i noknow males have to be at least a 1 year old to mate but what about females.

The same. 12 months minimum, preferably 18 months. And you shouldn't use a hen which is over 3-4 years for breeding.

why cant i use a hen that is 3-4 years old?

Because after that age they are getting too old and the strain of breeding (laying, raising) becomes too much for the hen. Also, the risk of egg-binding increases.

:( I am sorry but I am getting on my bandwagon here, WHY is it so important to you to breed these guys, is it really the best thing for them to do? Think about the birds, they are pets as you have so few, they are not breeding machines. :rip:
