Posted May 8, 200619 yr Hi All I was on another forum today, and someone asked when they sould start hand feeding their chicks. People replied back saying if you hand feed a female they will grow up to be very agressive hens. I have never heard this before and wondered if anyone has ever come across this before??? Thanks p.s. MODS, im not sure if i put this in the right place, please move if need be
May 8, 200619 yr Why would hand rearing a female be different to a male? I always thought that the result was super socialized, friendly budgies.
May 9, 200619 yr I thought it was strainge too, but 3 other people agreed that the hen will become more agressive when she becomes sexually mature??? I'd never heard this before!
May 9, 200619 yr maybe they meant having a hen in a flock that has been ahnd raised to accept humans as other birds can be more agressive to other birds when wanting to mate.
May 9, 200619 yr i hand raise chicks and i haven't seen a difference in genders, no different than any other species of parrot
May 9, 200619 yr Could they have meant that a hand raised/hand tamed hen would become agressive to humans when she was mating/raising chics? I have heard that this does happen a lot. Edited May 9, 200619 yr by missdawne
May 9, 200619 yr This is what was posted: budgies are one species of bird that does NOT do well being hand fed for both sexes. Hand feeding is to remove all fear from the bird. This okay for the cock birds, BUT hens are aggressive by nature. When these Hand fed hens hit sexual maturity turn into living witches. If one could tell the sexes when you go to pull the chicks that would be great, sadly you can not. I have had more Hand fed hens dumped on my door step because people were tired of getting attacked by them. I truly wonder how many more are tossed to the 4 winds??? May 9, 200619 yr hmmm...they did say when they reach sexual maturity...maybe this person has only had experience with hens that were agressive....and they do seem to be biased on the subject due to the number of hens "dumped" at their door...my hens are not hand raised or tamed...however my pied hen is docile even when I am in the nest box and the mauve hen tries to eat me whenever I open the lid...I think it is just a personality thing and they all have different ones...just my opinion
May 9, 200619 yr I would say it depends entirely on the bird. Even with my 'wild' aviary hens i have a couple that are evil witches and some that are the friendliest birds ever. I've also had different experiences handling hen chicks in the nest. Some are evil biting machines and others are little snuggle pies. As whoever wrote this has had lots of aggressive hens dumped at her door she probably hasn't had the opportunity to meet the friendly ones.
May 10, 200619 yr Anna, I've never heard of this before, and I've had budgies off and on for over 30 years. When budgies become sexually mature, I know the cocks can become agressive - just think of all the male budgies with mirrors to defend. Rainbow used to draw blood trying to keep me away from his friend in the mirror. Hens I've never had a problem with, especially tame ones. The 5 hens I have now that I raised from hatch have never been aggressive towards me, they will normally be the ones to seek out my attention. You can get attacked by either sex. I would think those super agressive hens were probably trying to tell someone to leave them alone and the humans just weren't getting the hint.....
May 11, 200619 yr It is never the animal's fault, always the human's. Perhaps those people don't handrear them very well, or the people that take them don't handle them well.
