Posted February 4, 200619 yr Hi guys, can someone tell me if it is best to cover fluffys cage at night if i am still up? we got fluffy today, he is a green/yellow 6 week old boy from a breeder in middlesex (london) UK. When we got him out the box and put him in his new cage he sat on the spot for about 30 mins then started pecking around at the seed i put down on the floor. after he filled his crop he climbed his new ladder and sat on his perch (covered with sand cover) and he has has not moved for over 5 hours. he has not had a drink of water either. he will let me stroke his back and front without biting or freaking out. Does this sound normal for a new baby? Thanks for your help Fluffy
February 4, 200619 yr Yes, thats normal enough. He is probably very scared and confused and frightened. Deffintely cover him at night, and better still, move his cage into a quiet room where he can sleep undisturbed. He is just a little aby, and he really needs his peace and quiet and time to adjust, it will be a frightening set of changes for him. He sounds a little darling! If you are using a sand cover, be sure only to use it on one perch, and be sure also all other perches do not have sand covers on them. I personally hate sand covers, they can lead to bumble foot and other foot problems, they are too abrasive, and his little feet are just baby feet. Id taske that out, and get good quality pidicare type perches instead. Feathered Pets on here sells stuff like that, he would advise you well. Good luck with the little one! Anne
February 5, 200619 yr hi there! My baby budie did exactly the same thing when i got her a few weeks ago except she wouldn't even eat so consider yourself lucky! :oliveb: it took my bird about a week to fully come out of her shock and be herself but she became more active about 2-3 days on. just give him time and he'll be himself soon.
February 5, 200619 yr :oliveb: I may be extra vigilante but I have put water and seeds on the floor for just a bit until they become accustomed to the proper feeders. Sand perches do hurt their feet but it is okay on one of them. And do cover him but not a cover that has been with a scented fabric softener :greenb: Edited February 5, 200619 yr by Phoebe
February 5, 200619 yr :ausb: I still cover my birds and Apple must be about 5 months old now.. I think ill be covering him at night right up untill he is a little old man :bluebudgie:
February 5, 200619 yr I kept pretty covered on all 3 sides for a week and then slowly took off the cover throughout the week. It worked well , he felt safe during the day. At night I still cover him he sees his cover and he jumps up on his perch he sleeps on.
February 5, 200619 yr Thanks for all your help and advice its great to find somwhere i can ask questions Just a quick update: fluffy is now streching his wings and he chirped for the first time today. he has been back on the bottom of his cage and is eating the seed i put there. i will take the sand cover off as i dont want anything to happen to his little feet. At the moment he has plastic perches in his cage are these okay for him or do i need to get some natural ones for him? when i try try to stroke him now he seems a bit more wary of me and trys to get a way?!? do you think he was just frightend before and thats why he just sat there? how many times a day should i put my hand in his cage, and whats the best thing to do when my hands in there? I am a little bit paranoid at the moment as we had a little grey budgie called Bobby die a while ago from some sort of brain problem (woke up one morning and she was unable to walk and was twitching) so i want to make sure everything i do is the right thing!!!! Thank you all so much once again, i will try to get some photos of him up in the next few days
February 5, 200619 yr is your new baby in bobby's old cage? make sure there is no rust on it or that the plastic coating has not been chewed off the bars. seizures like that can sometimes be causes by metal poisoning, so just have a check over. the more variety of perches you can provide, the better. http://www.24parrot.com has loads of great stuff, you can pick up some of the perches cheaper from pets at home and stuff though, but i do use this site a lot. congratulations on your new little guy and welcome to the forums!
February 5, 200619 yr your new pet should have as many different perches as possible mine have natural, rope perches, normal wood perches from pet stores, plastic and cemant you do not have to have that many different ones but verying is good...most budgies seem tame at the begining becouse they are in shock now he is getting more alert just offer some millet spray in your hand and talk to him
