Posted January 25, 200619 yr Hi- I have 2 male budgies (the last one we got a year ago, thinking it was a girl!). This morning the newer one looks quite 'glum'- he has fallen off his perch a couple of times, and looks lethargic. He also looks bloated. I made up some honey water and he has drunk a bit, haven't seen him eat. The other one is in fine spirits, chatting away to the sick one and scracthing him etc. Any ideas?
January 26, 200619 yr I'm new to budgies, but that doesn't sound very good. I would take that budgie to a vet asap. I hope that it is just a passing thing and that the budgie will be okay. Keep us posted.
January 26, 200619 yr This is not normal, I would separate your 2 birds in case he is sick the other ones does not get sick as well if you can. Let me ask you have you feed him anything different over the last couple days? Has he been exposed to any other bird? Also what does his dropping look like? I would call an Avian Vet ASAP, and get him in. When budgies get sick they can go down hill fast. I don't want to panic you but to make sure you know how serious it can be. Also go to Terri's site, http://budgietalk.com/ click on Health on the side, scroll down and it goes over what you can do at home until you can get him to the vet. Keep us updated...and I am sure you will get more advice from more experience members here.

They haven't had anything different, sometimes I give them grass or my parsley- but the other bird looks fine. I haven't noticed his droppings, I think he may be clogged up? Anything to do for a bird that can't poo? It's a public holiday here today so I am sure no vets would be open. I'll try to keep him quiet and the water intake up. Thanks, will keep you all posted. :budgiedance:
January 26, 200619 yr That sounds really awful, and serious. If you really can't get him to a vet today, put him in a seperate cage, and keep him warm. You can pop the cage near a lamp, and turn it on. Take away all the perches, and pop some food and water on the floor of the cage for him, Have you got some egg and biscuit mix? That's nice and easy for them to digest, so if you can put a shallow dish of that in. Keep an eye on him, and let us know about whether he eats and drinks or not. And as soon as he does a poop, check it out. It sounds to me like he might have been sick for a while, budgies hide their illnesses really well, and only show signs when it is quite severe. he needs to go to an avian vet as soon as you can. You also need to let your vet know that he has been in contact with another bird - most illnesses are highly contagious, and your other bird will need to be treated. Keep on the board today, and we will try to help you as much as possible
January 26, 200619 yr Keep him warm and isolated and get him to the vet yesterday. Your bird could very well be dying, this is most definitely an emergency. He's very very sick. He looks "bloated" because he's cold and fluffing up to try and keep warm. Please please get him to a vet now.
January 26, 200619 yr He definitely needs medical attention, have begged time off at work before to take them in (and make up the time later). Good Luck! :budgiedance:

He is still pretty much in the same condition though- I have seperatd them. Larry has been drinking, I put some honey in with the water. It is a VERY hot day here today so no need to keep him warm but I am trying to keep him comfortable- no vets open today, will take him tomorrow. He has pooped, it is very watery with almost a greyish sloppy bits in it??! He is on the bottom of the cage with water and lettuce leaves. I will cover him tonight and hope for the best, then off to the vet tomorrow if all allows...... Thanks for your help everyone. I will keep you posted. Ps- Flloyd is a bit upset now his friend is gone too. :budgiedance:
January 26, 200619 yr Oh yes, those poops mean urgently to the vet. Don't give him lettuce - will only make the poops worse. Something easy for him, some millett? That should tempt him to eat. I suggest you take the paper with his poops to the vet with you. It will show what they are like, and how much he's been pooping. Good luck!
January 27, 200619 yr keep us updated....I pray he will be okay until tomorrow. Hi Guys/Gals & Birdies! Larry is still alive- yay! He even stayed on his perch all night- but is again on the bottom, but eating and drinking. He is going to the vet later- let you know what comes of our visit. Thanks for your well wishes and support. Edited January 27, 200619 yr by gretskibb
January 27, 200619 yr I hope something can be done for him. He sounds like a real fighter to still be going.
January 27, 200619 yr I hope something can be done for him. He sounds like a real fighter to still be going. I think he is definately a fighter- as I got home today and he was great! Although a little 'glum' but certainly no worse, and much chirpier! We went to the vet still and he was happy with the way he looked and told me just to keep an eye on him. He's eating and drinking and chirping, minimal but enough to make me think he'll be okay He's still seperate and I will keep a close eye on him- no idea what the prob was though.... a mystery still. but I am glad he is better. January 27, 200619 yr Was the vet an aviarian or just the run of the mil vet? Oh and welcome to the forum. Now the bad news. Keep an eye on your first bird. It sounded like you did quarentine them when you first got him. This means that he could have past on to your other bird what he now has. I hope all goes well for you. If the vet you saw wasn't an avian, I would try to fnd one quick.
January 27, 200619 yr I agree with Daz...birds just don't get sick unless there is an underlying reason. Not to be an alarmest but they are really fragile beings.
January 30, 200619 yr welcome to the forum gretskibb. Hope your budgie recovers soon. Hi and thanks. Larry keeps getting better, I will leave him by himself for a cuple more weeks to be sure, but he looks much better. Thanks
