Big Budgies

I took Greeny down to the vets (avian) on Monday. She developed a funny sneeze. He thought it was just a small respiratory infection and gave her an antibiotic shot. She is going great. He gave her the once over and weight her at 40 grams. Told me that she was in good order.

He weighed her by puting her in a paper bag and then on the scales. The bag was well ventilated and the darkness calmed her down.

Here is her Stats.

Hi Daz, just had a look at your website. Top Class

Thanks Paul.H I've got to get around to tidying it some more. :D

Daz, very glad she is on the mend. :)

Thanks Rainbow. She has been in Isolation from the other bids all week. They have been on probotics. Can't give a bird antibiotics and probotics at the same time. She can go back into the Avairy tomorrow.

Hey just a thought ....... if you go to an Itilian resturant and order Pasta and Antipatsa do you get full :P

I have never thought of weighing my budgies

It's good to every so often weight them so if you think they are losing weight you have something to go by.

My budgies range between 34 to 57 grams. That a big difference. I know that if Spangle who is 57 comes in at 44 than I have a problem. Also if Chirpy comes in at 40 grams I know that he is putting on weight. He is currently 34 grams.

what does your scales look like Daz how do you get them on it? Like the vet did? I think I need to head out and get a set for myself. Jangles would be a heavyweight budgie, he likes to pig out on the food all the time :glare: The others are always so busy they keep the same shape all the time.

The ones I have I got from Big W. Just electronic ones for baking. I can zero them to add things. I have a carry cage to transport the birds if need be. All I do is put the cage on the scales and zero them and then put the bird in and read the amount. Easy. If you don't have a scale that can be zeroed. just place the bird in a paper bag and then weight it. The bag can be weighted afterwards and the weight subtracted from the original. :)

George, Angel and Chirpy are happy to just hope on and let me weight them. :D

Nerwen, I have a gram scale like they use at the vets. This is what it looks like. I got it from Drs. Foster and Smith website here in the US, but I didn't find it on their site anymore. This link is more expensive. :) Anyway, if you can find something like it - it is a very good scale. It weighs in ounces and grams, and has two tops you can use, depending upon if your bird will sit on the T-stand for weighing or not. I use the flat one and tare a plastic tub and lid on it, then weigh my birds. No math involved that way, LOL.

Awe poor homer is 150gms what will I do

I can just imagine homer in a pair of tights Doh!

Diet Time for Hommer.

Try Friut and Vegtables and Finch Seed mix.

Add two drops of cold Press non Homoginised Garlic oil to the Seed mix.

This is very nutricious and good for them. It will also bring them back in weight in a correct way.

As the vet said that gave me this diet. They will be lean mean and *****. ...and ready for breeding. :P

Aww, poor Hommer. Diet time!! :P Lot's of exercise and healthy foods. Does he fly around much or just sit/lay around?

I have to admit that every time I see that picture my heart breaks. You may not realize it, but that budgie is suffering and in a way, allowing him to get this heavy is neglect. I'd go as far as to say it's not much better than letting an animal starve to death.

Please take him in, get him to the vet and work out what kind of diet is best for him. He may be an older bird but that doesn't mean he should be left in this condition. As long as he still has a life an attempt should be made to improve it.

If you need any advice on how to go about getting him back in shape, we're all here to help as much as we can. I do urge you to pay a visit to the vet first though. There could be an underlying reason that has resulted in the weight gain. He doesn't look like a happy, healthy budgie at all.

Hommer, are you sure about the 150 grams? I truly don't see how it is possible for a budgie to weigh anywhere near that much. :D

Aww, poor Hommer. Diet time!! :D Lot's of exercise and healthy foods. Does he fly around much or just sit/lay around?

Well I got him off an old lady who passed away and he was old then id say he would be about 15 years old he does fly around very slowly and I have notice that ?What the? feeds him like a male feeds a female

Maybe he is having a hard time chewing the seed and that?s why ?What the? is helping out

He was weighed on electronic scales at 150grams Agro comes in at 110grams and most my others are in the 50 to 100 range

As for exercise I think he would have a stroke if I made him fly around all day

Sometimes you go into the cage and he looks dead as

But a little tickles under the chin and he?s up and at em

:D

Budgies do sometimes slow down and gain weight as they get older, and there are medical reasons for weight gain too. Terri, I don't agree with your statement about neglect, I believe this picture was originally posted for another reason and has been taken out of context here. Wasn't he just playing and actually taught another bird to "hide" like that too? He certainly doesn't look that heavy, I have a bird that looks heavier than that in some pictures and is nowhere near 150 grams. 15 years is an old budgie Hommer. I'm glad to see a budgie that old - it doesn't happen very often. :)

Even if he isn't 150 grams, he's not having a very easy time getting around.

Denying an animal vet care is a form of neglect. Maybe nothing can be done and it's just old age but isn't it best to find out? Lying down this way isn't a form of play, it's not a natural behavior. I think it has been misinterpretted.

And if the budgie's problem is that he is just overweight, it can be reversed. Even if exercise isn't an option, a better diet could possibly help or meal feeding him instead of free feeding.

I know hommer didn't allow it to happen on purpose but that doesn't mean nothing should be done to try and improve the situation.

I know this isnt probably relevant but my Candy lies down on his landing platform and sometimes sleeps that way on a side with his legs in the air, the first time I saw him do it I swear I thought he was dead, he still does it now not often but there are times like yesterday morning.

Piper has a habit of lying down on the floor of the cage to take naps but at the same time, she's not overweight, definitely not to the point that she can't move.

And maybe it has been taken out of context, I don't know. But I know that this isn't the first picture of Homer lying like this and it's worried me when I've seen it. Especially if he is very overweight.

Yeah Candy was a lot overweight but he isnt as much now and doesnt have difficulty getting around at all more like me catching up with him these days.

Maybe Homer needs to get stuck into a big bowl of spinach and carrot mix.

As hommer says

I have notice that ?What the? feeds him like a male feeds a female

Maybe he is having a hard time chewing the seed and that?s why ?What the? is helping out

If Hommer (the budgie) need help to feed himself, How do you put him on a diet? :D

I think Hommer is doing a great job with Hommer to have Hommer at such an old age.;)

Denying an animal vet care is a form of neglect.

I don't think there is any neglect here.

If Homer needs help feeding himself, he needs to see a vet.

People have gone to jail over not taking a sick animal (regardless of age) to the vet.

Though, let me point out that I'm not saying hommer should go to jail! I'm not. I just wish that the budgie (if it is that overweight and does lie down like that quite often/doesn't move around much) could get a professional opinion. What's so wrong with that?

:D Well Here He is today ;):
