Posted January 25, 200619 yr Hello Im new to this forum and Im suprice to find a good forum with a lot of info. My question is, is it possible and safe to make nest boxes for parakeets out of plexiglass, I have a lot of extra plexiglass in my house. Im planning to drill holes in the side for air ventilation. the plexiglass is not transparent it is an opaque dark color. Im just consern if it is safe for the birds and their babies? Please help.
January 26, 200619 yr interesting idea. As long as it's dark like a normal box made from ply would i['m sure the birds would use it, I would only worry about if they could chew it at all. And how would you put the peices together? With some sort of glue? you would need to be sure it was safe with birds and to be extra safe not inside the box where they can chew at it. The other thing would be plexiglass would be slippery to them. Splayed legs might a a worry then in the bubs.
January 26, 200619 yr I will be using a non toxic glue that is powerful enough to stay together. Could the plexiglass be toxic? or another way I could put it together is with small screws . That wont rust. What are bubs? I imagagine that you mean baby budgies. I would use a concave insert with wood shavings at the botom to avoid splayed leggs. I have two kinds of plexiglass I have one that is clear and totally see through and I have a dark one. Why can't I use the clear see through to monitor the chicks better.
January 26, 200619 yr You'll scare Mum with clear glass. Think about how they breed in the wild. They use a tree stump so they are nice and enclosed. A lot of hens will remove any nesting material that you use, so that isn't a solution that will work
January 27, 200619 yr Just so you are sure that the budgies are comfortable, why not use plexiglass walls with a wooden bottom. I think the screws might be a better idea than the glue too. As for the clear plexiglass, I have seen clear nest box walls at the Royal Adelaide Show, but they might have been just for display purposes, so people could see the chicks without opening the box all the time.
January 27, 200619 yr My breeding cage has 2 covers to the breeding box. The first is plexiglass, and then there is a plywood one. I can take off the plywood one and have a look, and then put it back, the chicks can't get out, I can have a look, and the plywood gives the birds the privacy they need
January 27, 200619 yr Lin, you may remember, I do not remember who posted it and I am sure it is in the breeding section but she had a clear nesting box, and they had 1 baby. Not sure if she has posted in a while, this about about 3 weeks ago.
January 27, 200619 yr No, I don't remember that. Wonder if that was when my computer was playing up, and I missed a lot of posts? I'll try and take pictures of my breeding box. I don't know how clear this is, but there is plexi glass, and then the wood in front. You slide the wood up, so you can see through the plexi glass. The birds get their privacy, but I can check on the babies with a minimum of disturbance. Edited January 27, 200619 yr by Lin
January 31, 200619 yr I looked back and found this link of little Paco and the other budgies with their clear nesting box.. just thought id post the link to show you, just scroll down the page a little bit. http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index.php?showtopic=7146 I thought it was pretty nifty that you could see into the box, i think thats why i remembered the post. Welcome to the forum.. Cheers  Una
January 31, 200619 yr I have the same nest box. Its black, with two 'doors' the panels that slide out. The first one is dark, and the second is clear. So they must have removed it so they could get a candid. Its plastic, and very hard. My females have soo far only chewed like the tiniest slivers out of the whole part, unnoticable though...and ive had 4 clutches in is, still perfect and working great, unlike wooden ones that wear down afetr time. I have a question?!? I have 2 females and two males. I want to breed my yellow faced blue with my recessive white pied female in spring. As of now, the two males are flirting to oneanother, and are showing no intrest in the females whos ready for babies (VERY DARK CERE!!!) Im going to build an indoor aviary for my room in summer, so should i only put the two i want to breed in the aviary for the first couple months with a nestbox so they bond, and hopefully breed???...or should i make wooden breeding boxes???..PLEASE REPLY!!!..(Laughing out loud) Kirby
