Posted December 19, 200519 yr We painted the main floor of our home last night and we put Sunny Boy in the basement. I am wondering when it would be safe to bring him back upstairs. We used water based paint and you can still smell it a bit. Should we wait until the smell goes away totally or is it safe for him now that the paint is dry? We keep going down to talk to him and I have left the tv on for him but he seems soo lonely down there as we spend most of our time upstairs.
December 19, 200519 yr Not sure on this one but I am bumping up to the top since no one responded yet
December 19, 200519 yr I brought him back up this morning. I came down and the smell of the paint is still very faint but It will probably be that way for a while because it is new paint. I am going to keep my eye on Sunny Boy all day though just to make sure he is okay. Thanks for the bump lovey, if someone can still answer the question that would be great because I know there are some people that don't realize that paint fumes can harm a bird... (paint store lady who killed her two cockatiels by putting them up on top of her fridge while painting her home) Paint fumes rise and also she used Oil Based paint which is more toxic, and unfortunately both birds died.
December 19, 200519 yr I'd say it would be best to wait until the fumes clear completely (at least enough so that you can no longer smell them). Since birds are so much more sensitive than we are, I'd worry of even the slight bit of smell bothering their respiratory system. Maybe open up the windows in their room for a while (when they're not in it, I mean) to give it a good chance to air out.
January 16, 200619 yr when we did painting here, we moved chuckie and fred out of the room for the day but while we were painting, we had all the doors and windows open for ventillation, that way that fume go faster. afterwards we used a small portable fan and put it in the door way to another room, so the back was facing the room we painted and the actual fan part was in another room. that way it sucked out the air from the room we painted in order to have the whole fan flow going. that way we could move chuck and fred back in without the fumes being there.... i hope that helps.. and made sence
January 23, 200619 yr Sunny Boy is fine. I won't be painting again until the spring so this time we can keep windows and doors open to air things out quicker.
