New Cage Question

okay, so we have the new cage, not set up or anything but here is my question for all those who have introduced budgies to other budgies.

It was suggested I leave the set-up the way it is and then put them both in the new cage together once I decide they can share a cage (not from the day they are allowed to met).

or should I put Pretty in the big cage let him get adjusted to the new home and then intro Merlin when quarentine is over keep them in separate cages at first and then put them together?

I was going to put Merlin in Pretty's 1 bird sized cage, because the quarentine cage is very small.

What are you thoughts, opinions, views?

Thank you,

Lovey, I've had no problems introducing to date. But I haven't had a single bird. It has always been two meeting two or two meeting more than two. I do have the occasional night time squabble, but other than that they love each other.

Perhaps Pretty won't have been in the cage long enough to become territorial? It wil be new to him too? Good luck whatever you choose.

It's a big fat gamble. There are a few things you can do to reduce the chances of conflict though. First and foremost, if you decide to let Pretty have the cage first, remove anything he's attached to before introducing Merlin. You don't want him becoming posessive over a perch or toy and having squabbles in that department.

Honestly, I feel that with such an enormous amount of space and the fact that you have two male budgies, everything will go smoothly. If you want to be as cautious as humanly possible, introduce at the same time so that neither can stake a claim on the cage or anything within it.

You've got another advantage in that they're both flighted. I don't want to start rambling, but that will help in that neither budgie will feel less capable of getting away from the other.

I really think that no matter how you choose to go about it, things will go fine. Don't be surprised if they don't hit it off right away, though it's likely that they will. And don't worry if they bicker over things a bit, that's absolutely normal. The only time to worry is if they're getting seriously violent. And believe me, you'll know it if it happens. Keep a close eye on them and their behaviors and everything will go just fine.

(And take lots of pictures!)

Thanks Terri and Shawna, am I going to come back and read this over again and for anyone else who wants to add.

Pretty was obessed with his plastic balls they have been removed because he couldn't leave them alone. It think he was beating them up and then trying to feed them. So they have been gone and only to play with on the playgym.

Merlin is not flighted she didn't clip him the rescue did but for a clipped bird he has more flight then Pretty did. He actually reminds me of a hummingbird flapping his wing. He did get on top of the ceiling fan once :): thank goodness I don't run them when they are out.

I will take picture and video with my camera to get the initial reaction. ;)

I would actually put Pretty in first. When Blinkie got upgraded to his cage he went through an adjustment period where he liked the space and didn't want to come out anymore. I think, especially as your cage is even larger, that this would be easier to get over one budgie at a time and if later Merlin see's Pretty still wanting to come out he shouldn't be as tricky to get past that stage.

I haven't had any problems so far with that sort of thing.

When i got my new cage I put all my resident budgies in first and my quarintined budgie in later and it didn't worry anyone. Ithink you should put Pretty in first, because he'll have time to get used to that and won't be stressed by both meeting Merlin and being in a new cage. Merlin however has to go through that. :hap: Also the cage will be standing there looking at you, willing you to put birdies in there and you won't be able to resist. :(Laughing out loud):
