Cuttlebone Question

Featured Replies

The lady at the pet store told us to collect some cuttlebone from the beach for Levi :ausb:

Do I need to clean it ? And if so, how?

Thanks

The main thing is to get the salt out. Soak in water, keep changing the water til it isn't salty anymore and then dry in the sun

I've tried this ones. I found a big cuttlebone on the beach and wanted to clean it. It became sooo smelly, that I just threw it away :) . I probably didn't clean it the right way. Now I rather buy them :):D

yes it is okay but you have to clean it very well i prefer to buy it it is then sure to be clean :D

Thanks everyone.

The one thats in his cage now is a shop-bought one. I will try and get the ones from the beach cleaned and see how it goes. Seems like a shame to have to buy them when there are so many on the beach. I will see how it goes.

i didnt like the smell of them when i got them from the beach they were all right when cleaned but i threw them away as i couldnt be 100% sure they wernt contaminated

You may also have to watch out for chemicals aswell as salt. If the sea's clean where you are then they should be safe. Wouldn't dare use them from round the coast of the UK.
