Jim is having his first moult, feathers all over and spikes on his forehead!!

just wondered aprox what age this would make him in your opinion?

also what are the spikes, new feathers i told the wife,am i right?

yes they are new feathers growing and the other question i could not answer sorry!

when a new freather grows it is covered with a layer of keratin (same stuff as makes our hair and nails). the keratin protects the new feather as it is developing. :D

budgies usually have their first moult at 3 months of age.

Another name for the spikes is 'pin feathers'. During a molt, a bird often appreciates a gentle mistin of warm water with a small amount of pure aloe vera liquid mixed in. This is very soothing for the skin as molting can cause some itching and irritation as the pin feathers break through the skin.

I'm pretty sure that mine have been older than 3 months for their first moult.. I'm not sure exactly how old they were though.

3 months is just an average :fear
