Posted October 22, 200519 yr On tuesday night I found one of my baby budgies making squeaking noises when it was breathing. I pulled it out of its cage and it couldn't tweet, fly or bite, it could only run on the floor. these were its only symptons, so i thought it might have a cold and kept it warm during the night in a small cage in my room, but she got worse during the night and i picked her up when she started coughing up blood and stopped breathing. Its so sad to helplessly watch a budgie die. :rip: I have 7 other budgies, 2 are babies(month old) in a seperate cage. I don't know what would have caused this, but I've since treated the water with anti fungal and algae solution. They all seem fine, I just don't want any more to get sick. any suggestions?
October 22, 200519 yr That's a terrible thing to happen. I have no idea what could have caused it but it would be a good idea to get some poo samples tested by a vet to see if anything shows up. Taking the other birds to the vet for a check up would probably be a good idea too.
October 22, 200519 yr medictaing thr birds yourself when you dont now what caused it is not a good idea. i suggest a vet visit for the rest of the birds, especially as your sick bird went downhill so quickly. it would be awful for you to lose any more. it could have been anything - severe infections in the crop or digestive tract can cause ulceration and thats what the coughing up blood might have been. if its possible for the vet to do a post mortem of the sick budgie that would determine the cause and tell you whether the other birds are at risk or not.
October 22, 200519 yr Hello Poida, welcome to the forum, so sorry to hear your news. As Bea and Pixie say it would be a good idea to get an avian vets advice on this matter to rule out any nasty disease. Thoughts are with you.
