I paired off an extremely frightened, untameable budgie with my tame budgie. (the scared one was an abuse victim) My tame budgie has never gone any less tame, because I kept up the interaction with him I believe. The scared one? No longer scared, but still untame. So long as she is content, Im happy with that. Am also in agreement of what Eterri said. Back to say, if the budgie is tame and hand-reared, it will most likely be the human companion she is pining for at the moment! Hand reared birds can get 'human imprinted' rather than parent imprinted. A feathered friend would be lovely for your bird, by my guess is right now that bird is desperate for human companionship.
  2. Am sorry about the loss of your budgie. Have you any idea HOW she could have sustained such a serious injury?
  3. cuttlefish is NOT enriched enough in calcium to keep a frequent layers calcium levels up. A very good source of calcium is ZolcalD, available from your vet.
  4. Your budgie will only take a small amount of water. Often budgies can be shy of drinking when there are people around, but no budgie willlet itself dehydrate if water is available, so donr worry. I hardly ever see mine drinking nether!
  5. Topic is pinned, people DO need to read this. Thankyou for having the courage to share this Karen. Anne
  6. Why not an emergency call out?

I strongly believe that a full check up (by a vet) and full quarantine is vita. Take it from someone who has just found one of her birds to be PBFD positive. Thank God I am strict with quarantine. However, PBFD is an airborn disease, and still, the rest of my flock could be affected, they COULD die as a result of this disease being present in the house. I have rehomed little Beefur in a very trusted home, where he will be the only bird. I have given the rest of my flock a little bit more chance by doing this. okay, so I quarantined, had full checks, and I still have Beak and feather disease in my house. BUT without the full check-up, Beefur wiuld have come out of quarantine and mixed with my flock, who would all have been in even more risk than they are now. A full check up is vital. If you can't afford it, dont get another bird UNTIL you have saved up for full check-up.
  8. That bird needs to be seen by an avian vet immediately. She could be in agony, she probably is.

Has the bird been to the vet prior to this post? Amwondering where the ''acute bowel inflamation'' diagnosis came from? Your pet deffinately needs medical attention though.

It could be that your budgies are lacking in a nutrient or vitamin or something. If theyve only recently started doing this, I would ask your vet for a good suppliment, like ACEhigh, and sprinkle a bit on there food each morning.

Julie, contact Gary at birdline UK, he gets the little guys in his rescue. If Im not mistaken, they hace resident budgies even now! You DO have to be a member to adopt, but they are a great rescue, I think the yearly subscription is ten pounds, soon to be fifteen, but genuine members are hard to find, you would be joyfully received! (Many people join to get a cheap/free bird like a grey, a cockatoo, a macaw etc. Birdline needs all the genuine members it can possibly get! Email me and I'll give you all his contact details xxx

Its not actually an Avian vet, but its a start. I hope your little bird is going to be okay, but Id deffinately get her checked out. Infevtion is always a possibility.

Well, if you have a quarantine cage ready, thats a great start! There's no guarantee that 2 budgies will get along as it seems you know, so you MAY have to be prepared to buy the new guy a nice spacious cage of his own if it dosent work out. Quite often two budgies that dont get on inside a cage will get on perfectly well outside of a cage. Once quarantine is over, Id do the introductions slowly, letting the little new guy stay in his quarantine cage in the same room as your current budgie. Let the current budgie have chance to fly over to the newbies cage and investigate the new bird for a day or two, and also, let the new guy take a look at the original bird in his cage. For the first week, until they are quite used to each others prescence, Id let them reside in seperate cages though. Once both are allowed to fly together in the room, let them have the option of ether returning to their own cages, or returning together to one cage. I have found that they soon seem to prefer being together than seperated, but its neccessary to give them the choice. Hope it all works out well if you do get another budgie!
  16. TUT! What utter nonesense! Is this seed more expensive than, say, Trill? Imagine the disappointed kids (and adults) who invest in this stuff, instead of investing TIME in their pet, just to find out that it is no more than a sales gimmick. I hate rip-off merchants!

With my budgie 'Teapot' I just looked at him and thought ''Im going to call him Teapot!'' I have NO idea why other than it just seemed so cute and different and it suited him, (Laughing out loud)! Snowy was a rescue, already named. Queenie (galah cockatoo) another rescue, already named. Albert, the desperately sick little budgie I took in had no name, he was almost dead, and had seemingly nothing going for him, the least I could do was give him the dignity of a name. So I chose what I felt was a very dignified name, ALBERT. Pippa and Penny the two cockatiels I rescued recently were already named. Beefur, my latest rescue, well, I couldnt find a name that suited him, so I thought until i find the perfect name, i shall call you BFor as in B for budgie. Then I realised I HAD fund the perfect name for him, BEEFUR! :(Laughing out loud):

it has been SUGGESTED????? You mean that bird HASNT been rushed to the vet already??? I make No appologies if my response seems harsh, that bird should have been under veterinary crae before you had time to type this post! Is cost a problem??? I dont care!!!!! has she fot a tv/music centre/video/dvd palyer??? Tell her to SELL them if needs be to protect and care for her bird! My anger at this is because I SEE the results of 'cant afford vet care, its not needed, its just a bird' day in and day out. If your friend is in UK, I would pay for transport of said bird to me, and from then on, pay all vets fees in order to give this poor, poor innocent bird the care that it is ENTITLED to. Does your friend know that a birds beak is approximately 15 times more sensitive to pain than the human eyeball? I am furious and distressed that this bird isnt already under deep and intensive veterinary treatment. However, if your friend woul like genuine like help and guidance tell her/him to email me at chirpy001@hotmail.com Im not happy with what I have read, but hey, none of us are perfect. I will try and help if I can. Im angry that this has even come to post at this stage, BUT Im glad it has. The bird needs help, the friend needs guidance. Dont disappear please, we need to know whats going on. We want to help. Anne

I had 3 budgies in one cage, they got along just fine! It may be a bit intimidating to your present budgie if you introduce 2 new budgies to her at once though..So, what I would do after quarantining the newbies, is to introduce her to one of them first, for maybe a few days, then introduce the next budgie. Be sure to have at least one water bowl for each budgie, and at least one seed cup for each budgie. In the wild, the fly around in flocks of 100's, so with careful introduction there shouldn't be much trouble. Just watch cosely for any signs of bullying.
  21. chirpy replied to a post in a topic in Food And Nutrition
I always have iodine/mineral/cuttlefish blocks in my birds cages. I dont really believe they get the true nutrients etc in captivity that they can in the wild. Having the blocks there for them means that if they feel they are lacking in something, they can nibble at the block to replenish it.

As far as I know Hath, the cage protectors work by giving off fumes which can damage a birds respiratory and immune systems. Apparently the toxins in the fumes that are used to kill off the lice and mites are often highly poisonous to the bird who's cage is meant to be getting protected. Almost like using a fly spray near a bird. Anne

Hi Dutchman, and thankyou for the warning. Is parrot Disease known by any other name? Id like to read up on it. Thanks, Anne EDIT Is this the disease you are reffering to? http://www.tuxford.dabsol.co.uk/masterbree...9pachecos13.htm

Another point worth considering, WHY do you want to breed? If its mainly because you want the 'joy'(?) of seeing the eggs, the hatching, the developing babies, then, in my honest oppinion, thats not reason enough. Think of the long term affects, the 'unwanted novelties' the sweet babies who grow up knowing nothing but bars, and an enclosed space, because the 'so full of promises and devotion' carers that yur babies are sold/given to, just cant be bothered with their tiny, dependant feathered friend. I work in the rescue side of things, so Im very biased, cos I see the results of 'too much trouble birds' every day of my life. Im not judge and jury, Im nowhere near qualified to be that, Im just VERY cautious and uneasy when people innocently want to breed, yet know not of the horrors that can lie ahead for the beautiful, innocent babies that come forth from the 'love' of the innocent, unaware breeder. Its worth a thought, is it worth it in the long run?

Good old fashioned newspaper, or plain white kitchen paper towellin, and you wont go far wrong. Despite some fears about newspaper ink, the dangerous chemicals in the original ink are killed off in the heating/printing process. Glossy magazines etc, maybe not so safe. But your basic pages from your local rag? yeah, no problem
