Hi Michelle, I am with Kathy. I would remove mum and leave dad with the babies. I did that with one of my breeder cabinets and a few days later put 2 chicks from another nest in with them as their parents wanted to start a new clutch. They have all been fine and are now all eating seed and are confident flyers. Feathers.

Hi Neat, I'm in the same boat as you... heaps of posts to catch up on. I have so many photos, I'll post a selection next week when I get a chance. I have 5 fledged budgies that are 6 1/2 weeks old that are ready to go into a kindy cage. Another couple who are 3 weeks old and 5 eggs in two nests at the moment. Like you I have had many failures, but I am sure that you will have success soon. Feathers.

Hi Michelle, I am with the rest. I wouldn't do it unless it was neccesary. Spending time with them and handling them daily will develop a good bond with them. My blue nest seems to look forward to play time, and the green girls, even though they squawk whenever I come into the room, quieten down as soon as I hold them. Feathers.

It would be great for your daughter to join in too as there is so much to learn about caring for a budgie and she might enjoy the interaction and seeing other peoples budgies too. Feathers.

Kaz, I am having the same problem with flirting budgies and many pairs I could put into breeding cabinets, if only I had more of them. Fortunately I don't have as homely looking an aviary as you, so no dropped eggies. They do like to chatter when it starts to pour, no matter what the time. Even the budgies in the birdroom in the house have a little chatter party when they hear heavy rain. It's good to know they are happy and healthy. Feathers.

Hi there. At 12 days old it should be covered in fluff and have pin feathers on the wings and tail. I have had a couple in the same situation where they failed to grow and reach normal milestones. I had 2 in a nest earlier this week where the hen had stopped feeding the chicks, even though they were begging for food. The hen was, however, feeding her other chick to bursting point. I had given the empty chicks a couple of hand feeds and when the hen still didn't take over feeding I tried fostering them to another nest. Everything was great the first couple of days, then foster hen was feeding them to overflowing, but yesterday they had near empty crops. Again the other 2 chicks in the nest were being fed to bursting point. I hand fed them again but found both dead this morning. I think the hens must know that they are not viable chicks and stop feeding them on purpose as both the actual mother and foster mother gave up on them. By all means see if the chick can be saved, but be prepared for it not to make it. This is a picture of a normal 12 day old chick. Feathers.

Hi Norm, he is a 2001 bird. One of the birds that I got from the country breeder is the same age, so right on the final edge of breeding age for a cock. I may or may not try him with a hen this year. If not he will go into retirement. Your hen may not be in breeding condition or past breeding season. One of mine that had a crusty brown cere nearly ripped off a cocks head, so I put her back in the aviary. Within a few days the cere was white/blue again. Feathers.

I knew you would like it beter that way It was such a pain in the butt to have to move the middle cage all the time to get to either side of it. Where I get just about everything else, online. I just had a look and they still have some. I love it, it makes checking their weight so easy. Being able to reset it to zero after putting a box or container on it means that the weight of the bird shows up correctly. I couldn't be bothered finding or washing enough dishes for all of them. They weren't going to let me get away with it. The budgies who were in the other half of a double breeder cage were just about trying to break in to get some, so I made some up for them. Next thing I noticed was the birds who still didn't have any were pacing back and forth and clinging on to the front of their cages as if to say "Where's mine?". So I made them some too. Lesson learnt - make enough soft food for everyone the first time! Feathers.
