Posted January 14, 200619 yr I had my cousin over with her 3 children, and Pretty out too so they could see him (adult supervised . Well the 5 yr old, and the 3 yrs old were very content on looking at him but the 20 month year old :fear Pretty was in his cage sitting on his perch with the door open and I was standing next to 20 month year old. He was so quick he just reached in and literally plucked him off the perch. Pretty of course squealed, I went OMG :fear: ...and open those little hands as fast as I could. Thank goodness we were supervising but I figured Pretty would get timid and hop off to the higher branch in the back (he did it prior to this encounter). Can you imagine what would have happened if we were not there Now, I know I have a very docile bird, who is NOT scared of even a 20 month year old, ALWAYS supervise. I knew that before but certainly learned a lesson about my little budgie he is WAY too trusting. Edited January 14, 200619 yr by lovey
January 14, 200619 yr :fear Good Pretty made out okay, I refuse to let any kids under 6 to be around my birds with the doors open. When I had my Yorkie (for 15 years), I just turned my head for a second and a 3 year old picked him up by his head, good he wasn't a biter, same for birds but they aren't that tough, they are so fragile. :fear
January 14, 200619 yr Yeah, my neice (1 and 1/2) is not afraid fo the birds at all. She's not allowed in their room unless they're caged and even then I don't let her touch the cages. Not only would Piper not fly away, she'd fly right to my neice if I let her. Mr. Molly's done it once when I took him downstairs and thankfully Kayla (neice) didn't move until I got him off of her. Then she started wailing because she wanted him to perch on her again. :fear So glad Pretty is okay! Those types of things can be so scary.
January 14, 200619 yr It's amazing how quick kids can be sometimes isn't it? How lucky you were that quick, if that little one had just squeezed a bit harder... Run out and buy a lottery ticket
January 14, 200619 yr I'm glad you were there to "save" Pretty. Things like that happen so quickly.. I've had "bird emergencies" a couple of times. Very scary.. I'll definately take extra precautions if I have any small children over.
January 14, 200619 yr Author I have learned, the cage is CLOSED when kids are over that are not mine. The older kids are more frightful I noticed of getting bit (which he doesn't do) but they don't know that but the little ones I see have NO fear.
January 14, 200619 yr Just a word of warning there. Consider a lock when kids are around. I don't know how many times other peoples kids have thought it is okay to open a cage in my house. Even worse is the aviary. I now padlock all cages when my little one has friends over.
