We Have Mousies

Featured Replies

We have been battling some intruders in the aviaries over the past few days. Suddenly there was a mountain of sand in the aviary ( actually both aviaries ) from goodness knows where......so we figured mice had tunnelled into the aviaries. Ken got out his Special mouse bait trap ( designed so mice go in and eat the poison but birds cannot ) and we have set it up every evening in the aviary. Every morning all the poison is eaten so they are still active in there. I have been leaving a small light on in the area where we think the mice are so the birds dont freak out ( they were twittering all night one night obviously freaked out by something ). Ken has installed a better feeding system so there are no seed husks on the floor. He's a neat freak anyway and has been known to vacuum the aviary out and wash the birdie poop off the plants leaves too. Am I going to have to buy mouse bait in bulk or will there come an end to this eating all the bait and coming back the next night ? Any more ideas ?? :)

you will probably need to wait a few days as the poison usually takes a couple of days to kill them once they have eaten it. how about one of those sonic mouse repellants? not sure if they would upset your birdies though!

you don't want pet mice? :D They are so cute!!

Here is a link I found I didn't quite read it totally through it may have some more suggestions http://www.lostmymarblz.com/fl-housing-out...door%20Aviaries

Thanks Lovey. That trap they describe is the one I am using, but I think I need a few more :P Hopefull we will see the end of them very soon. The birds have a light on all night now so they don't get spooked. Apparently the cooler and wetter weather is driving them to find new homes which for right now, is our aviary. Free food....come and get it! Some of the walls are covered with brushwood and maybe they hide behind that. :)

We still have mice. They are eating all the rat poison being put down for them and coming back for more. They have even been as cheeky to go into some breeder cages and eat the paper covering the floor of the cages and the seed ! One was running around the feedroom yesterday and I donged it on the head with a broom -_- Poor mousie :( Tonight we got out the big guns. 6 mousetraps and 5 poison bait traps ( safe ones for aviaires ).............let's see what tomorrow brings. :P

-_-: what if they comes with their big guns and human poisoning :P:

Sounds like a nasty problem. I know lots of people here have rodents as pets, but they are not for me. UGH! I hope you get things under control soon.

Thanks Shawna............I just posted this in another section but it is very apt here......... My fiance IS a VIRGO and he vacuums the aviaries, the footpaths to the aviaries, washes the birdie poop off the frangipani leaves and puts floormats and doormats to every door into and out of the aviaries and bird rooms. by my standards...sometimes he goes a little overboard.

Also he ( Virgo fiance ) would never hurt a living creature if he could help it. He feels sorry for the mousies. We also have a trap that catches them so you can set them free somewhere else (goodness knows where -_- but you can if you want ). :P I told him if he catches em alive he can take them to work and set them free..........he works for Australia Post :hap: someone's letterbox may have a surprise :(

(Laughing out loud). Glad he doesn't work on my postal route -_-. What a surprise that would be.

:P:( :hap: I am laughing my darn *** off here :) You crack me up :P

Well without humor we would all go insane

Yep....anytime. :P When we went away camping he seriously wanted to take the vacuum cleaner to vacuum the floor of the tent :P: When he suggested it, after a withering look from me, my answer is unprintable :D

I went out to buy a broom during our last camping trip - I couldn't handle all the sand! :P Oh tell Ken he can bring Melon and one of the twins with him when he comes!!! :D (or both!!)

Hows the mouse hunting going? Its one thing to have a cute little "pet", but to have dirty mice & rats taking food, pooing, and spreading god knows what germs, NO THANK YOU! I have rats that live in the trees in my garden, they eat the fruit in the trees & steal any bird food they can find. YUCK!!!

I think we have defeated the mice. No more signs of them after finding about 3 dead ones. :)

:) That's good the intruders have left, I MIGHT have a mouse in the house, traps got put down yesterday (away from the birds and no poisons). There really hasn't been evidence (mouse turds like happened a couple of years ago) but something unduly upset my cockatiel and she is really smart. Hope I am wrong, they freak me right out. :(

I have 4 traps under the storage areas in the breeding room and one big rat trap outside.... All I need now is a cat trap. :bluebudgie:

:ausb: My landlord does have one of those Daz and has put it out a few times when he has seen cats slinking around my outdoor feeders and he has caught several feral cats (man do they stink!), poor things, they are immediately put down at the animal shelter. Also has caught a couple of pet kitties and thrown them back over the fence with a good talking to. And keep in mind that there are bylaws to keep your pet within the confines of your yard. Wish people would keep their cats inside, they won't kill natural wildlife (we would be miles ahead at the Wildlife Shelter, cats get the bunnies, squirrels and birds and who could blame them, it's instinct), they won't get fleas, get into fights or hit by cars. :bluebudgie:

Thanks a lot :D

Here is a description of a good mousetrap system that works from that article

I'm writing to describe a method that has taken all the work and poison out of the process and seems to catch every new visitor before he/she digs a home. I borrowed a poison bait box from a friend. The box is about 5" wide 2 1/2" high and 12" long made of wood with a Masonite lid that slides in a slot, either end has a hole in the center about 3/4" wide. The inside if the box is divided into three compartments the dividers run across the width of the box and are only 1/2 the height of the box. The center compartment is designed to hold bait. I have filled this center area full with nesting material and set a mouse trap of the type having a large yellow plastic trip lever just inside one end with the trip directly in front of the hole. It seems that mice just can't resist this little apartment and don't survive the inspection. The trip lever is visible thru the hole and I check it whenever I'm in the flight. Every couple of months during warm weather I catch a new visitor. The hole is too small for my birds to enter and no bait is required. Best of all the more mice that enter and mark the box the better it attracts mice.

Yes, I've read that, but I still can't imagine it :D

But just now I found a man who makes lots of kinds of traps :D

Thanks Kaz

I’m sorry Kaz, but from reading that description, I have no idea of what the trap looks like, as it doesn’t sound like any trap I have ever seen. If it was possible & not a problem a picture of the actual mouse trap would be great thanks.

Just the trap it's self not the whole box complex, I mean.
