Fruit Salad

My birds love this I tried it the other day.

In a big bowl I chopped up strawberries, mango, kiwi and oranges and stuck the bowl on top of their cages, they took a while to suss it out but had a balll picking at all the different fruit. I wasnt sure how oranges would go down but they all loved bursting the juice out of the little segments.

Give it a go guys!

Make sure to reserve it as a rare treat though. Fruit is very sugary and doesn't offer a whole lot of nutrition. Sounds like a good treat though!

Sounds great i mean id eat it :( infact i could go for some fruit salad right now but i know the budgies would turn tail and run from their fruit:P

Oh yeah they get this once a fortnight on a Saturday afternoon. The Saturday they dont get it they get homeade egg food. Spoilt little birds hehe!

Boomberry I did some reseach and found that Citus acid (Citus Fruit) was a cure for Mega bateria so it goes that oranges will be good to help restrict Mega.. :hap: Well Done

Yum Yum that sounds great!! Cheeky used to love oranges too! I don't think you can give them too much though because it can cause a yeast infection.

Your wee birds are spoiled rotten! :hap:

Oh thanks for pointing that out Ali.

They are really spoilt but I love seeing their happy little faces when they get something they love.

Two of my tiels however sulk with everything I give them - little snots!

Wow I never thought of offering oranges to my budgies!

I am so glad I read this post. Many thanks :)

Talking of fruit salad - I was in the greengrocer a few weeks ago and there was a woman next to me buying a whole box of mixed exotic (and expensive) fruits including lychees, rambutan, starfruit, custard apple as well as local fruit like stonefruit and berries, apples, bananas etc.

She proudly boasted (in the best possible way) to me and the cashier that she was the very proud to have just got another (some unknown species) exotic parrot and the expensive fruit was for them.

We're in Australia so whatever type of bird she was buying the fruit for was not an indigenous species but something she was planning to breed with as she already had one of the opposite sex. She said the babies will sell for over $800 each!

Maybe they were some kind of South American Parrot?

Whatever - she gave me some good advice on buying very expensive exotic fruits for parrots ! :fear

sounds like an eccletus Smudgie.... They sell for about that price.. hehe. could be something else of course.... :D

All my birds love their fruits, but they do prefer the green over that fruit though...

If oranges are good for fighting megabacteria, do you think they'd be okay to give to Foobles while he's being treated for it? Also, if wild parrots like nectar would it be okay to give a budgie dilute apple juice for a change from water or is water all they can drink?

I'm learning so much from this forum but realising how much more I still have to learn! :hap:

Mine love their fruit. I put on their kabob feeder sliced apple, orange, and today they got strawberries. I give them fruit every 2-3 days, vegies daily.

I'm going to try the fruit kabob idea. Mine don't bother too much with fruit so far but they may go for a kabob assortment.
