Toe Gone

I just found one of the baby budgies (3-4 weeks old) on the floor of the avery with blood everywhere, the back toe is missing and bleeding. it still needs its parents doesn't it? what should I do? At the moment I picked it up, and put it in a small cage and put the cage in the avery so that its on a clean surface.

First and foremost he needs urgent veterinary treatment. You can not treat an injury as severe as this yourself, he has suffered an amputation. It would seem to me as though one of the parents has bitten his poor little toe off, mutilation of chicks by the parent happens. You may need to hand rear this little one, again, veterinary advice and guidance is vital. If hand rearing, the wrong consistencly, the wrong temperature, the wrong amount of formula can kill a young chick quickly and painfully. PLease, seek avian guidance as fast as you possibly can.

yes i agree with chirpy take it to the vet as soon as you can

First and foremost, I would stop the bleeding...The wound needs to be cleaned and the bleeding stopped. I know I'm a bit late seeing this post, but what did you end up doing? How is the baby?

Missing a toe shouldn't affect his quality of life later on, I had a budgie that had a toe bitten by my sun conure. It eventually turned black and fell off at the bite site as it was bitten badly enough to cause nerve damage and interrupt the blood flow. It never bled. She was fine.

Vet Time!

Me agrees!

Hope everything turns out okay. Let us know how it goes? The vet should be able to tell you how to feed the chick as well as take care of the wound.

I have a cockatiel who came to me missing a couple of toes (not completely, just the ends) and you can hardly tell.

I have one hen who lost all but one toe when i tried to colony breed and she is still just as cheeky and happy as all the other budgies.

How is the Baby today?

Did you get to the Vet?

Cindy

Yesterday, I would have said, he's fine, dad was feeding/sitting with him (I put him back in the box) the next day he was flying around the avery (Only the tip of the toe was gone, bleeding stopped very very quickly) however today I'm sorry to ssay I found him on the floor, he's definately been atacked today fresh blood) he's been taken out of the cage and I'm uncertain what to do with him. (We've had a bit of trauma here this last few weeks I've been ill (Medical bills like you wouldn't believe) Harold the guinea pig excaped (I give him a one in five chance of survival if he made it outside the fence) and now with this bird I'm not very happy.

Do you have any sort of small platform, shelf, or something the baby can hide under? If he is 3 weeks, he still needs to be fed by mom or dad. If he is 4 weeks, you can take him out and put him in a cage by himself if he keeps getting attacked, you will just have to take some extra time and make sure he learns to eat on his own. Put small sprigs of millet, softened seeds (you can soak them for 24 hours and feed them then), or slightly crushed seeds so he doesn't have to de-hull the whole thing, cooked foods like Beak Appetit or Krazy Korn, etc. in a dish on the floor of his cage. At that age he is probably not afraid of you, so you can even feed him millet by hand. Is he the only baby? It sounds like dad wants to mate again and wants the little bird out of the nest box so he can. If you can find some type of protection for the little guy you can try leaving him in the cage with the parents, and still put foods in the bottom of the cage. If you have a bird ladder, put that in so that it comes up near some type of perches so he can leave the bottom of the cage and get around. I don't know what kind of cage you have, but on some of them the plastic tray that makes up the bottom of the cage is too deep for a new baby to be able to reach up to the bars, and unless they figure out how to flap their way up to grab the bars of the cage, he might feel stuck on the bottom.

I am sorry you lost your guinea pig and am especially sorry you haven't been well either. It seems like when it rains it pours, doesn't it?

awww thinking of you ad the chick paddles  hopefully things will start to look brighter for you very soon.
