Posted February 27, 200619 yr Yesterday I was clipping my budgie's wing and her back toe accidentally caught in the scissors It started bleeding so my mom and I put hydrogen peroxide on it and it scabbed up (thankfully). Well today when I looked at it I saw that I had cut off the entire toe! Now I know the nail does grow back...does this mean that she'll have a toe again? I feel like a bird murderer
February 27, 200619 yr the toe and the nail will not grow back, I would suggest a visit to the Avian Vet ASAP to avoid any type of infection today. They may put her on antibiotics to avoid infection. Please do not blame yourself, I know you love your budgie or you would not be here asking for help. Again, I recommend a vet trip ASAP. Please keep us updated.
February 27, 200619 yr Oh you poor thing. I know what you are going through. Once when I had rats, my budgie landed on top of the cage and the rat bit his toe. I thought that she had completely bitten it off and I felt so horrible. Luckily she didn't but my budgie's toe was paralysed for the rest of his life. What I am saying is don't blame yourself, it was an accident and it wasn't your fault. Like Lovey said, the fact that you are posting on here, shows that you care. Get your budgie to the vet as soon as possible, because she could get an infection and have resultant muscle and nerve damage.
February 27, 200619 yr What a terrible experience for both you and your budgie! Please, like Lovey and Sailorwolf have already said, take your budgie to an avian vet TODAY as the vet will probably give you some medicine for pain relief and to stop infection. Your budgie will still be able to get around as usual without it's toe, i have a budgie that only has one full toe left and she gets around fantastically in my aviary with the other budgies. Please keep us updated with any news about your budgie!
February 28, 200619 yr It was an accident so don't blame yourself and to the vet ASAP!! And as somebody said in an earlier post, no, they don't grow back, my budgies bit off my Rosey Bourkes toenail and part of her toe but 5 years later she is fine but no regrowth, it's like us having our fingers/toes amputated.
March 1, 200619 yr Thank you guys all so much for your helpful comments and for your sympathy! I don't feel like such a terrible person anymore, haha. Misty's doing just fine =). No more bleeding, and she went right back to normal and is jumping around her cage and eating and drinking just fine. Thanks again!
March 1, 200619 yr Good to hear she's okay. :ausb: Accidents happen but it's so relieving when they turn out okay in the end. Were you able to have her seen by a vet? They might want to put her on some sort of antibiotic to prevent infection or pain medication. Sometimes they can be in pain but not show it. ....the dangers of clipping wings. :bluebudgie: There is an element of danger to most things we do with budgies (nail clipping, wing clipping, even the toys we put in the cage). We just have to be as careful as possible. How you restrain a bird makes a big difference. Always make sure you wrap them in a washcloth or small towel with the feet tucked under the body and the wing stretched out so that you can see exactly what is being cut. It also helps to cut one feather at a time to prevent cutting too much.
