Posted February 25, 200619 yr Hello gang Chico - our oldest budgie has not been his normal self for the last week. We first noticed he was puffing up on occasions last week, and spending a lot of time in one corner. However, by the next day he was back to his old self. I did notice at the time, the poop underneath where he was sitting had a slight yellowy/green shade to it (but it wasn`t totally changed in colour). Anyways, we let him out of the cage the following day and he immediately took flight and landed on Kelley`s head!!! Yes, he loves sitting on heads and tugging at hair!! For a few days after, he was his normal self fluttering, hopping, chirping and trying to rip at my finger Today, he is back to being puffed up, and is breathing heavier than normal and spending a lot of time in the same corner by baby (his plastic bird!!). His poop has gone back to that yellowy/green colour. When we go and see him, he wakes up but he has that tired look as if to say will guys leave me alone!! When he`s up, he`s still eating and climbing up the cage to find the better millet at the top! Joey, our other budgie in the other cage is his normal self and chirping to Chico, but I think he knows Chico is not well. Sorry I could be more descriptive. He`s always been a tough bird, and I never imagine him becoming sick. Any suggestions? Thanks guys.
February 25, 200619 yr You should move Joey to a completely different room to reduce the risk of him becoming sick too. Chico does sound sick so the only thing i can recommend is to get him to an AVIAN vet asap and keep him in a warm spot in the house.
March 6, 200619 yr Do we have an update on this little man? I didn't see this post the first time, I jhope he is o becuase the behaviour of sitting fluffed up and sleeping alot is a big sign screaming 'sick bird' to other bird while us humand think they are just having an off day.
March 8, 200619 yr The avian vet believes he either has mites or possibly a liver problem. She recommended us a liquid treatment, where you put a small drop in his feather/skin, it soaks right through his feathers/skin and it is supposed to relieved the itching. She examined him thoroughly and yes he had a tantrum. She found no abnormalities (lumps etc). She said if the mite treatment makes no difference or he gets worse, it is highly likely to be a liver problem Fingers crossed I will say he still appears extremely lively at times. When the vet tried to hold him, he got escaped and did several laps around the room, chirping at the same time!! before settling on her computer screen chirping again He has little spells, where he is his old bad tempered self, then starts to get tired, fluffs up his feathers and starts digging at his body like he`s itching like crazy.
