Canary/finch Seed Mix

Is there anything in this type of mix that would be dangerous for budgies? It looks like it has a lot less millet in it, so I thought I could mix it with regular budgie seed to and give them a little more variety.

From what I have been told, it's healthier than some budgie mixes. Less fattening. But I paid extra the other day to get Budgie Breeder mix (like premium mix) as it had no oats in it and just two kinds of seed. Apparently a better mix according to the experts in birds :ausb:

nope, Daz had said he feed it to his bird because of the less millet.

I feed my bird Finch mix only after been told by the vet this is heathly for them with out the hulled oats which are like mars bars to our birds. My five babies where raised on this seed. One day I ran out of seed and the store was closed, since I'm looking after connie and she is on normal budgie mix I used some of that to tie over Scuttle (the others still had some) and he in fact ate around the oats, not having had them before he didn't trust them.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to give it a try. I'll mix it in first - I still have some of the other stuff.

It really depends on the individual mix. What's in it? The more variety of ingredients, the better (generally) but keep in mind that your budgies are still only going to eat what they want and leave the rest. Lots of healthy veggies and other foods (like sprouts and wheatgrass will make more of a difference than decreasing millet.

my budgie and canary livev together so i mix budgie and canary seed together and my budgie loves it

Just remember to suppliment fresh vegatables and fruits with it. I also give a high protein mix to my Breeders.

It's god to mix a teaspoon of cod liver and wheat germ oil in with 500 grams of seed. To add vitamins. But remember that this will go off. If you only have a small number of birds, reduce the amounts.

You should read the fat contents and nutritional info on the back of the packets. That's what I did when I was deciding between budgie seed or canary seed and the canary seed had more fat content in it than the budgie seed, by quite alot. So I just bought the budgie seed.

Good point but remember that differnet mixes have different mixes. I use a mix that is made up by a top breeder and is low in fat.
