Not Again Tobi!

Yes my Tobi girl is sick again and another respiratory infection, she isnt as bad as last time not by a long way but she has mostly lost her flight again and isnt bullying the others which isnt normal for her.

She is on antibiotics and probiotics for a few more days so fingers crossed she is going to be okay. Im not as worried as I was last time about her and she is still eating and drinking fine so thats good.

Oh why does my baby girl have to be sick all the time.

aw poor wee thing I hope she gets better soon.

hugs

Can I ask is there something that you use in your home or around your yard, or even the neighbors that could she could be sensitive that you may have not thought about because your other birds are okay?

Definitely not I am super paranoid about stuff like that, no air freshners, teflon, smoke, plants etc are used in my home at all.

For some reason though she seems prone to infection and has spent most of her first year in and out the vets.

I bought her a funky new perch toy today to cheer her up - I would have taken a picture but the temp girl who covered my hols has broken the camera grrrrrrrrrrr.

how about the cleaners you use in your home?

She could be sensitive to them.

Nope because I only use hot soapy water because of the same reasons. I sometimes use pure lemon juice to clean window etc and it gives a lovely fresh clean smell, but nothing chemical is used in my house.

Its hard to pin point unless she never really got over the bad bout she had in the new year.

crazy at it may sound she may have some type of allergy that is making her immune system weak or it could be that she just has a weaker immune system period.

Yeah I think it could be thats she has a weaker immune system maybe.

Anyways thanks for your help and I hope she is going to be okay. I'll take some pictures over the weekend of her and her new perch I bought her.

well I don't feel I was a help (Laughing out loud) but no problem.

Yes would love to see pictures of her :)

Any response that was trying to help is worthy of thanks.

Her probiotic has a garlic extract and smells gross so not only do I have a sickly budgie but a very smelly one hehe(only joking she doesnt smell of garlic)

I was reading the other day that a lot of birds seem to react badly to wheat (especially tiels that pluck). It was suggested to use a wheat free seed mix for a week or so, and see if that seems to fix any problems. Also, what about your perfume, Boomhubby's shaving cream etc etc. They seem to infiltrate the whole house, so, even if you use them at the other end of the house they can affect the birds.

Oh I wear perfume but I only spray it a couple times and then go out I dont wear it when I get back but that could be it. Boomhubby doesnt shave with cream Lin he has the unshaven look hehe. Perfume is the only thing it could be with regard to chemical stuff. I will smell in future.

So sorry to hear that poor little Tobi is sick again. I hope she recovers soon for both your sake. :)

Thoughts are still with her. :) Has she ever had bloodwork done?

:) Poor Tobi, hope she gets better soon. My Rosey Bourke (age 7) as been healthy all her life but has had pneumonia twice in the last 6 months. There seems to be no rhyme nor reason for it but most of the birds are on carpeted floor unfortunately so the vet says to move Rosey into another room when I am vacuuming so I have started doing that. The vet says it would seem vacuuming is a good thing but it stirs up all the dust and dander. :)

Did you know that a common chemical ingredient in carpets is Formaldehyde ? There are a great many dangerous chemicals in our homes in the floors and walls, blinds, and also the products we use. I learnt this from a great book I had once I think was called "the natural House book" Try these links for further info http://www.nontoxic.com/nontoxic/formaldehyde.html http://www.greenpeace.org.uk/Products/Toxics/ http://www.creationresource.org/health/health_article.htm

 Glad I avoided the "Scotchguard" last time budgiebird and although everybody else was locked in the kitchen during the carpet cleaning two weeks ago, I had Rosey downstairs with my landlord. :(

Karen, you are absolutely correct and I didn't even think about that. This is what I do for a living, learning about safer products for the home and teaching others. Keep her off the carpets...all your birds.

One of the major ingredients in many products is called Quaternium-15 or Q-15 this is a formaldehyde releasing agent and is found in even baby products. You can do your own research type it into a search engine but be prepared to be shocked. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quaternium-15

I also have article on this information.

Scary about the fact that it is found in babies talcum powder too. Obviously anything that harms us in small quantities is a large amount to a budgie. We are totally unaware of most things until we have a reason to search deeper to find answers.....and when we find these answers they can be scary.

On a side note re chemicals. I am actually allergic to artificial sweeteners. It caused me to research the artificial sweetener thing. Did you know that the artificial sweeteners used in Diet ****, ***** etc when heated created a chemical formaldehyde cocktail? When the troop were in the faulklands and **** and ***** sent free pallet loads of their drinks to the troops. These drinks would sit out in the sun until drunk. The medical symptoms that these boys suffered and was later named Faulklands war syndrome (just like they named the symptoms of Agent orange in the vietnam war )...........was in actual fact the formaldehyde effect of the artificial sweetener being brought to fruition by heating up in the sun. Look into artificial sweeteners. You will be shocked. If I drink anything with artificial sweetener in it I lose my voice. Also my sister who is diabetic drinks this stuff by the bucketload. There is a whole range of symptoms that it creates that perpetuate the very symptoms of diabetes. Better off drinking water.

:( What shall I do without diet ****?" Fotunately I like water. :(

Terri she hasnt had any blood work done but it might be worth doing if this thing isnt going to go away for good. She is back at the vets on Tuesday so I'll ask his advice.

Luckily I dont have carpet in the rooms the birds are in - I have wooden floors.

dust on the floors? We have hard wood floors and no matter how much I dusted them (with or without a cleaner) they still got dusty, they really love to accumluate dirt, fuzz etc..

I guess so but there is no way I could ever prevent that is there. I do almost everything by the book with my birdies but thats something I cant do much about.
