Hello Everyone,

I am a 26 yr old, 5 month pregnant, married female (clearly) from Calgary, Ab, Canada...

I just purchased my first budgie in oh 20 years (my mom had them when I was a kid). It's name is Shadow and I'm kind of hoping it is a male.... Pics to come shortly...

Currently I am trying to tame my bird but Shadow prefers to run around the cage whenever I put my hand in.... Shadow is a huge Broadway fan and particularly loves the song Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life from Monty Pythons Spamalot....

hello i also have a lovely bird called shadow this is him under the xmas tree! :hap: hes very tame and can talk youlle find lots of good help here it rocks B)

Welcome to our forums!! Congrats on your baby and your budgie. You will find a lot of information on taming here, it is very normal for your budgie in the beginning to run around. Try just placing your hand by the cage and then in the cage without trying to have him on your finger. It is a slow process for some others tame easier but either way it is very rewarding!

Welcome and congratulations on the new addition to the family (as well as the pending one :ausb:). I'd love to see pictures of your budgie.

As far as taming goes, you might be able to get some ideas from my taming page here: http://budgietalk.com/taming.html I'm going to overhaul that section soon but you can get a grasp of the basics there. :ausb: And of course, there are tons of people here to answer all your questions.

Have fun!

Thanks everyone :ausb:

I am not trying to get him to perch on my finger yet just keeping my hand in the cage for now...

Hello Everyone,

Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life from Monty Pythons Spamalot....

Hi Divinerite I love your username but it would be more for the budgie's temerment then yours. Budgies believe that they rule the world and that we are their slaves.. :ausb:

Oh and the song came from the Life of Brian...I'm and big fan on monty python.......

Welcome and Please enjoy the forum

Oh and be very wary of Lin and Bea and others, they can lead you astray. :ausb:

It's the Broadway version of the song :ausb:

Shadow adores it, I play it and Shadow starts to dance and chirp.....

Hi and welcome! We adore photos, so please post some of your little feathered one. Oooh, a baby! I can't wait for you to have the baby, and I hope we get lots of pictures of him/her when they arrive. As you will have already noticed, Daz is a bit delusional :ausb:

Welcome! I'm sure you'll find lots of useful information here. I have already!

:P Hello Shadow and Divine (from your next door neighbour in BC). :ausb:

Thanks for the welcome. I've had Shadow for 2 weeks now and I expected him to be somewhat calmer around me by now. I spend a good part of the day just talking to Shadow but yeah even if I just go into the cage to change food or water my bird freaks and runs around.... *sigh* :fear

Hello and welcome to the forums from me and my little flock. I can't wait for pictures either. :fear

Two weeks really isn't all that long, so I'm sure your new friend is still settling in. :fear Just be patient - sometimes it takes months. So enjoy, look through the forums, and ask questions if you can't find what you're looking for.

Congratulations on your pending addition too!

dont give up just keep doing it and close your eyes sometimes when you talk to him so he sees your not a preditor!

Welcome to the forums

I just got a new budgie recently and he took a little while to calm down, but now he's fine and has just moved in with his mates

Now he at least sits on his perch when I'm in there but if I move at all he jumps off onto the ground...

Make sure all your movements are smooth and quiet. If you're tense, your budgie will likely pick up on it. Don't stare at him in the eye and if you do make eye contact, try and do it from the corner of your eye and blink a bit. I know it sounds insane, but your challenge right now is to make your budgie believe you're not a predator. Think like a bird. :P And be gentle and quiet in everything you do. Take it slow, he'll come around.

I know  I read a whole lot on here before I posted. My husband thinks I'm a nut cuz he sees me looking at the bird sideways, closing my eyes, and bobbing my head while talking to it (Laughing out loud)....

:(Laughing out loud):!!!

Welcome to the forum! It sounds like you are doing well taming-wise. Sometimes it seems like they'll never get tame, but they do. It takes a lot of patience to avoid rushing things, which of course just makes them more nervous. You are doing the right thing, so just keep it up!

Goodluck, and I look forward to seeing pictures :)

I know :) I read a whole lot on here before I posted. My husband thinks I'm a nut cuz he sees me looking at the bird sideways, closing my eyes, and bobbing my head while talking to it lol....

Just wait...soon he will be doing the same thing when he thinks you are not looking...... :D :hap: :D

(Laughing out loud) i do that but the budgies seem to lok at me with great superstition when i do this i need some work on the budgie talk (Laughing out loud) divine you seem to be doing everything write itlle come slowly

  • 5 months later...
