  1. Birds molt more then once, and at different ages, I agree with MB about clipping the wings, I baby sat birds this past weeks, and they are tamed and clipped every now and then one would fly and clip a wall ( this is them learning their boundaries too ) RE:Molting the bird loses too many feathers at the same time. The bird's ability to fly then temporarily is reduced. Older birds who are experienced in flying can adjust skilfully. Young birds who undergo their first moult are usually less trained than their older fellows. Therefore crashes can happen.
  2. I am not a cat person, however these photo's ( cats) may just have converted me
  3. Has your camera got a macro setting ( looks like a flower ) This is a setting for close ups???

  6. Neat replied to Pearce's topic in Aviaries
YES YES YES ... Open top avairies are more prone to getting nasties then a sealed top avairy ....... wild Birds poop, or land and scratch leaving their yuckies behind, including MITES !!!!!!! Is you avairy floor soil????? Lawn clippings mowed are a big no no for any animal !!! Just pull fresh grass out from the ground give it a rise and feed them that ..... Quarantine is a BIG Rule for keepiong birds, there is a fine line between having birds and Keeping birds ........ All branches, Gum leaves and etc should be rised prior to putting in the avairy ... I too have mad silly choices which has cost the lives of my animals, But we are all learning and that is what we are all here for to help one another........ I would use a see through colourbound or perspex for the roof, if your sides of the avairy do not let alot of sunlight in .... I have inclosed my roofs but my side gets ample sunlight, don't forget too that it is winter so the sun direction has changed Sorry to hear of your losses, but look forward to hearing more about your feathered friends,
  7. I didn't get thru much of it either
  8. Maes, check your lease agreement !!!!! If you asked for the Birds and told them about it , it should be written on the lease agreement!!! This is a legal binding contaract!, Also check where the landlord or real estate did the inspection to see if it states on there phone line, If then you will have to wait till the Landloard gets back, apart from that for a phone, use a prepaid mobile phone you can get a prepaid cap which is roughly $40 credit ( but you get bonus credits for up to $150.. I've just upgraded to wirelsee broadband with telstra, it is so far so good no problems there, security ways we all should have a anti virus program on our p.c I wish you luck mate !!!! - If worse comes to worse tell them that you are paying for a phone line to be installed has you have health issues and need it for emergancies
  9. That's beacuse the Cats would eat the Show budgies ... Well, What, someone else would have said it hahahaha
  10. I'm not bad with genetics (in general), I just don't know much about budgie genes! But most sex-linked genes are recessive as sex-linked dominant genes seem to be much rarer. It also gets confusing (for me) because I'm more familiar with mammal genetics in which case the sex chromosomes are "swapped" round. I think of "splits" as carriers (the common biological term), meaning they carry the gene but do not show it. So anything that is showing the dominant gene can be carrying (or split for) the recessive gene* but something that is showing the recessive gene cannot have the dominant gene. So when you're talking about splits, you're generally talking about the recessive gene (or the more recessive gene) being "carried" by the budgie even though it is showing the dominant trait. Of course, then you have co-dominant genes and co-recessive genes as well just to confuse things...and there are all the different things budgies can have like spangle, opaline, shade, colour etc. And when you try and do it all at once it can be confusing but if you're "new" to budgie genetics (like me) then it might be easier to focus on one gene at a time. * except for hens when sex-linked genes are involved I studied and tried and tried until i got sooo confused that I had a brain melt down ( so yeah now i have no brain lol ) the worse is the xx and xy are different to mammals then birds .... But i will give your advice a go and work on one gene at a time the sexlink ones are the worst for me esp the TCB and Fallows as some are sexlinked and some aren't English Fallow and German Fallow and then the Clearbody and Easley clearbody (sp) tsk tsk too many hahahah, Bit that is what BBC is for MB - Can't wait to see, I've been waiting since you posted her ages ago ... * hurry up and molt already
  11. Wow, Ian sound like a honest bloke .... I am tired of seeing birds either at he markets, breeders or pet stores that have scaley face that bad that it is covered in in 1 look and youcan tell the worst is that they are in with Healtheir ( looking) birds GRRRR *makes me wanna grab them by their ears drag them to the cage and say " LOOK it's not hard to treat, you lazy such and such" ...... Yes i can be rather fiesty heheheh
  12. Neat replied to maesie's topic in Cage Discussion
Well I will say 2.5 then Maes depends if they are going to have flight time outside the cage or if hey are only Caged ... 3 if with Flight time 2 with none
  13. I've been researching which, silk flowers will tolerate my eather coonditions here, but frankly, they don't like to be left in the sun, they loose their colouring ...lol....
  14. I agree and disagree ..... Yes people wil pay $$$$ to import a new specie to Australia... But think in the long run, like most once were pet owners get bored and dump their pets and then they are lef to fend for them selves in the wild, I don' fancy a cat that can jump 2m being feral around here ...... Come to think of it why would anyone want a cat that can jump 2 m anyway ?????? Gonna need a lot of butter if they are bigger too lol .... ( FIY butter on paws ofa cat is meant to help them remember their way home) I am gonna assume that this is just all talk for the moment, imagine the quarratine at the airports as it is they are in a bit of hot water because of the EI breakout with the horses so .... Yeah that is my say
