  1. um, its in kelmscott, yeah I think its classed as kelmscott, they haven't had budgies there for a while but today I went and they had heaps I will post the pics I took tomorrow or monday if I can
  2. Hi feathers, I to have found myself addicted to budgies and found this site very helpful. today I went to city farmer's and they had heaps of budgies I so badly wanted to take some home, but resorted to taking pictures instead as I don't have room for more yet welcome
  3. Thanks, Nerwen she is perfectly normal and fine apart from the flying she just doesn't seem confident with it, she will fly if I put my arm in the cage she will fly a little, or if her veggies are on the floor she will flutter of the perch down to the vegies, she is about 8 1/2 months old now, so other than the flying she is fine
  4. I have a cage with 2 budgies in at the moment inside my house, and I have 2 other budgies in a much bigger cage outside I'm not planning on putting all 4 together in the inside cage but I was wondering if something happened and I needed to put them all in the inside cage would it be big enough for 4 it is 56cm wide 38cm tall 45cm deep Sorry its in cm my daughter has hidden my tape measure with inches on it, it is a big cage and the 2 in it at the moment have heaps of room, and those measurements don't include the mess tray that is under it, so the measurements are the room the budgies have it thanks
  5. Hi lovey thanks for the reply, I have tried what you suggested with no success at the moment, the problem is they aren't that interested in the millet or vegies, they are more interested in there seed, which sucks coz I would rather they liked the vegies. any other idea's?
  6. Hi MissHarley, thanks for the reply to my post. we are succeeding with the stepping up but only out of the cage, when they are inside the cage they don't want to know me, but I guess they will get used to it in time thanks
  7. Thanks Nerwen, the reason I ask is the hen that I eventually want to breed doesn't seem to fly very much she tends to climb around the cage rather than fly so I thought it would be easier for her if it was on the floor of the cage
  8. just was wondering for future reference is it okay to put the nesting box on the floor of the cage, if the cage is off the ground ??
  9. I have 2 bugies inside that I am currently trying to tame and having a little success, when out of there cage the boy will step up after realising that he can't get high without the help of my hand and the girl is making progress in that department, the question I want to ask is when they are out of there cage they are reasonably fine not that afraid of me, but when inside there cage if I put my hand in there they are afraid and try to get away whats with that?? the only thing I can think of is when I started the taming thing I was gettin them out of the cage with a face washer over my hand to avoid being bitten hard so I am asuming when I put my hand in there they are not noticing the difference BUT when out of the cage they aren't afraid of my hand like that. and if I just open the door to let them come out on there own they sit on there perch and look at the door as if to say you have to be kidding! does anyone have any idea's on how to make them less afraid of my hand in the cage... I would really really love the help please
  10. Bubbles, it doesn't really look like he can glide at all, or maybe he doesn't realise it he is so busy flapping his wings trying to fly up high that he kinda just drops. he took a leap of my bed last night aswell (which isn't very high) but he didn't land right next to it he made a little bit of distance (maybe a foot) from the bed but I think that was more because he jumped not because he glided. I don't have to worry about cats or dogs because I don't have any there are some in the neighbourhood but I don't take him out the cage outside. I guess what I am most worried about is him sitting on my shoulder while I was standing and him tryin to take off and hurting himself?
  11. The problem is for instance, last night he didn't want to get of my finger so I had to walk back to the cage with him on my finger I tried to stay as low to the ground as possible so that if he did take off he wouldn't hurt himself, he didn't try to fly away till he saw his cage, once he saw that he leaped of my finger landed on the seat part of a chair (luckily padded) but he didn't land properly and kinda rolled and ended up on the floor (carpet) he didn't hurt himself but it scares the **** out of me, its like he has no control when he tries to fly he has much less ability to fly than a clipped bird. I guess it just doesn't feel like he is getting that he can't fly. Maybe he will realise he can't fly eventually I guess time will tell. thanks lovey
  12. Hi I have a budgie that can't fly because he had pulpitis when he was little never got his flight feather's (there is a post in another section about it) the question I am asking is we have been doing some bonding sessions and we are gettin to know each other rather well, he will step up last night even climbed up to my shoulder and was playing with my hair, anyway he can't fly at all he kinda just drops he has no lift, we have been doing these sessions over pillows and blankets so he doesn't hurt himself however sometimes he still jumps of my finger and try's to fly luckily he has always landed on a pillow or blanket, but what I am worried about is when we get a little more bonded if he is sitting on my shoulder and tries to fly away and there are no pillow's or blankets he might hurt himself, does anyone think that he will one day realise he can't fly and stop trying so I don't have to remain so worried or will he probably always try??
  13. Hi All..... I have been a member here for a couple of weeks now and have posted a couple of questions already and pics of my georgeous baby's (budgies) but I just wanted to do a proper introduction of myself My name is Julia I am a 30yr old( :ausb: ) mother of 3 children and 4 budgies (yes I have a problem with my age :(Laughing out loud): ) last time I looked I was 25....... anyway I have had pets all my life when I was growing up as a kid at one stage we had 3 dogs 2 cats and 3 koi fish when I left home I got a dog of my own who was with me for 9 and half years but sadly had to be put down because she had cancer and was gettin very sick and it was the best thing for her and I haven't really had a pet since as my dog passing was hard on my children, but my kids are older now so we decided to get some budgies. the first 2 I got are stormy (male) and winter (female) they are outside in a big cage enjoying the space to fly around and play with there toys winter however prefer's to climb around the cage don't know why she can fly a bit but chooses not to, stormy however he is a show off fly's around all the time and sits and talks to himself and me when I'm sitting out there with them. the 2nd 2 I've got are dora(female named by my 4yrold (can't imagine where she got the name from hehe) and boots (male also named by my 4yrold) these 2 can't fly due to having pulpitis when they were very little they never grew in there flight feather's (there is a post in another section about it) they are inside with me boots and I have done some bonding when he is out of the cage he will step up onto my finger eventually hehe but in the cage he doesn't want to know me probably because dora doesn't want to know me yet but we will work on that.... the kids love to watch the birds and we are all loving having them around, as I have now probably told you my life story hehe I will be of as I have to get SOME work done while my kids are at school
  14. Hi, I just wanted to add a reply here, I posted a question in this forum for information and any advice that could be given as I have 4 budgies 2 of which I was concidering breeding at a later stage, but I posted the question because I was CONCIDERING it, I want to do all the right research first and then make the final decision, Phoebe I think what you have had to say on this subject is absolutely right! I know someone and I wont name names they are not part of this forum anyway but they have 2 budgies a male and female and they are in a small indoor cage together, the cage is very rarely cleaned and the female is constantly laying eggs none of them ever hatch obviously because of the conditions she lives in, they have a avery out the back of there house that they had a bird in and the bird was attacked by what they think was a rat it died, I suggested they fix that cage up and put the budgies in there the answer i get is "yeah" and thats it, I feel ever so sorry for these budgies but there is nothing I can do, and I know you will probably say report them or just take the budgies well there is good reason why I can't which I would rather not say. these people absolutley see these budgies as goldfish. Again at the moment I am only looking into breeding my budgies and not all of them just 2, I haven't had my budgies long but love them heaps already, I love to sit and watch them play and get to know there personality's one of which I have started to bond with which is great fun for us both. well I'll stop now because I think I'm just waffling hehe, hope I haven't alienated anyone just wanted to say something on the subject :ausb:
  15. Thanks for your fast reply's, as bubbles said I have atleast 6 months before my budgies are ready for breeding at the moment I am really interested in doing the research on the subject, I will make the final decision as to if I will breed or not when I have done all the research, I don't want to be flying into it blind, thats why I posted the question, and I figure 6 months or more will give me plenty of time to find out alot ALOT of information. pointing me in the right direction would be helpful thanks
  16. Thanks shellball, I would really appreciated any information anyone could give me
  17. Hi, well I have 2 budgies that I am eventually hoping to breed, at the moment they are only 6 months old (to young for breeding) so I thought I would start now by asking if anyone can give me any information on breeding what to expect all that sort of stuff, or point me in the right direction to find out as much information as I can on breeding, I would like to do all the right research and stuff before the time comes? thanks
  18. cool thanks all for your help, really needed to know if it was okay to give it everyday coz they do absolutely love it they also eat it down to just the cob and end up having yellow feather's around there beaks, its actually kinda cute thanks for the reply's
  19. This is probably a really silly question, but I just wanted to check, is corn on the cob good for budgies, the reason I ask is my budgies love it more than they love there millet, and as I know millet is budgie junk food I was just wondering is it bad to give them to much corn on the cob,?
  20. hi, I have 2 flightless budgies, not because they were clipped but because they don't have there flight feather's threw having pulpitis when they were babies. I took them to the vet yesterday he said everything was fine......... anyway (getting to the point) I have read alot of the forum's and you all seem to have such tame and friendly birds, I would like to have this type of relationship with my 2 little friends but I kinda don't really know how to go about it I have had advice from other's but figure I could use all the help I can get how did some of you tame your birds? tips and advice would be great thanks
  21. thanks eterri much appreciated budgies were given clean bill of health by the vet he said they looked fine and that they may grow there flight feather's back when they molt and they may not to hard to tell thanks again everyone for concern and help
  22. hi all thanks for your concern. it was driving me nuts and had me very concerned so I rang the lady back this morning.... she probably thinks I'm a loony hehe.... anyway lovey you were right they had pulpitis she took them to the vet and the vet gave her a wash for them and a few other's, she said she had a batch of babies on the floor of her avary and had a mouse invasion at the time so they all got it, she said a couple died, she had a few other's that had it was given the wash by the vets and they were all treated the other's grew back there feathers theses to didn't thats why she couldn't put them back in the baby avary because they can't get around coz they can't fly. so I am a little less concerned now but just to be sure I am taking them to vet tomorrow eterri that cage is the cage the lady gave me that they were living in, at her place, as she couldn't keep them in her avary as they couldn't get around, I just wanted to leave them in that one for a day to get used to the environment, but yesterday they were moved to a much better cage with lots of toys and they seem rather happy. chirping away and trying to talk to my other 2 that are outside. more taming tips would be muchly appreciated for when they have been given a clean bill of health
  23. okay here are the best picture's that I could take of them, hopefully you can see what I mean by there feather's. I rang the lady today she said that they were checked and treated by a vet along with a few other's, I'm sure she said they were diagnosed with the polyomavirus that you mentioned eterri but I can't really remember what she said (should have wrote it down) it was something like that. she said all the other's came good and grew there feather's these 2 didn't, she said they weren't contagious and has had them with other birds and everything was fine, but I am going to take them to the vet in a few days just to be sure. they are very cute. and again thanks heaps for all your reply's and advice its very much appreciated the grey/white one on the left is dora and the blue on the right is boots
  24. thanks all for your prompt reply's, the lady that I got them of said that they got the infection due to mice in her avary, and that they had been checked by a vet but I will ring her again today to make sure, also I am quarantining them, these 2 are inside and the other 2 are outside. the taming method I was talking about lovey was the one where they are clipped and as the site says when they flutter to the ground pick them up, the problem I would have with that one is these two can't fly at all, they jump of there perch's, I'm pretty sure (haven't tried yet) that these 2 would just fall like rocks. is it okay to catch them? or does that upsett them to much? would love to know if its possible to tame the 2 at the same time. I will take some pictures later and post them hopefully tonight oh and they are 3 months old
  25. Hi All, well I need some help if anyone can give it, I have 2 budgies already, but I was looking through the paper on the weekend and found an ad for 2 disabled babies, so I rang and well now I have them as they were just to adorable to not get, they are disabled because they don't have any flight feather's aparently they got a bacterial infection when they were really little and never grew there flight feather's. the lady said they may grow them after there first malt (<---can't spell) hehe anyway hence they can't fly. I am hoping to tame these 2 but any advice that could be given would be GREAT! firstly I don't know where to start. they let me put my hand in there cage but if I get even close they run. also these 2 are great friends they are always by each other's side, is it possible to tame them both at the same time?? I have looked at budgietalk.com but i don't know if that method would work as they can't fly. would really appreciate any tips anyone could give me. my 4yr old daughter has named them the girl is dora and the boy is boots, which I thought was kinda cute so it has stuck
