Posted November 23, 200519 yr We have several different types of water containers in our avery, (All self filling types,) and whilst i clean them out regularly I have an ongoing problem with algie growing in them, I was wondering if I gave them a good clean once a week with bleach would this help inhibit the algie and would it be safe for the birds?
November 23, 200519 yr If they are plastic then no, the bleach will get into the plastic, you will never be able to rinse the bleach out. Try crushing some egg shells, not too finely, put them in the bottles with some water and shake, this will get the mould off the sides! Do it once a week and you shouldn't have a buildup. If the bottles are glass, then I would use vinegar as being safer than bleach.
November 23, 200519 yr thanks for the info on the plastic (Yes some are plastic, rice works well too, (Uncooked) however my theroy is That I always miss some and then it breeds quicker. I'll have to think about this.
November 23, 200519 yr Definitely vinegar and NOT bleach and even after that scrub and rinse like mad! (don't even get me started with what happened with my fish tank and bleach!!) better bleach be kept to clothing and floors and toilets and...........but not animal cages. :ausb:
November 23, 200519 yr Have you got one of those baby bottle brushers to scrub out with? And try and keep the water out of the sunshine.
November 23, 200519 yr I wouldn't use bleach..the algae is way less harmful for them than bleach... :parrot: OMG...bleach and a fish tank
November 23, 200519 yr you can use a weak bleach solution to clean the cage if one bird dies, aswell as using a veterinary disinfectant. but i use avian disinfectant to clean out the food and water dishes and toys once a week.
