My Budgie Goes For My Lips And Eye Lids

Hi, I think this is my first post although I have been watching this site for a while. I got my boy budgie back on November, he is about 12 weeks old now, i have had him since he was about 5 weeks.

At the begining it took him about 2 weeks to calm down and at the end 4 weeks, he actually wanted to be with me, he would squack or fly onto the door so I would let him out and on my shoulder.

One day he loved me, the next I took him to Christmas with us at my in-laws for two days and after that it was like he totally forgot who i was and didnt' want to be with me.

Now he is getting better, still acts like he forgot how to "step up" but at least he seems to kinda like me again. But most often when he is on my finger he tries to get to my face, sometimes he even seems frantic to get to it and then he will nibble and/or bite my lips or eyelids like it's his favorite thing besides his bell.

It hurts! Is this a sign of affection, revenge, play??

Oh, also, I think he is a boy, but his cere is more purple then anything, I can't post a photo, but he is 12 weeks old and a cobalt spangle if that helps? Is he too young to have that bright blue cere color?

Thanks for whatever insight ya'll can give.

He is being a baby budgie. Welcome to your training. If it was your fingure we would suggest you let him bit, but not the tender areas. Don't worry he is about 3 months old and will go through his feral state in about a month. That is the time that you want to ring his neck..... :budgiedance: . Just remember the butterfly. Let him has his fun but when he comes to you, speak quietly and asure him him that you love him. Don't force youself on him but be around and speak to him. He will come around. :ausb:

Welcome to our forum :D We love pictures so if you have the ability would love to see your baby.

It is to young to tell for sure. Sounds like a boy to me, at 6 months it should be fully blue if a boy. Is his cere more purply pink or off-white?

As was mentioned, if he is going through his "adolescent" period, it will pass with time and patience. As long as you ignore the bites, this won't develop into an actual behavioral problem. If you react to the bites in any way, he will learn that he can get what he wants just by biting you. Budgie bites can be painful so if you don't think you can handle the bites right now, work on him stepping up while you wear gloves or have him step up onto a perch instead.

If you think he may be biting for other reasons, you'll have to figure out why before figuring how to deal with it. In ANY case, you'll have to ignore the bites but there are other steps to take depending on the reason for biting. Here is a bit from my behavior page on biting: http://budgietalk.com/behaviors.html#biting

Until this calms down, keep your budgie away from your face. He may just enjoy nibbling there; one of mine loves ear lobes and even though it's painful to me, she really means no harm. I just have to try and keep her away from ears! :D
