Is My Budgie Sick?

Featured Replies

Here goes: my budgie Sqweakie is aprox. 1 year old, she was a gift from my sis. Here is what 's happening. #1 she is opening her beak as if she were going to make a chip, but nothing comes out.nShe appears to be chewing then opens wide as if trying to swollow something. Then she will scatch her face with her little foot. But thats not enough she then goes to the cage bars and begins to rub her beak and face into the bars, followed be some head shaking. She isn't being her usuall bossy self always trying to bite my fingers when I put new food or water in her cage and making that Dolphin noise. Her poo looks normal and she is eating but she seems to be sleepy as she will be sitting there with her eyes kinda open and kind of shut. This isn't normal for her she is very active and possesive of her domain. I noticed that she did sleep more today then ever did before. This could be my fault as I stay up late at night and she is usually awake because of the noise I make. To boot my husband gets up super early 3:30 AM to go to work. Could this be making her sick also. Any advise or info would be heaven sent. I get this awful feeling in my gut every time I think she might be sick. I will be calling her vet tomorrow, but in the meantime if you all could help. :angel1:

The scratching and rubbing head on the bars i would think is pretty normal. My budgie does that especially if he's moulting. However, the change in personality seems a bit off and could be an early sign that she's feeling a bit low. It's great that you're going to be in contact with your vet as that is what everyone here will suggest, take her to a vet. You know her best so if you think she's not herself then a trip to the vet is a very good idea. In the meantime just keep her warm. Hope she's alright.

yes i hope all is okay

Let us know what the Vet says, please.

I hope she will be okay

Cindy

Deffinately, first and formost, the trip to the vet is vital. I do hope she is okay.

It sounds like your budgie has quite a disrupted sleep routine, is it unavoidable that your husband goes into her room when he's leaving for work? Is there another room perhaps that she could be placed in at night for a peaceful undisturbed rest? If she is poorly, sleep will be vital to her. Do you or your husband smoke around her? Birds have such fragile and complex airways that smoke can play havoc with them. Also, use of chemical cleaners like polosh, window cleaner, shake and vac, air fresheners (especially Fabreze apparently) can all be potentially fatal to any bird. You may well be aware of all of this, but I always think its worth sharing anyway.

Please let us know how she gets on at the vet, we worry about our members birds as though they were our own on here!

Best of luck,

Anne

It sounds like she has a husk in her throat. If this is the case she will get rid of it.

So long as she isn't shaking her head left to right. This is the throwing up action.

I agree with the others to get her check out.

Check her frequently, you may find her okay now.

hope all goes well at the vets. youve been given some great advice here B)

i would just like to add - budgies need at least 10 hours of sleep a night. so its a good idea to cover the cage with a dark sheet at the same time every night and uncover the cage at the same time every morning. erratic routines can cause budgies to 'stress moult' so thats why a lot of people do this. i also move my budgies to a quiet room where there is no noise or light from the TV or anything.
