Posted November 14, 200519 yr I have a 6 day old chick that I pulled from the nest as a hatchling due to parental abuse. The male had killed the sibling.I caged the male and the female is now sucessfully rearing three chicks that have since hatched.I am hand feeding this 6 day old baby using a one cc syringe.I am feeding Hagens hand feeding formula.I am feeding him every two hours between 7 am and midnight.I also, feed him once at 3:30 am.According to package directions I should mix this feed 60c to 120cc of hot water. However ,I find this mixture is too thick for him to handle. So,I have been mixing 45cc in 120cc of water. This baby is growing. However, his siblings that are still with the mother are doing much better.I am thinking about mixing his feed with something besides water.I want to gain extra nutrition for him with out making the feed too thick.I was thinking about using ensure plus or maybe a baby formula like Carnation good start. Please don't advice me to change feeding products. The hagens is the only thing available here. Please advise. Our whole family ,including my three year old,is captivated by this tiny baby
November 14, 200519 yr Alberta, it sounds like you are coping supremely. The BEST advice I can give you is to ring your/ or ANY avian vet for telephone advice. The slightest mis-hap regarding mixing could kill this much loved little baby of yours. Most avian vets will give telephone advice in emergencies, which I would class this as. Let us know how things go! Anne
November 15, 200519 yr Have you thought about putting it back with it's mother to see if she will take it and feed it?? Good luck with it all.
November 15, 200519 yr If you do continue to hand feed it then you'll need to remember that there's no product around that can match what it's parents can give it and it will develop slower than the parent raised chicks. I would try Lady's suggestion, how long have you been hand rearing the chick?

I would try Lady's suggestion, how long have you been hand rearing the chick? I have thought about putting it back. But,I am afraid she would reject it and possibly kill or harm it.We have been hand feeding him since the day he hatched. We have bonded to him.My 3 yr old daughter sings him lullabyes and my husband calls home from work to see how much he is eating. So,you see we really can't take any chances with this little one.
November 18, 200519 yr I have been in the same situation. I would put the chick back and see what happens. I found once I had I good mother who had only hatched 1 chick and another mother who had 2 chicks but seemed to be losing interest in them. I put all 3 chicks together in the good mothers box. She came back in, did a head check, seemed alittle surprised and then just got on with the job of bringing up 3 chicks instead of one. If the mother doesn't accept junior then go back to hand rearing. I used Kaytee exact without problems when I was in that situation. Good Luck.

Thank you for the advise. But we are going to continue to hand rear him.He is 10 days old now and alot bigger and stronger.I changed to a 3cc syringe and now I am mixing the feed full strenght. He is growing like a little weed. His eyes are almost openand his little feathers are just starting to break through the skin.He can hold his head up and he looks just like a sweet wobbly little old man.As soon as he hears you he is begging and putting up such a racket you would swear he was being killed.Even when his crop is full he looks for attention. When you pick him up he snuggles into your hand and goes to sleep.Any way, that's it for now.Thank you again and I will keep you all posted on little Egbert!

December 3, 200519 yr Any suggestions on what when and how to introduce other foods would be great! Thanks a bunch from my little PJ(pride and joy)and me! :ygbudgie: Have you checked in the Food and Nutrition forum for ideas? There are a lot of suggestions in there, but a few I'll give are cooked diets, sprouted seeds, raw veggies, egg food, and a good pelleted diet in addittion to the seeds. I'd start introducing them right away. Congratulations! I can't wait for pics.
