Is Lucerne/alfalfa Hay Ok For Budgies?

Featured Replies

I have these little bricks of hay (little hardened bales). It is lucerne (alfalfa) hay and I feed them to my chinchilla who loves them as they are compressed and very hard. I was wondering if these are okay for budgies. Will it be okay for their tummies? I thought I could hang a brick of it in their cage as it would be a good source of extra nutrition and nibbling oppertunities if it is okay. :feedbirds:

I have never heard of budgies eating lucerne hay before, they love any seeding grasses, spinach, sprouting seeds, and other vegies. But I dont think they would go for the hay.

Hay in this form I would imagine would have very little nutrtional value for birds. Also as they have no teeth to grind it up all they will end up doing is playing with it. There is always the danger of contamination by moulds which can be very dangerous to their health. Fresh anything is always best. They say, smell it and if it smells mushroomy then it has had mould. If it smells like fresh grass it is better in nutritional value, but it isn't being referred to as of any value to birds from what I have read.

I have one in Pretty's cage - in the budge pictures the title Not so Cocky Now, you can see how I hung it. I use it for the fact that it is hard something for him to chew and bite on he loves it. He doesn't go nuts but why not something to do right :hap:, I don't use it as a basis of nutrition just for chewing.

Im not totally sure what you mean by the bricks, but I know one of the members on a forum had said she had a hen die from getting hay stuck down her throat. She said it was an awfull death for her and would never go near hay again. I hope this helps.

I think she means it is those little bricks you can buy for your rabbits and gerbils to chew on. They are really tight, small pieces and they can't get long pieces off of it. At least that is what I have.

gotcha :-)
