Squeaka Doesnt Make A Sound

Squeaka is a one year old girl budgie. We have kept her away from the aviary since she was 6 wks but she can still hear the budgies in the the aviary.

Recently when looking after a friends 5 month old budge. we noticed how little noise Squeaka makes now. I mean, she chatters when we annoy her, but she doesnt just talk to herself anymore or sing along with the budgies outside.

Another thing is that she acts like an old lady. The bird we are looking after climbs up and dow the ladders, in and out the rings and bobs up and down all the time but Squeaka just sits there and will sleep most of the day.

Is there something wrong with her?

has she changed her behavior since you got her - like was she playful and noiser before?

Every bird has a different personality, example my Pretty (male) reserved, doesn't really play much - just started to play with his 2 plastic balls, and he is really not that noisy. Compare him to Bea's Blinks and there is a huge difference, Blinks is very playful, flirty, and follows Bea everywhere. She also had him at a very very young age, I got Pretty when he was around 3 months old.

If she hasnt changed her behaviour since youve had her then it could just be her personality. I have a budgie just like it Patty she doesnt play sings a bit doesnt really interact with the other budgies other than to bite their feet through the cage. She is a miserable snot.

On the other hand if this behaviour has just started I would definitely see a vet to have her checked over.

The thing is that she when she was about 6 wks-5mths she was just as playfull and noisy as the bird that we are looking after.

she may have settled down, maybe she had a bad experience with another one of your budgies that you don't know that quieted her down, or maybe she is going through a phase? The best bet for reassurance would would be an avian vet check to make sure everything is okay.

It could also be that she really wants to breed.

I had to put Squirt outside to let her breed as when she was around 12-14 months old she really got desperate to be with other birds (turned out to be male birds!).

When I put her with a male she became like her old self and happy again.

Thats a good idea Karen,

Ill just have to convince my Mum to part with Skueaka for a bit.

Thankyou to everyone for helping me

Since she used to be playful and make noisey this marks a change a behavior. A quick trip to the avian vet should be made to rule out any sort of illness. Get as thorough an exam as possible. If everything comes back clear then it might be time to consider getting her a friend if you are able to feed, house, vet and give time to another bird. :ausb:

A friend might be a good idea but please don't feel that she has to breed to be happy. It's a huge undertaking. A friend would likely cheer her up though. Just be prepared in the case that they don't get along. (It's fairly rare but it does happen that way sometimes!)

Hi, I would be really interested in finding out what happened with your bird. I have just had my male bird exhibit an identical personality change and he's about 6 months old. He suddenly went from a perky noisy happy chirpy bird that took a kip or two through the day to a bird that hardly makes a noise and sleeps all the time. He is eating and drinking normally and looks sharp in the eyes, its just the personality that has changed. If you have any follow up from your experience. it would be great to hear how you went.
