3rd And Final Pair
Yeah, you should be able to see some colour on the pin feathers on the wings. It is possible to have both yellow and white faces, my yf cock and olive pied hen had one white face in their last clutch and a yf pied

Why Do We Breed?
For me, I breed to get a certain result - my last few clutches I wanted a good spangle cock, which I achieved with my last clutch - the process resulted in 14 chicks over three clutches with 6 of them being spangle and only one of those male , It also resulted in a lacewing female(which was unexpected but appreciated!) a pied creamino female, a good normal female (which I will keep and use later) a few dilutes and various other colour combinations, some of which I have passed on to family members (couldnt bare to sell them!) Mum is now having a well deserved rest. Another clutch last year, with a clearbody hen, all I wanted was cock birds - and out of the two resulting chicks I got 2 really nice ones! I will pair them up for next spring, and see what I get with those! I also do it for fun, its a hobby. I love when the chicks are starting to get their feathers in and seeing the resulting colours!

How Selective Are You When Rehoming Your Budgies?
I don't think even a list of do's and donts would assist this person, and I am sorry if that sounds judgemental but she has asked for and I have offered her advice on several occasions (mostly regarding her dog, but also her budgies) and sadly it goes in one ear and out the other. At the end of the day I want my babies to go to homes where they will be treated like or better than they are now. All my animals are treated like a part of the family, even my avairy birds have a soft spot in my heart (and me in theirs going by the fact that the moment I walk in there over half of them use me as the perch!)

How Selective Are You When Rehoming Your Budgies?
I was talking to a friend of mine today about how much I love each and every one of my budgies (and other birds) and how I have four new babies atm, then an hour later her friend was asking me about buying a baby budgie off me... Now, realistically I cannot keep every baby that I breed, if I did I wouldnt achieve what I want in my breeding line, so I will have to part with a few babies every now and then - but I am very selective in where my babies go and I know that this home isnt for my babies. I wondered what other people did in this situation, and who actively selects homes for their budgies. (Its not that I have anything personally against this lady, its just I know she treats her animals as possessions not part of the family, where as everyone of my animals is as loved as my children- the deciding factor was when her 10 year old said Mum killed the last budgie by leaving it outside in its cage in the middle of winter!)

Unexpected Colour In Nest...
These are pics taken just now, I was a little surprised to see Raini outside the nest box! Isnt it amaxing how they change in just a few days!!! http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y242/barb...sh/106_9932.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y242/barb...sh/106_9934.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y242/barb...sh/106_9939.jpg Thanks everyone for helping but I'm still not clear on it- is Raini a Fallow or a Lacewing? His/her eyes are exactly the same colour or its lutino clutch mate at the moment, will that be what I have to keep an eye on to distinguish the mutation?

Unexpected Colour In Nest...
Well it is similar to that one, with its general body colour and cheek patches but the wing markings are a lot lighter...a lot! I have the day at home tomorrow so I will go out and try to take a decent photo now it is a bit older. This photo from the bonsai fallow site is very similar to Raini.... but I still will post pics tomorrow. http://www.geocities.com/fallowbudgies/fall801.jpg

Unexpected Colour In Nest...
I will post a better picture asap, because with babies almost full feathering the marks are even feinter!!! Baby has a name so I best start calling it that- Raini!!!!!! (All in this clutch are named after the weather on the day they hatched Raini, Cloudy, Sunni and Windy) Is that unusual? what do lacewing markings usually resemble???Daz that baby is beautiful, but I am confused as to how it resembles Raini (Laughing out loud) - Raini being buttercup yellow with very slight wing markings!

Unexpected Colour In Nest...
Yes, same parents as the last clutch. Dad is a skye blue (some have said seafoam) spangle and mum is pied. They are to the left in this photo. This is the baby in question at 3 weeks, the brow/grey colour was barely noticable(in fact I thought it was just nestbox grime ) although on closer examination of this photo it is just noticable... it is still very very feint but baby is gorgeous! http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y242/barb...sh/106_9919.jpg

Unexpected Colour In Nest...
So can I assume by the number of veiws of this topic, and the number of replies that Nerwen is correct and I have a lacewing baby?
-
Unexpected Colour In Nest...
Thanks Nerwen! yeah, it still has the red eyes, the brown gray colour is so feint atm that if I put him/her in the sun the colour all but disappears/blends into the buttercup yellow.

Unexpected Colour In Nest...
Okay, some of you may remember back in May my hen Patches laid a clutch of eggs and one of the babies was a lutino. She has since lain another clutch and we have four new babies, a df pied, a normal, a lutino and one that has me stumped. When this baby hatched it had red eyes, and I immediately thought lutino, now at four weeks of age it has feint brownish-grey markings on its wings, and a few marks on its head/face. Whatever its mutation this baby is absolutely gorgeous, I havent really seen one similar in colour but I havent seen many different mutations either! I can post pics but I imagine the colour will be better in a few days when its feathers have grown in a bit more. Ideas anyone????

One Of My Babies Has Red Eyes....?
Trying to remember what the parentage of the spangle is, I remember the breeder saying that one parent was pied, but forget what the other was... have to check my records. The parentage of the pied hen is unknown, and she is a dominant pied. Still wondering what colour the red eyed baby could possibly be though, I found when I was weighing them that its eyes are starting to open and they are definately red. Cant wait for it to feather up!!!!!

One Of My Babies Has Red Eyes....?
Patches eggs have all hatched, four surviving babies in total ranging from 9 days old to 3 days old. The first, second, third and fifth hatchlings all have dark eyes but the fourth hatchling, now 4 days old, has visibly red eyes! Although they havent started to open as yet, you can see the colour under the skin and its totally different to babies siblings! Mum is a green/yellow pied and dad is a sky blue spangle.... what should I expect colour wise from this baby? Will try for photos if they are needed....

How Would You Describe This Colour?
(Laughing out loud)! That puts a whole new twist on it, I always thought dilute or cinnamon but never considered a clearbody! And Yes, I think she definately is opaline, she has the V, different head markings to normal but its hard to distinguish the body colour from the yellow on her wings. One of her eggs hatched yesterday, so I am very interested to see what it results in... although I will probably just get a green opaline, right? (Dad is a violet cobalt opaline)
-
How Would You Describe This Colour?
Thanks lovey, it will be great to see what a few people think of her colour! She would have to be one of my favourite birds, and I have her in a breeding cage with my other favourite - a violet/cobalt opaline cock- and although none of their eggs have hatched yet I am sure that one will hatch any day now (I can hear the chick inside the egg)

How Would You Describe This Colour?
Iwas finally able to upload a foto of Olive, any ideas on colour? She is the budgie in the foreground

Yes! Eggs Are Hatching!
Egg number five hatched this afternoon! I managed to take this photo moments after it hatched, and sucessfully transferred the photos onto my computer. So far all four surviving chicks look healthy and are being fed well. The eldest baby is 6 days old, his eyes are opened and he is getting pin feathers...I call him fatso and he gets cuddles every day.

Yes! Eggs Are Hatching!
Well, sadly, the first baby was tossed from the nest box by Mum (Patches) its first night. The second baby hatched Mondaynight, and is a fat litttle slug, now 4 1/2 days old with its eyes beginning to open. Baby number three hatched on Wednesday night, going well so far, I actually think its fatter at this stage than number 2. The fourth egg was due to hatch yesterday, chick is alive in shell and not far off hatching, it has chipped the shell and we heard it chirping inside the egg. Baby number 5 is due to hatch tomorrow, and I think that will be all of them!!!! Two eggs are clear, and one was tossed from the nest the day it was laid, so I dont think Patches did too badly! Its a task to keep them all warm at night, but so far so good! They are still in the avairy and I pop a hot water bottle upright behind the nestbox, one beside it and a flannelette baby sheet over the lot, and then around 9 at night I pop a babies quilt (folded in half and then folded again) over the lot, its beautiful and warm in the nest then! Our temps have fallen to minus 5 celcius some nights, and as the weeks go on I can see me having to replace the water in the hw bottles more often, perhaps every 3-4 hours. Olives eggs have yet to hatch, and I have doubts that they actually will, because her nest box was accidently knocked over after the fourth egg was laid (I wasnt told until recently ) Working on the photos! I have had trouble with my camera connection, and I cant transfer from the camera to the computer at the moment, so I am hoping to get them on disk shortly!

Yes! Eggs Are Hatching!
I am sooooo excited! Just got home after a loooong day, went out to feed the aviary birds and check nest boxes, and I found our very first (ever) hatchling!!! Yay!!!!! It is so cute and pink and new, with a full crop, and a cute little fuzzy butt(I thought they were completely neked when they first hatch!) Mum and Dad budgie, Patches and Rusty, seem to have an idea of what they are doing, as they both have full crops and so does baby. Praying for mild weather for the next week or so, so bubs has more of a chance against the elements..... Now, waiting to see what happens with the other 12 eggs, between Patches and Olive!

Cage Finally On Its Way Here!
Wow! Thats a good size for a mobile cage, I'm sure your birds will be very happy in there. I want one just like that! I could put all my babies in there(heres me counting my chickens before they hatch hehehe!) Its a pity they dont ship to Australia though

Egg Question.....
rewinding my brain back a year.... dont they change color the closer they get to hatching? I hope so! They are due to start hatching the day after tomorrow, so anytime really! I hope they were kept nice and warm last night though.... it got down to -3 degrees celcius here last night :budgiedance: and we had a huge frost on the ground this morning, but the nest box was really warm when I checked on them at 7am, so heres hoping!
