May 2, 200619 yr Sometimes a very "attached" owner becomes suddenly less attached when money is involved. I know it's not ideal but maybe she'd sell him to you. At the very least, go to a pet store and pick up some supplies to give her. If you have anything extra you can donate to the cause, do so. It doesn't have to be in an insulting fashion. I've done this a few times now, just saying I have extra things that I don't need anymore and offering them to people whose birds could really use better food, toys, perches, etc. Try and strike up a friendship with her. I know the bird is doing poorly but he could very well just be in need of food more frequently or cleaner living conditions. Get as close to the budgie as possible so that you can be around to do the things she's not doing herself. It's not fair, but sometimes that's the only way we can help. And maybe she'll eventually change her mind. Either way, he'll be getting fed better and housed better than he probably is now.

He's got a great cage and toys, it's just the food and cleaning :hap: I sent some pellets and better seed home with my roommate last week so he should be getting some of that now. I really hope he makes it because he's awesome. I spent my whole life being terrified of birds until I met him.
May 2, 200619 yr Maybe you could send her a budgie care book, that encourages cleaning and healthy food. Hopefully she'll read it
May 12, 200619 yr I was at a bird store once buying seed, when an elderly gentleman brought his even more elderly father in to buy a budgie. They went to great lengths to pick out a "special little man" and as they walked to their car, I was thinking....I have some lovely baby budgies they could have had for half that price. Then I saw them put the budgie in his new cage about 10 inches by 10 inches by 12 inches high, with no room to fly in. They both lit up cigarettes and put the cage, budgie and themselves in their car to leave.....smoking heavily and saying ..." I hope this one lasts longer than the last one did " !! I was horrified and so very glad none of my babies was going to this home These to stories make me sick! Isn't that size cage for canaries? Don't buy a budgie if you don't want to take care of it! I mean you can't just stop feeding him it's torture.

June 12, 200619 yr she probably does have a great attachment to him, so here is where all you can do is give her some budgie book, teach her responsible pet ownership in a gentle manner. There are some people in this world who have no sense of dedication, education, and devotion to care for pets as they ought to be cared for. When I was a kid I had goldfish. Two of them lived for 4 years and the rest for about a year. Then we got a dog, a schnauzer/poodle mix runt that was given away to us by someone I knew. She lived for 14 years and we took good care of her. She got lots of loving. Now, my brother gave me two beautiful budgies for my birthday back in January. I love these birds! They are a real delight to me and make me smile and laugh. Having a pet is a responsibility and an honor. I don't understand why people who don't want to take care of a living thing bother to HAVE a pet! Yes, ciggy smoke is overlooked in regards to animal care as well. I don't smoke, so I know my birds will have a long, healthy life. I don't like being around ciggy smoke or sit by people who do. Animal abuse is out there, but unfortunately they pay more attention to cats and dogs than they do to the birds and reptiles who are also under our care. I say our care because many reptiles and birds do fine out in the wild. It's a matter of the kind of person taking care of them.
