Posted December 17, 200519 yr I've been trying to figure out what native plants my budgie would enjoy. So far the ones she has rejected are 3 different types of gum tree, she has liked wild grass seeds and i'm waiting for her verdict on the Gravilia flower. What i was wondering was, what are the plants the wild budgies eat? The only answer I've found on sites is Eucalyptus which is fairly obvious as Budgies come from Australia. Does anyone know what plants they eat? Thanks Emma
December 17, 200519 yr Mine adore grevillea branches, they eat the leaves and tear the bark off. YUM! They will also roll around in gum leaves - natural insecticide there - try spraying them with water and popping them in. Umm, yeh any natural ones. But budgies are naturally cautious, so you will have to keep offering. Soon it will get to the stage like my aviary birds - as soon as they hear the door in the morning they all line up on the wire waiting to see what I provide them with today
December 17, 200519 yr Hehe I put the gum tree branches in a corner of her cage so they look liek they 'sprout' from the cage. Next to them above a perch I put teh grevillea flower where she could reach it. She's now swinging in the breeze hanging from the gum tree branches while completely and utterly destroying the grevillea flower (Laughing out loud). Emma
December 17, 200519 yr sounds like she is having a wonderful time I love watching mine when I put in some leaves to rip and chrew and shed and bath in and fight over...such crazy antics. Edited December 17, 200519 yr by Nerwen
December 17, 200519 yr Mine love bottle brush ....it may be a budgie aphrodesiac....some of the young birds um.....try to get fresh with them
May 1, 200619 yr My babys also go crazy for bottle brush, I have an inch wide polly pipe stuck in the ground which I place the branches into and "Hey Presto" a bottle brush tree for them to perch in and nibble on.
May 4, 200619 yr i switch off with bottle brush, pampus grasses, and hybiscus. They distroy all i put in so i have to change them often! i have a gum tree too, so when I can, I cut of a branch and hang it for them!
May 5, 200619 yr are rubber trees (Ficus elastica) really safe? I've always read that if anything ingests the sap they will become sickly and possible die? I've also heard willow is toxic?? both are listed as safe here http://www.mdvaden.com/bird_page.shtml
May 5, 200619 yr i've heard of the ficus as a weeping fig & also a rubber tree, and each time i hear different as to whether they are safe or not, so i keep away from them in the aviary. i have one in the house & coco always used to perch on it, but never ate any of the leaves.
May 5, 200619 yr I'm not sure if there's a different between willow and weeping willows. But apparently the weeping willows act like a sort of 'pain relief' for birds.
May 7, 200619 yr My Budgies all love the Maleleuca Bush, leaves and branches. Even the Mumma birds will leave their eggs and baby chicks when they I put it in the breeding cages. (I'm sure they smell it coming) My untamed aviary birds will actually come and take it from my hands, but that is all they will come near me for. Even my little babies eat it. Cindy
