Posted May 1, 200619 yr Hi all!! I really need your help. i am getting my baby budgie hopefully this week. I have a cage for him temporarily, but wanted a new one. I found a cage at Petsmart, but i'm not sure how it would be. I looked on every website i could find and can't find any information on it so if anyone has any opinions about it, they woudl be greatly appreciated. i will put the link to the picture becuase i can't get the picture on here. I will also put as much info about the cage. The link is http://prevuepet.com/paraket4.html. It is the triple roof cage #1804TR. Dimensions are 24 1/2 L x 13 W x 19 H. The doors don't have latches which is why it may be so cheap ($36.99) I figured i could use zip ties for the food cups (becuase i am getting covered cups that attach inside the cage). Are zip ties okay and just replace them when they start to get chewed? And get some kind of clip for the door. I was a bit worried about the triple roof, is that comfortable for the bird? And the cage is longer which i thought was better for budgies instead of high. Am i right or wrong about that? okay i think that's it. If i missed anything please let me know and thank you all so much in advance for your help. Sorry about the long post and by the way, it would fit one budgie (hopefully 2 one day). THanks all!!!!
May 1, 200619 yr I think longer is definately better than higher. I'm no expert on cages, but I think it should be fine for a single budgie, and probably 2. The price seems reasonable too.
May 1, 200619 yr I think it would work well for one budgie. I'm picky so prefer that it's more deep (13 inches is a bit shallow) but it would work. If you're like me, you'll probably change up cages quite a few times after you have your budgie in there a while. If you are planning on two budgies, I'd go for something more square even at the top. Ebay's a great place. In face, I saw one of the best single budgie cages there yesterday for cheap and it came with a stand. I'll hunt for the link for you if you're interested.
May 1, 200619 yr I'm definitely interested!! Thanks eterri. I actually need a stand as well so that would be perfect
May 1, 200619 yr http://demsondpetdepot.com/Merchant2/merch...egory_Code=BCWS Shipping is free on that site. It would be a good size for a single budgie and you'll be surprised just how handy that large swing out door will be. I couldn't live without large cage doors now. I've had cages without them and it was so hard to arrange things! This is from the same seller and the same cage as the one on ebay but it's a little cheaper in the link I provided since it's from his online store. Edited May 1, 200619 yr by eterri
May 1, 200619 yr yes...i use to have that cage! I had a breeding pair in it! It was great! more than enough room for a pair, with a max of 8 babies for a couple months! Id say, your fine with 2 in that...no more than that though! That is provided they get a lot of free flying time! Kirby
May 2, 200619 yr Careful with zip ties, they can have zinc in them which is poisonous to birds. They are slide up down doors, you shouldn't need latches for those and if you budgie does figure out how to open them (mine never did in the 6 years that I have used my cage) use clothes pegs to hold them shut. May 2, 200619 yr Oh my goodness :fear Thanks Sailorwolf, I had no idea zip ties had zinc in them! I know budgies can be some pretty smart and sneaky birds so I was a bit worried to leave it them unlatched. I guess it is pretty difficult to squeeze out of a door you lifted with your mouth Haha!! The baby i'm getting is only about 6-7 weeks old so I probably don't have to worry about latching the doors right now. I can take my time and think of something safe and effective. And I will definitely ask all of you first if my ideas are okay. i don't know what I would do without this website and all of you on it Edited May 2, 200619 yr by karma-k
May 2, 200619 yr Budgies have been known to open these doors, and get their heads stuck as they shut on them. Play it safe, and use a wooden clothes peg (the spring type) to hold them shut. Just replace as the budgie chews the wood on the peg
May 2, 200619 yr i was really worried about the roof too. i know it will be hard to hang things from the top, but would it be okay for the budgie? Will he get used to the weird shape of the top of the cage and not hurt himself or anything?
May 3, 200619 yr I personally don't like strangely shaped cages. You'd be better finding a square/rectangular cage as you'll find you can make much better use of the space!
May 10, 200619 yr Here's the update...I purchased the cage that was in my first post. Unfortunately I don't have pictures yet, but soon when he/she's in it. I seem to have plenty of room so i'm not too worried anymore about it beign too small. i am using wooden clothespins for the doors as everyone (including my breeder) suggested. I did have one more little question. I swear you would not know that I had a budgie before :fear Well it was my entire family's so I had nothing to do with cage setup. Do they have to be able to jump from one perch to another or can you put them all over the cage and they will get on them somehow (by climbing the cage side or flying)?
June 19, 200619 yr Just a note on the 1804TR - take care with the top. I was searching to see if others had experiences similar to mine, and came across your post. One of my budgies hopped from my hand while being replaced in the cage and quickly made his way to the top (the round part), where he attempted to get into the cage by going under the side "roof", and got his head caught in the space between the edge of the flat side roof and the rounded part. Luckily I was right there and was able to pull the side roof off to free him before he freaked out too much, or he could have injured himself severely. I notified Prevue Hendryx of this and got a response that they would look into whether a modification was needed. Also, my female was climbing the back of the cage and was going to cross the top and got her toe caught in a narrow gap between the top of the roof and the back wall of the cage - so make sure that you have it assembled straight and tight to eliminate gaps - of course, that's something to be careful of with any knock-down style cage. Meanwhile, I'm looking for another - would like to find one that's at least 30" wide x 18" deep by 18+ to 24" high. A drawbridge style door and slide out grate above the bottom tray would be definitely pluses. Anyone seen anything like that? Edited June 19, 200619 yr by John Paul
