Breeding Pairs 2009
Well, today I rung my first 2010 birds, and they are all sons and daughters of the recently departed Dumber (RIP). 2 are in Earl and Latte's nestbox, the two eldest, and 4 are in with DF widow. I am going to move one tomorrow so it is 3 and 3. I cannot believe that when Dumber bred with Cino he had 2 young, only 1 which survived, but when he bred with this young DF, he had 5 offsrping, with potentially 2 more to hatch. Amazing. Such a shame he is gone, but nice to know that his genes will be passed on. One of the exciting things is that since his mate is a DF, I do not really know what she is masking. She might be grey, mauve, cobalt or sky, opaline or cinnamon, I really will not know, and may not know the cinnamon bit for another generation. All the young look well, and well fed. The DF appears to be a great mother. Plenty of millet in her nestbox assists her as well.

Colony Vs Caged
jlee, You write your thread as one of fear and trepidation. No one is attacking others personally, just pointing out the problems that exist with colony breeding. I would like to think that we respect the opinions of others on here, and I know that when we are all starting out, financially, colony breeding is often the way we go. When we advise against colony breeding, we do so as we have seen the results. Do we wish it was another way? Of course. I am not sure that the quiet members are quiet because they are colony breeders who are afraid of getting "attacked", rather I think that people have busy lives, and often people read a thread to learn more, and do not feel the need to comment.

Well done Renee. Your extention to your aviary looks fantastic.

Breeding Pairs 2009
Dumb has been returned to the aviary, along with the DF Yellow boy who's mate died - she was eggbound. It looks like a little time since he has been somewhere he can fly, so he has to build up his wing muscles again. All young are going well.

Breeding Pairs 2009
Been there, done that. She is a busy little bee who throws all the nest material out as soon as it comes in, no matter how many eggs are there.

Albino Bred With A Skyblue Greywing Dilute
Kaz knows a lot more about the greywng genes than I do, but as I understood, a bird is either greywing or dilute. There are different types of greywing, and yours may one of the varieties in which the greywing gene dilutes the body colour, however I thought that greywing was dominant over dilute - I might be thinking of clearwing here so I might need to be corrected.

Breeding Pairs 2009
I think that this chick lays eggs from a height - dropping them and damaging them. She must jump in the final stages when she lays them.

Lutino Bred To A White Dark Eyed Clear
Once more, genders are important here
-
Albino Bred With A Skyblue Greywing Dilute
Since the albino gene is sex-linked, you need to tell us genders as well

Breeding Pairs 2009
They get calcivet in their water all the time when in breeding cages. The hen was one I bought off Budgie1981. She might have been on a nest and had her eggs thrown out when she was bought. She may not have wanted to lay more eggs, but her body was working against her. She had moved home so this was stressful. I left her with her current partner to try to make the move less traumatic, and I did give her a nestbox after a week, so she had someone to lay an egg if she wanted to, but it seems that something went wrong during the day whilst I was at work. She was fine in the morning before I left.

New Born Chicks Die Before Nightfall
This is a strange one, gut wrenching. I have never had such a young chick die. Must be tough

Breeding Pairs 2009
I will get some new tomorrow. Tonight I had to move 3 out of 4 of the babies from Twitch and Kiwi's cage to a seperate cage - they can go in the kindy cage tomorrow but it was dark, so I did not want to do it tonight. Twitch was getting a little annoyed with his kids in there, with Kiwi having layed 2 or 3 eggs in her second clutch. Why not move all 4? Kiwi seems very content having the cinnamon pied in the nestbox with her. Everytime I took her out, she got back in, and Kiwi seems to like having her there. I will keep my eye on her. The fiesty one has chilled a bit as well. Earl and Latte have 2 little jelly beans now, and judging by hatching time, they are fostered eggs. The timing is all off in this nest, as 3 eggs were fostered in, and Latte has layed 5 others of her own. Not all will be fertile, but she layed an egg of hers today, which normally would not be happening with little ones hatching, unless the clutch was huge. I am sure that Omellette, Kaz's hen, has had this, as she has had clutches of 11 eggs before. DF - the DF spangle - the widow of Dumber(RIP), has 5 eggs in her nestbox, 3 of which I think are fertile. Today 1 of those eggs hatched. It will be easy to tell which eggs are the offspring of DF and Dumber(RIP) as they will all be spangles. DF spangle to SF spangle guarantees all spangles, and a 50% chance of double spangles. Earl and Latte are grey opaline normals, and the other foster parents are a green cinnamon cock and a green dom pied hen. Blue spangles would be impossible genetically. Dumb has done well. His young ones are going well, and will soon head to the Kindy cage. He does not feed them anymore, and he is looking good. This was his second round, with his first clutch all infertile. I am going to give him a rest, so he will return to the aviary.
