Posted November 20, 200519 yr please help me,i noticed that one of my budgie jims nails is hanging off,its his main front claw?? he is pecking away at it and there is a small ammount of blood there, what should i do?there are no vets around here for birds
November 20, 200519 yr When you say hanging off do you mean a small amount or all the way back to the foot. Also is there much blood. A picture would be helpful but only if there isn't a lot of blood coming out.
November 20, 200519 yr :hap: I don't know if you should clip it off or what (will leave that to the experts) but you should try and stop the bleeding with some cornstarch or a stipec pen.
November 20, 200519 yr Author the nail is hanging right back to where it starts growing from, there isnt much blood but it is bothering him,i cant get a good close up either but will keep trying
November 20, 200519 yr These things always happen on a day when there isn't a vet around. Â Budgies have viens which run down the claws. If it was at the end of the nail then it wouldn't really be a problem as you could sort out yourself. Â I've had a look at your picture http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....wtopic=6891&hl= the one where he's near your mouth. On his right foot is that the claw which has the poorly nail? I can see a little redness.
November 20, 200519 yr Yes definately cornflour or even ordinary flour if you haven't got any.Probably will need a vets attention or it might snag on things. Hopefully it may just drop off but watch for more blood loss.
November 20, 200519 yr Author ohh im really worried now,his claw has been at an angle since i got him but i didnt think it would harm him,but now today its as if he wants it off,ill have to try the vets tomorrow.Just had a good look and there is hardly no blood
November 20, 200519 yr It probably will need a vets attention as Julie said, the main concern is blood loss though so try not to disturb the nail to much. A vet will be able to clip the nail then put something on it to stop it bleeding to much. The nail will re-grow back so that isn't an issue. It will bother Jim for a few weeks though.  Here's some links to Avian vets http://www.parrotpassionsuk.com/Advice/Uk_Avian_Vets.htm http://www.birdcareco.com/English/Avian_vets/avian_vets.html http://www.theparrotsocietyuk.org/avian-vets.shtml  Have you tried him in a bath yet as once his nail has been seen to, this could aid the healing.  I would probably cover him early tonight so that he goes to bed early and doesn't jump around much and keep an eye on him every once in a while to check blood loss etc. Then in the morning I'd go over to an avian vet to have the nail clipped and sorted out.  Just seen your post so good news about there not being much blood. November 20, 200519 yr Author oh no hes not very well now,hes sitting on his perch with his head tucked away..
November 20, 200519 yr If it's always been like that, it sounds like an old injury he has re-opened somehow. I agree if you can dip him in some warm water to allow the blood to be cleaned off you can get a bettter idea of what's going on with his nail. I don't think I'd clip it at the foot - I'd let your vet do that so when it bleeds the vet will be able to take care of it. I think it would bleed quite a bit, being taken off right at the toe. Flour is good to use in a pinch for you to stop the bleeding though. Can you clean it up now? Edited November 20, 200519 yr by Rainbow
November 20, 200519 yr Regarding him having his head tucked under his wing, that's a normal behaviour, so don't get worried about that. The only concern would be if there is lots of blood loss and there isn't. So a vet in the morning will sort him out, just keep an eye on him.
November 20, 200519 yr just be careful that he does not lose to much blood and call the vet as soon as you can.birds have very little blood  **edit for shortcuts** Edited November 20, 200519 yr by Rainbow
November 20, 200519 yr Author an update,i have contacted a few people and they say the vet in our town wouldnt see a bird!!!! taken a look now and its really sore with him,he wont stand on it,ohh i dont want to lose this bird also noticed the nail is all white, not pink like the other nails? November 20, 200519 yr dont panic welshman, its quite common for birds to lose entire toenails i believe. casper came to me with one of his back toenails competely gone - it had been plucked out by his mother in the nestbox. as long as it isnt bleeding then it should be okay until the morning. just keep close observation and some flour handy to stem any new bleeds. Â this is a list of vets in wales that see avian patients, does that help at all? if not i will keep trying. he will definitely need to have some medication to stop infection in his toe when the nail does come off. try to keep him as calm as possible in a quiet place so he is less likely to knock it again and cause him to bleed again. November 20, 200519 yr Author thanks, the hwest one is around 40 miles from me and the other is 100 mile,i am going to go into the vets in the morning and plead with them to help.
November 20, 200519 yr Regarding the change in colour in the nail, this could be a good this as it would indicate that the blood has stopped flowing down it which means when it is clipped by the vet it won't bleed as much. Jim is a young bird so he will grow back a new nail in no time. Just keep an eye on him to make sure he isn't losing blood and find a compentant vet to help you out.
November 20, 200519 yr i think it depends whether the inside part of the nail has been damaged that will determine how long or if the nail will grow back. casper is nearly 1 and still doesnt have a back toenail yet. he does just fine without it though - doesnt affect him in the slightest bit  good luck welshman, i take my birdies to a dog and cat vet that is also good with birds - there are some people out there that can help.
November 20, 200519 yr Author i;ll let you all know how we get on.i'll be phoning in sick to work tomorrow!!!!priority and all that
November 21, 200519 yr Hope he's okay. A few of my budgies are missing toenails and even toes from fighting over breeding boxes and stuff. They're all perfectly happy.
November 21, 200519 yr Author heres my update....i phoned in sick this morning and got a telling off from the boss..who cares!! i went to the vets and they said to bring jim in straight away which i did,he enjoyed the car drive, chirping away, when the vet had a look she just nudged the nail slightly and it fell off,no blood.... she gave me a solution to bathe the end of his toe in and all is fine,im so relieved. a strnge thing then happened when i got jim home,he seems to be totally trusting of me now, even more than before? he jumped out of his cage and straight onto my head where he preened what hair i have!he then flew away but came back and hovered by my arm until i put my hand out for him to land on and hes been sitting on my shoulder ever since, maybe he realises i am here to help him. Thanks for everyones help here, much appreciated Adrian
November 21, 200519 yr Author ha ha it seems that way,im not being mad but he is still sitting with me.
November 21, 200519 yr I'm glad to hear that. I'm sure he knows you were trying to help him. He sounds really sweet.
