forum rocks!

Chucky And Coke Do Not Mix!
Yikes, I guess I have never stopped to think about budgies' inquistivie nature and openglasses or containers of water/ drinks! I guess my parents would never allow Yoda (family budgie) out and about during meal times... However, when Mum and Dad went out, we would let Yoda out for the whole time the parents were away! He loved it! Mind you, one afternoon he did land in a bowl of custard.. That was tricky and sticky! He tries eating and drinking everything that we do - so we have to keep him in his cage when eating.. gosh! haha! But thank you for this thread! :book:

Tame New A New Budgie From Pet Shop
Great thread! I have been sitting with our Cosmo in a budgie-safed room a couple of times a day (each for about 15-30minutes - one in morning, one in afternoon before dinner) and letting him jump out for a wander when he pleases. Slowly putting my hand in for him to step onto is not working too well, so I have found that encouraging him out with 'toys' works best with him. >> I pretend that I am really interested in the colourful toy, and act as though he can't have it (I act like a greedy little child.. ). He gets all excited - bobbing/ swinging his cute little head (and almost whole body!) around until he flys out and lands nearby (not close though - he is still wary). I eased off acting the greedy child, and 'played' with the toy - and much to my amazement, he came over and pecked, looked at and played with the toy! :excl: I felt so relieved! I thought I was scaring him at first!
