I'm New And So Is My Budgie

I just bought this little baby today. I watched (him/her) playing with the others. She drank and ate and played on the wheel with other birds. I love her coloring and that is what really attracted me to him a couple a days ago. Anyway, I brought her home and he really didn't seem that upset about anything. She even did that quiet little chirping...I left and when I came home she was on the floor of the cage...eating the gravel and some millet spray that had fallen. Now he seems real quiet and she's puffed up. He'll sit on my finger and fall asleep. Is this because she's warn out from the different surroundings? ...or is something maybe wrong? Nose is clear...he drank water from the tip of my finger but I haven't seen her go to the water dish on his own...and if I send a picture...can you give me an idea if she is female or is he male :-)

By The Way, my name is Sharon. I'm 51 and the last time I've been around a budgie was when I was 10. Right now she is sleeping with his head in his wings...is this good? I think she is really young....he's tiny but her coloring is beautiful! Also, I do work....I have heard that they would get lonely, though, I have two poodles and a severe macaw in the same room, which is where I spend most of my time. If I get another budgie later will they become less tame?

Thank you

sharon

Hi and welcome! I'll try to answer your questions the best I can.

First, age of the budgie. Baby budgies have 'bars' on their forehead. The further down to their cere (beak) the younger they are. Sounds like your little one could be exhausted, but it is hard to tell. See how he/she goes. If you post a picture we can give you an idea of the age. Sleeping with their head at their back is normal. What are the poops like?

Have you quarantined your new one? Birds hide illnesses and so need to be kept seperate for at least a month to see if any signs of illness. As far as becoming less tame - well, yes sometimes this does happen. However, if you have a good bond with your bird, and use the quarantine time to develop a good bond with the new one, then it shouldn't happen. Maybe lose a bit,but the joy of watching 2 budgies interact (think naughty little school children!) is so much fun.

Just a warning for you. Usually when the budgie settles they go through an 'escape at any cost' stage. They will try maniacally to escape, and it can be quite scary to see. Perfectly normal behaviour, and stops after a few days.

Getting a second budgie is really a matter of choice. Things to weigh up are: sometimes 2 birds will just never get along, not often, but can you provide seperate cages permanently if this happens?

Welcome to the forums. You will find lots of people here willing to help. I'm fairly new to budgies myself so still asking lots of questions.

I would keep an eye on your budgie. You are lucky if it is so tame already. The fluffing up can be a sign of illness but my budgies fluff all the time and are okay.

Budgies don't need much water. I have 8 and I have only ever seen a couple drink. I just make sure there is always water available so that if they want it, it is there.

Looking forward to seeing a picture of your bird. It sounds gorgeous! A picture will help the experts identify the type of budgie and the sex.

Enjoy the forums.

Hello, Welcome to the forums I also bought a my budgie couple days ago (8) and I still don't know if its a him/her. http://budgietalk.com/ is a nice page where you can learn a lot of stuff about budgies and how to tell the difference between a female and a male. Have fun.

My new budgie of 5 days, Beka, is doing this right now. It is causing me a great deal of anxiety watching her!!! It doesn't help that she actually did escape once through a food dish opening. Now she is chewing at the bars constantly, pulling at food dishes (her first means of escape), clawing at the plastic side of the cage. Her cage mate Star seems rather annoyed by it all, snapping at her from time to time, but every once in awhile she will join in too. I sure hope that it stops after a few days :budgiedance:  :dbb1:

Hi Everyone! Thank you for the fast reply. The bars on her head are very light because of her coloring. However, they do extend to the cere. She has to really young. She thinks my finger is a bird. She'll drink from it and if I act like my finger is eating the food, she'll starting eating . God, what a cutie (he/she) is. Her vent is clear and she'll get animated for about 5 mins and then she'll puff up and fall asleep. She sat on her cage all morning. She's tiny! I can't imagine her going into escape mode. She did try to fly to the window because there were little sparrows flying in the trees. But, she stepped up on my finger and we went to the window and watched the birds flying and she'd pick at my finger very lightly...very calm. I'm really falling for this little thing awfully fast. How do I put a picture of her on this site.

Awww, she sounds a sweetie. Go to the picture section, and read the pinned topic.

Here's another picture of the little baby...can you tell from the pictures whether the liitle one is male or female? Is this a spangle?

Your second picture didn't work, but from the first picture I would say female. It looks whitish around the nostrils

Thank you, Phoebe! It's more blurry than I'd like it to be...might be better at night with a flash. I just can't believe, though, how she isn't frightened of anything. Is that because she's soo young that she doesn't know any better or is there a certain percentage that are tame from the beginning. She really didn't act any different in the store than the other birds. She looked active and happy but it was her coloring that really caught my eye. I''ve just about decided to name her, Tammy. My mother had a parakeet named Tammy. She got her when I was about 3 years old. She was still alive when I was 12. I would play the song "Tammy" on my record player  in my bedroom and no matter where Tammy was in the house within 10 sec. she'd be in my room on the needle arm (pooping on the album) singing her name "Tammy" along with Debbie Reynolds. I use to get the biggest kick out of that! I know that I was probably bad, but I use to move the phonograph to different rooms. She'd go from room to room until she found it...poor baby! Even then, I was amazed that she would make the connection...her name with the song. My mother said that her Tammy went on her finger in the store. Maybe this is a reincarnation :-)

You might have gotten lucky with a breeder that handled the babies a lot in the nest. Therefore, she's used to people! Keep up the good work

welcome!

Tammy is SO cute. how lucky you are to have found such an easy going baby!

I asked the clerk where they came from. I had to sign some papers because some birds from California had come in with a disease that was transferable to humans. I don't know if it's federal law or state law but they have to keep track of the people that buy birds now or something. She said that they came from Oklahoma.

  • 2 weeks later...

I think Tammy might actually be a boy. Tammy's cere looks exactly like Arkady's cere looks like now and Arkady is definately a boy, (because his cere was originally pink, now it is turning blue). It looks to me like Tammy's cere is changing from pink to blue. However it could just be the picture. How does Tammy act? Does he/she bob her/his head up and down as she runs side ways along the perches? Does he sing continuosly, almost non stop at times? Does she bob her head at his toys and poof up her head? Becuase all that I have described is common male behaviour. Females don't really sing, they just do a few loud chirps and "angry"noises and are less 'bouncy'. Yeah. I'm just saying this because fromt he pictures the rings around her nostrils look blue, whihc would mean that he is developing her adult cere colour.

No...she really doesn't do those antics. So, when should I know for sure? I would put her around seven to eight weeks old. How old is your little guy?

Looks male to me and very adorable. :)

Thank you, etteri! He/she is beautiful...doesn't act like a male, though. Could h/s be too young yet?

Your bird is adorable. Looks like my Tweety. Here is a picture of her at 7-8 weeks (I think). Next to her is my male around the same age. See the difference in their ceres. Perhaps that will help you.

what a perfect shot for her Shawna!

I HATE when this happens! You buy a bird, think its one sex, then others think the other sex, and it ends up being a different one then what you thought of!...(Laughing out loud)..Tammy's case is like my Tangos. The 1st day home, his cere was pink with blue, then second day, it was white rings around the nostrils, then from then on, it has been pink, blue, and white...But 'he' doesnt sing, isnt active, and likes to chew branches more than play with toys..which sounds like a female to me, but the cere is all pink now, and everyone else thinks its a boy...which i hope he is! This is just like your case Shereno! Maybe our birds should get together!... (Laughing out loud)...
