Hi guys

what is the dose of doxy for chlamydia infection

vet told me twice but I forgot because I was so distressed

all I have is what he wrote down: 1/4 teaspoon in 100mL.

How long should they be treated for? My birds won't drink 100mL in a week! how will they get their full 1/4 teaspoon a week?

Do I need to make it more concentrated to get the full 1/4 teaspoon? Or is the quarter teaspoon in 100mL just a concentration guide and the bird will drink what it wants

I would say that is just the recommended ratio. Whatever the birds drink in a normal week of that mixture will be enough to treat it.

Has to be made fresh daily. Cannot be made up in advance. Must not feed soft food or vegies during that time. Must remove all sources of calcium ( bells, mineral blocks ) from the cage. No other source of water.

and you really need to phone the vet and ask him again for the duration he requested.

Thanks KAZ

What do you think about the concentration though. Should I make it more concentrated so they get the full dose or does that dosing assume that they won't consume all the water. Because I know of no bird that drinks 100mL/week.

I already called the vet but the receptionist only passed on a message and it left me still confused about the concentration.

If you were told the strength to make it.........quarter teaspoon to 100ml, then that is the STRENGTH it needs to be regardless of how much they drink. And it must be made fresh each day. Try and keep it out of direct sunlight too as it goes off in sunlight.

You could try and make one eighth of a teaspoon to 50 ml though :D

Thanks Kaz

apparently pepper (budgie 5 weeks) has psitaccosis. His Sx now include: clear wet sneeze 5 days, bubbles in urine, diarreah (perhaps just urine from all the antibiotic liquid ive been feeding him)

now bubbles (budgie 4 months) has increased respiratory rate, possible slight tail bobbing.

and chicken (green cheeked conure 5 months) has a clear wet sneeze, bubbles in urine.

all have now been separated from each other but i fear its too late.

i think we will lose all 3 in the next 48 hours. i cant stop crying. i only lost my last budgie (Mo, 3 weeks) to pneumonia about a month ago. I can't handle it anymore. I don't think we will get any more birds if these ones don't make it.

I'm so upset :D

I am real sorry to hear this Alicia. Did you introduce a new bird without quarantine ? and the new bird was incubating psittacosis ?

They are all in separate cages, in different bedrooms!!!My husband thinks I'm being paranoid about bubble's tail bobbing. he doesnt think there's anything wrong with him and im just extrapolating to the other birds.

Thanks GB. All are still alive today.Pepper's runny poo has resolved. I think it was just from excess urine from all the antibiotic liquid id given her. she happily sculled 3 softdrink capfulls of antibitoci liquid when it was mixed in with a tiny bit of her old formula.she did the same this morning.now her poo has a white coating over the 'poo' part, as well as the urate component. hopefully the doxy will cover for this aswellhusband thinks bubbles' tail bobbing is in my head. quite possible im seeing things that aren't thre. she looks very happy today. thats the trouble. they all look great. not one of them looks close to sick. all eating, preening, flying well. hopefully we've got this in time :D

if the doxy is working, they will perk up and look great in a few days. if the doxy is not working (meaning psittacosis is not the cause) then they will get sicker. if they are still looking sick with yucky poop after 5 days of doxy, contact your vet again.
