Posted November 17, 200519 yr Am i right in guessing that this is really bad scaly face? I noticed Tirikke like this today. I only noticed because she wasn't being her usual flighty self and was sitting still and i thought she was breathing funny. Obviously i noticed something was wrong with all the crustiness so i captured her to see if it was perhaps blocking her nostrils. Thankfully it isn't. She's in a small cage in my room at the moment and as soon as dad gets home we'll hopefully get her to the vet for some treatment. Her legs aren't scaly, i thought that both the legs and face got scaly with the scaly face mite? I'm also thankful that none of the other budgies seem to have any signs of it which i suppose is because she's a real loner who has no friends. Is there anything i can do for her until dad gets home? It looks really irritating. Edited November 17, 200519 yr by Bea
November 17, 200519 yr oh the poor little girl, yes I believe that is scaly face, and you don't have to have both areas affected just that both can.
November 17, 200519 yr Author I feel really bad that i didn't notice sooner. Hope it clears up fast once we get the treatment. How long does it usually take to clear up? Also, the way it looks like honeycomb, with all the little holes. Are they mite tunnels or something? if not, what are they?
November 17, 200519 yr the mite burrowing into the beak and surrounding areas so the tunnels you are seeing is the path the mite has taken. there was a pet shop once where i told them they had the start of some scaly face, I had to point out the three birds you could see it on, they only had a beak like hers nothing had yet gotten outside of the beak and I was told it was just wear and tear the lady didn't even catch one for a closer look. Wosh I had the nerve to cry out in a loud vioce about buying a sick bird Fingers crossed everthing goes well for her at the vets. Have you gone back out to double check all your birdies? November 17, 200519 yr YAY I swear if I found it on one of mine I would be there checking all of them over ten times Panicker that I am
November 18, 200519 yr Author Still waiting to go to the vets. We are going tomorrow cause dads working today. He ofcourse said can't we just get some of that stuff from the pet shop so i had to lecture him on pet shop products. He looked at Tirikke this morning and said "ergh!" so he can see the need to go. I'm just happy he agreed to take her, i was so scared he'd just say use the pet shop stuff.
November 18, 200519 yr YAY glad you got him to see your way of thinking. Let us know what the vet said to do.
November 18, 200519 yr Poor little Tirikke, any news on what vet said? Do you need to disinfect cages, feeders etc
November 18, 200519 yr get ivermectin from your vet bea and you will need to disinfect the whole aviary i would have thought.
November 19, 200519 yr Scaly Face Symptoms: beak deformity, encrustation of the cere, nasal obstruction, lameness of affected legs and feet Description: Scaly face/scaly leg disease starts from the beak and spreads to other areas of the head and body. Treatment: There are several methods for treating this disease. Dichlorvos pest strips placed around a cage are highly effective in mild cases. The pest strip should be out of the reach of the birds since they are toxic. Liquid paraffin, petroleum jelly, crotamiton, and mesulphan work well at penetrating and dispersing infected tissue when extensive lessions are present; repeated treatment may be required to rid the disease. Improving the diet with greens rich in vitamin A as well as vitamin and mineral supplements will help in treating the disease. Treatment should continue for three consecutive days and when necessary repeated in 1 week. Beak deformities must be trimmed frequently to allow the bird to eat. Aerosol treatment in the heavily feathered areas of the bird should be performed using a nebulizing apparatus and a mixture of 20 cc Domoso, 20 cc sterile water, 1 cc Tylan and 4 cc malathion (95% solution). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bea I use Scale Face from Aristopet. Got it at a pet shop. Did the trick with Huey. Edited November 19, 200519 yr by daz
November 19, 200519 yr Author Took Tirikke to the vets this morning. Got some ivermectin to put on the back of neck of ALL the aviary birds! :bluebudgie: Will take some time, i'm going to do that later when my friend comes over cause it's a 2 person job. The vet didn't say anything about disinfecting everything. Just said to treat them all now and again in a month. To all the Canberra members and everyone else here's a link to my vets page: www.canberravet.com.au. It's the best vet i've ever come across and they know so much about birds as well as a bazillion other animals. The site itself is really helpful with lots of info and stuff so i thought you'd like to check it out.
November 19, 200519 yr Hope all goes okay. I cleaned down my aviary last week with a disinfectant. I'll do it every 6 months.
November 20, 200519 yr Author It only took 5 mins to treat all my budgies. Not long at all! :oliveb: Only downside is i think it makes sense to keep the babies inside until i've done the second treatment which means bringing another cage into my bedroom! :bluebudgie:
November 20, 200519 yr Oh what an excuse...they will be so spoiled Wow that was fast cool. :bluebudgie:
November 20, 200519 yr Author Well they would be spoiled if they didn't hate me so much. Besides, they're going out to the aviary so not much point getting them used to hugs and kisses.
November 20, 200519 yr Well they would be spoiled if they didn't hate me so much. Besides, they're going out to the aviary so not much point getting them used to hugs and kisses. All budgies deserve hugs and kisses and good to hear the news
November 22, 200519 yr Author (Laughing out loud)! I would give them hugs and kisses if they would let me. They are psycho! They escape and go nuts in my room if i even try. Good news, Tirikke is looking a lot better. The crustiness around her face has lost the honey comb look. Hopefully it'll clear up completely soon.
November 22, 200519 yr Good news Bea, any chance of another photo to show the before and after effects of treatment. It could put other peoples minds at rest who have budgies that suffer from the disease and show that it is treatable.
