Whats Wrong With My Baby Budgies?

Featured Replies

Posted

I am hand rearing 3 4-week old budgies and they are looking a bit strange. The feathers around their face have a curly look about them and are quite fluffy. One of them is very cranky and tries to bite me. I am wondering if there is a genetic problem with them?? The mother is a pied and father is a normal. Any help would be appreciated.

Are their crops full? Some of mine had feathers like that when I was feeding them, I thought it was because I got their faces pretty messy with the dropper.

Can you get a picture of them, it might help someone to tell if they are okay

Why did you take them from their parents so soon?

Yes, their crops are full Will try to post a picture of them so you can see what they are like. I hand rear them from a young age as I sell them to the pet shop and they very popular (and spoilt) pets.

French moult looks more as if the chicks where plucked. It where the feather falls out before growing in fully. I think a picture is in need, but if your really worried take them for a visit to an avain vet, if one is near you.

Cinnamon Colbalt (Violet) Male ..... can't decide on the colour. ... Looks like he is feeding himself...

umm what are you feeding them?

Does the male parent look the same?

How long has he been looking like this?

They are really ravenous all the time, they just cant get enough feed. I am feeding them a hand rearing mix from the pet shop. Their crops look like they are going to burst sometimes, they are always squarking like they are hungry. I am sure they are not normal. The male parent is the same colour and they have looked like this the last week or so. Someone said they might be inbred (unbeknown to me, I might have put a related pair together, would that cause this sort of thing?) The owner of these birds said they were not related when I bought them).

Is the male shaking his head after eating?

Is there small amounts of food coming from his mouth when he shakes his head?

No, he doesnt shake his head and no food comes from his mouth, they look 'oversize' for their age. Have I bred some sort of freaks???

No you haven't breed any freaks, I was worried that the male parent might have developed a crop infection and have given it to the chicks.

This would explain the muck around the faces.

The shaking of head with small food coming out is the bird throwing up. Possible canker or another crop infection. There should be no running poops in the cage as well unless the hen has started another round?

Keep an eye onthem if you are feeding vegetables great. If this is caused by seed, I'd think of geting the male parent checked out by a vet.

They certainly dont behave like all my other hand reared birds. By now they shouldnt be scared of me when I go near them and they shouldnt be hungry all the time. The parents dont seem to have any infection of any kind. I saw them mating again yesterday so I think I will seperate them so this doesnt happen again.

My first thought was feather duster, which produces curly feathers and usually the babies are larger than other babies at the same age. But they don't look like a feather duster at all. Any suggestions?

I just looked at the picture again and yes, they are definately NOT feather dusters
