Posted January 27, 200619 yr What is your stand on nail trimming do you do it your self or do you go to the vet's? How often does it need to be done? And any other advice on this subject would be appreciated.
January 27, 200619 yr As long as you are very careful, I believe it can be done well at home. Always have a vet show you first. Take small bits off, rather than one large piece. A blood supply runs through the toenail, and cutting too much off will cause bleeding (really hard to stop too!). Always have some cornflour on hand to stop bleeding. If you don't feel confident then stop and get it done proffessionally
January 27, 200619 yr I used to do it myself but now that i'm older for some reason i'm too scared to do it, luckily i haven't needed to do it in ages. If your budgies have pink toes it's VERY easy because you can clearly see where the little blood veiny thing stops and becomes just nail. I wouldn't trust myself with budgies that have dark feet because it's harder to see.
January 27, 200619 yr Be very careful. If you have the right perches you don't need to worry about the nails. There is blood vessels in the nails and if you cut one too short it will bleed. Loss of blood is not good for the budgies.
January 27, 200619 yr My husband helps me, I think if you have had some experience in cutting nails on cats or dogs it is fairly simple. BUT if you don't feel comfortable about it, definitely just let the vet do it . It is just like your nail, never cut the pink or too close. Edited January 27, 200619 yr by lovey
January 28, 200619 yr What perches are the right type of perch to keep nails down? i've done both boys nails, just the tinyest bit tho. they didnt need much done. I used to have rats, and did there little toesies. : )
January 29, 200619 yr There are various pedicure perches out there made from different materials. Sand covers don't tend to work and may cause issues with sore feet.
