My Budgie Does Not Particularly Like Millet! Is He The Only One?

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

My budgie, mostly, ignores millet and I am told that all budgies CRAVE millet! I just wondered if he is the only one? I first offered him English Millet. He turned his nose up to that so I er....... ordered some American Millet from Virginia (hands up, I spoil him rotten) which he deigned to sample. He ate a couple of the seeds and then left it. I am now feeding the wild birds some very expensive (postage was dreadfully expensive) Virginian Millet which they, at least, are eating. I have got to stop spoiling this bird.

I have to say that when I first got Winkie, she would turn her little beak up at millett. I think she thought it was deadly poisonous :) She now eats it, and enjoys it, but I have seen her eat from her seed dish in preference to the millet. So, I suppose some birds just aren't fussed on it. A bit like people who don't like sweet things. :P

Hello Lin,

Thanks for the reply. I suppose you are right about tastes - even birds probably have their likes and dislikes. I just wondered if Luke was the only budgie who wasn't that interested in millet. They always suggest using millet for taming but the only thing Luke won't be separated from is his Trill.

Yes, if they don't like millet, training is near impossible! Hence the fact that Winkie is not tame :dbb1: I have yet to find a food that Winkie adores. I've tried everything on her, and she just turns her little beak up at it. The day I bought her, her face was bright yellow from eating corn! Do you think she has ever touched corn since I've had her? No, of course not! Good luck finding a favoured food! Try some thistle, grass, or dandelion from your garden, make sure it hasn't been sprayed. My aviary birds would do cartwheels for the stuff!

Ash didn't like Millet until he was put in the aviary with the others. He saw them eating it and now he eats it.

I know there are folk on here whose budgies don't like millet but personally I don't believe them!!! (joking!) :dbb1:

Mine would kill for it.

Thanks for the replies, guys. At least Luke isn't that unusual in not liking millet. Lin, I am going to try Luke on some dandelion and thistle and see if he turns his little beak up at them!

If Luke loves his Trill then he loves millet. The main seeds in Trill are different types of millet so i expect that he's just a bit confused by the apperance of a millet spray. :P

I know there are folk on here whose budgies don't like millet but personally I don't believe them!!! (joking!)

Mine would kill for it.

Ditto for mine, Julie. It's even gotten Skittles (who pretends to be deathly afraid of hands) to sit on my palm to eat it. :) All I have to do is ask them if they want a treat - they get all excited about it and know what a "treat" is. A few have started flying to me from halfway across the room when they see I've got millet in my hand.

Vonn, it might just take awhile for your bird to get used to it. If you clip it to the side of the cage, or feed it from your hand, try cutting a small 1" - 2" section off and offering it that way. Some birds get rattled at eating something much bigger than they are.

Hi Rainbow

I think you have solved the problem for me! He probably IS scared of the size as he is such a nervous little bird. I will give him a small piece and see what happens. Thanks for that!

I get so envious when I read about birds sitting on your hands - how I WISH Luke would learn to trust me quicker. He lets me get right up to him as long as it is only my face and no hand is in sight. It's so sweet, he will listen intently to whatever I am saying and answer back when I stop talking to him. And this is with my nose almost touching his beak. Yet he won't trust my hand near him. I know, I just have to be patient.

Thanks again, Rainbow.

Vonn, did it work?

I think you have gotten further with your bird than you think you have. :D Allowing you to get right up next to him with your face is huge, because since we have our eyes in front of our heads, that labels us as predators to the animal world. He's not too afraid you will eat him anymore, LOL.

Hi Rainbow

I gave him a small sprig of millet but so far he hasn't gone near it so perhaps the sprig was still too big and scary for him. I think I will take a few seeds off and put them with his Trill and see if he eats them then!

I am so encouraged by what you said about Luke allowing me to get my face so close. I didn't realise that was an achievement. |He really enjoys it when I chat to him close up and settles himself down just like he does when he is getting ready for a nap, all cute and cuddly.

I really feel my avian vet unwittingly caused the fear of hands and the dark as I mentioned in my post. I will just perserve with trying to get him to trust my hands. He is such a darling little bird and gives us so much pleasure. He has decided that rap music is the greatest - gets very excited when he hears it - and sings along happily whenever it is playing!

Tried to reply earlier but the site was down. I will let you know if I succeed in getting him to like millet.

Hi Rainbow

Just thought I would let you know that Luke picks out the millet seeds I put in his seed bowl and throws them on the floor!! He must be a freak...(Laughing out loud)

LOL, you made me laugh with the way you phrased that. I'll bet that is funny, seeing him go through his food and chucking out the millet. Oh well, maybe he will like it eventually. -_- Have you tried clipping a piece to the side of his cage near the perch he likes to sit on?
