Posted October 25, 200519 yr What a weekend! Trapped by our guy into a shoe box. Taped in tight. Transported in a car - notwithstanding our complaints and attempts to bounce the box off the seat. Let go into...... WOW! This is kinda cool! Apparently the old fireplace in his office will not get used. But the chimmney recess is warm because the flue of the office boiler runs behind the wall. A new home for the winter. 5 ft wide, 6 ft tall and 2 foot deep. Lined with bamboo curtain, decorated with reptile tank plants and with our grape vine perches moved in from our summer aviary. That silver trellis across the top of the picture is carrying the Union Pacific Streamliner in "N" scale which runs around the office at eye level. We can't get at it because there is Plexiglas across the inside top of the cage - I guess to prevent our poop getting on the tracks. The railroad from our viewpoint. We love the little canary nests he gets us from the pet store. They make great perches or little places to lie down - and when we get bored of them - we peck them to pieces. But he still hangs our millet in mid air to make it hard to get at. Something about keeping us trim and fit. The floor has our usual pellet bowl, greens bowl and water bath (waiting for warm water). That box in the corner might be worth exploring when our ceres get blue and brown again ;-) Here we are on the right side of the cage. From top to bottom and left to right - Clyde (always likes to be highest), Jeeves (the guy), Wooster (grumpy), Bonnie (the Mom last winter) - and well we don't know who this is - (s)he showed up with the new cage. Youngster with clipped wings - can do controlled crashes but can't get into the air yet - has to climb the wire - but good at it. Nice color and waiting for a name we guess. We hung out on the perch to make it welcome - just a youngster away from home for the first time. Bonnie with the new guy - waiting for a name. The cat has briefly been over to check us out - but she can't even get on the top of this aviary so quickly went back to her basket in the office window. THe guy who feeds us seems really pleased because the whole set up only cost him US$60 and some time to make up our new space and we REALLY like it. When he leaves the office - he leaves us on the music........ Big Band and swing and Benny Goodman's clarinet - we sing along to. Dave Edmunds Rockpile - we complain about - rather loudly! Now BAGPIPES! We just discovered we LOVE Great Highland Bagpipes - we really sing along to them! So help us name our new pal. Edited October 25, 200519 yr by graemesmith
October 25, 200519 yr Great Set up there, and good looking birds. How bout calling the newbie - Bigeyes?
October 25, 200519 yr graemesmith what a great Set up. I am now envious. Note: Topic Moved to correct location
October 25, 200519 yr Wow! I bet they get quite a few of your workmates visiting them! And what a pleasant way to brighten up and cheer up your workplace! Lucky birds
October 25, 200519 yr Now that is neat. What a fantastic idea! And the birds are just beautiful. But aren't you worried they will chew up the bamboo curtain?
October 25, 200519 yr But aren't you worried they will chew up the bamboo curtain? The curtain was remarkably cheap - about $10. The Little canary nest baskets are their favourite chewing item though. And if they do - so what - I can either move the greenery or get more. As long as they are happy! October 25, 200519 yr Your setup looks great. I'm sure they are all happy there. Did they adjust to being moved quickly?
October 26, 200519 yr Did they adjust to being moved quickly? A couple of factors at work here. I regularly (about every three months) significantly move their cage furniture around in order to keep life "interesting". Like in the wild when they flock to new places after stripping the current one bare. I use perches kept in storage and switch them out and change heights and positions. The food and water however remain on the ground - like in real life. They never seem to be bored, and never play with toys. Between each other and the new environment they stay plenty busy checking things out. The move consisted of boxing them and quickly removing the perches they had been on from their summer aviary. Quick car ride to office, set up the perches they had just got off and release them from the box. They spent about a couple of hours at the top of the cage as high as they could go looking down on things and then climbed down and resumed life as normal - with the help of a low hanging millet to entice them down. They have since been wandering around the whole place doing the usual explore routine. It took them about 36 hours to decide to try the cage floor and the pellet bowl again but they now seem totally happy with the whole affair. The "NEW GUY" factor has also kept them busy. Between cuddling up to it and then playing "tail nip" with it they have been busy bouncing around. I picked the new guy because I liked the color but also after watching their behaviour at the aviary. New guy was pretty good at defending himself if others came on to him - but he was not a bully. The others have all tried it on with him to see how he behaves. He stands up to them and they have backed off. He gets to eat at the food bowl with them too. I'm pretty sure if they could articulate it they would tell you the worst part was the box and the car ride.
February 22, 200619 yr great setup! how do they do with the reptile plants? do the eat them? i have tried real plant in my aviary, and they just tear them to shreads!
