Don't Fall Asleep

I can't remember if this has been covered here or not but I looked through the posts and didn't find it. So I want to quickly point out that it is not ever a good idea to fall asleep with your budgie out of its cage. You wouldn't believe how often budgies (and other pet birds) are crushed this way. I've heard stories of people who fell asleep cuddling their bird and ended up rolling over on top of it. :) Birds are so light, it's so easy to "forget" they're there while you're sleeping. It's hard to feel where they are on your body.

Not to mention, if your bird is out of its cage and you're asleep, he isn't being supervised. So, please don't let your budgie sleep with you and if you're tired and think there is a chance you'll fall asleep, keep him/her in his/her cage until you're wide awake and alert.

And I just realized Bea's already posted this. My eyes must be failing me. :D Feel free to delete! :D

thank you to bringing that to peoples attention for it is a easy mistake to do

The point can stand repeating. I've never fallen asleep with a birdy, but let it stand as a warning!

Yeah, it's a bad idea to fall asleep with a budgie around especially if you roll around a lot like me! I've done it a few times with Blinkie but thank god dad's been around to wake me up.

Back in '97 I had heart surgery, I couldn't wait to get out of hospital because I knew snowy was home waiting for me :P

I was sleeping alot in those first few days after getting home & quite a few times I'd wake up to find her just sat there on me, sleeping. Bear in mind I was very sore, rolling onto my side at that time took me ages to do as it hurt alot!

Still, I can't say I realised the dangers at all until I found this thread just now, & I've kept budgies for over 15 years :(

For the most part my apt is bird safe. If they are on top of their cage when let out in my place, they are fine. I napped a bit one afternoon and they were both still there. I never "cuddle" with mine. They have each other to cuddle. I just let them sit on my hand and chatter, fluff themselves up, etc. :)
