Posted April 16, 200619 yr Hi. We've just built an aviary and stocked with ten budgies. We would like to start breeding them - but with only a few at first. Does anyone have any advice/handy tips as to what to feed them and keep the budgies happy, since my dad, who used to breed budgies, says that some budgies don't like breeding cages. Is that true?? Any help would be appreciated. Toffeefluff.
April 16, 200619 yr Welcome You have come to the right place to learn. And that is what I would suggest you do before you start breeding your budgies. There is so much to think about - are your birds old enough, are they related, proper diet, what will you do if you the hen doesn't look after the chicks, etc. Start by reading the Budgerigar Breeding sections of this forum. And best of luck to you. Edited May 2, 200619 yr by daz
May 2, 200619 yr Hi toffeefluff I agree with Shawna. You will need to read up on breeding before you put any nest boxes or breeding cages in. *Please ask questions. *Read through the existing posts. *Visot Breeders and see how they do it. *Join a club.
May 2, 200619 yr Here are some really good sites on breeding your birds: http://www.geocities.com/budgie-place/p_breeding.html http://www.budgerigars.co.uk/dir.html They are really good and I'm absorbing all of their information at the moment Edited May 2, 200619 yr by Sailorwolf
May 2, 200619 yr Right Now I ust have some questions. *How old are your birds? *Are any related? It also helps us to know the sort of things you do know about breeding and such so we can get a better picture on how to help you. says that some budgies don't like breeding cages, Is that true?? I'm not sure on how true that is, it might have been down to the way the cages where set up. Some need the sound of others breeding start their cycle and some do better when the can see another pair across the way (another cage) Also not all budgies will like the bird that 'we' pair them too. Trying a different partner will sometime result in a successful clutch. Welcome to the place, I'm sure later we will all love hearing about your birds. Have you a digit camera to show us pictures of your little flock? We love photos here.

We know for one thing is that they are not related because we checked with their owners before buying them. The second pair have sort of paired already but a few nights ago, the first pair started fighting on the bottom of the breeding cage, do you have any ideas of why this behaviour is occuring between this pair? :fear :redalbino
May 8, 200619 yr thoses ages sound good, just remember hen are normally stopped at age 3 but can have another clutch at age 4 years. If they are fighting it's best to split them up, you can retry to see if they get accepted again. Was it a big fight or was the male trying to court her a bit to strongly? Sometime no matter what we want the birds will not take to a partner that we pick.
