Posted October 20, 200519 yr Hey everyone, I have two budgies, Feliz and Mrs, also known as Mr.Sprint and Mrs.Sprinty. Don't ask.... :rip: Mrs.Sprinty has recently gotten ill. Her feces have changed...they are a little runny, and the solid part is a bit "goopier" and has the dark colour and white mixed together, instead of the dark part in the center. (so much poop talk!) Anyways, she is also breathing a bit strangely occaisionally...she pants lightly. But this isn't at all times. She isn't fluffed up, and she's eating and drinking. She's chirping, and jumping around, and climbing on the bars of her cage. She is in a seperate cage from Feliz at the moment, and I'm treating her with Ornacyclin. My avian vet isn't in until Sunday and I was hoping that until then, I might be able to find an effective home remedy. Here are two pictures I took of her yesterday: I'm worried....I work at a Petstore, and three of our budgies were displaying the same symptoms. We isolated them in seperate cages in the back, and they got better without much help from us, aside from mild antibiotics in their water. Could this be catchy, and could I have carried it home to my birds? If so, should I just keep treating as I am, as this is most likely it, and it will get better? I'm pretty worried...should I take a picture of the bottom of her cage, for a second opinion on the state of her feces? (What a strange question! :(Laughing out loud): ) Thanks in Advance, Devon
October 20, 200519 yr Her butt looks balder than normal. It also looks kinda messy. The only thing i could suggest is take her to an avian vet as soon as you can. Hope she's okay.

I think she pulled some feathers out while grooming and trying to pull the poo off...it doesn't look that bad anymore, for some reason. It looks a little less bald. I'll post new pictures later...I need to buy batteries!
October 20, 200519 yr If she's had poo stuck to her bottom, that's usually a sign of an illness. Do post some more pictures, and of her poop, Eterri or someone should be on later who might know! But she does need an avian vet as soon as you can, have you made the appointment, just in case he fills up quick?

October 20, 200519 yr Let us know what the vet says. Lin's right, it's definitely a sign of illness and if it bothered her enough to pluck the feathers, it must be extremely uncomfortable. Unfortunately, most budgie diseases all share the same symptoms so it's not really possible to say what it is based on that. The vet should run tests that will give you some answers though. Good luck!
October 20, 200519 yr Het butt looks the same as Tobis without the poop. She plucked hers out but I found the cause it was some food she was eating. Have yours had a change of diet, just a thought.

Hm, Kind of...the main diet is still the same, but I bought them some treat seed bars? Could that cause this? She's in the bathroom, and I have the temp at 80 degrees. I'm really afraid that she'll die before the weekend!
October 20, 200519 yr Boomberry's budgie had no other symptoms. Since your budgie has shown some other symptoms, it's probably not the treat and she should be seen by a vet as soon as possible. It's great that you're keeping her warm. When is her appointment? I hope it goes well!

It's great that you're keeping her warm. When is her appointment? I hope it goes well! She seems to be breathing better now that she's warm, and I ran the shower for a bit and made it slightly humid which really got her going. She seemed to really like the fog, she was dancing, and it was quite warm. I stopped after thinking the humidity might be bad for her...am I right, or is it okay? I am having troubles with the vet thing...I'm 17 and work for minimum wage at a Petstore, and my mom said she'd pay for the appointment. Today we got a call from our vet, and our schnauzer's blood work is back...he needs teeth surgery, AGAIN, which will be 500 bucks. My mom is now NOT wanting to take the budgie to the vet. So, I had to call and cancel the appointment...but then I took out the phone book and called EVERY VET in the CITY and wrote down all of the initial exam costs. Everyone was around 50-60 dollars, but I found one vet that starts at 25. I made an appointment there as they just hired a doctor that treats birds (yay! Another avian vet!) . Then I called Canada Savings Bond and told them to send my savings bond...so much for saving! It's 179 dollars, and it will be here next week. I also told my parents to NOT buy me an ipod for my birthday in November, and instead help me pay for the vet fees, which I think they're going for. I might have to borrow money from a friend and pay them back when the savings bond comes...but either way, she has an appointment for tomorrow. Ah, money complicates things so much! I guess my bunny is going to have to wait yet another couple of months to get spayed..... ...Oh well, atleast that wont kill her. Also, I was worried that it was something in the cage that made her sick, so I lugged it off into the bathroom (ripping the new carpet in the process, my mom's going to be pleased) and sprayed it with hot water and bleach. I'm still not done, it's really awkward, and I've pretty much soaked the bathroom floor! Is there anything else I should do? Also, this is off topic, but just out of curiosity...their cage is 4 feet long, 2 feet wide, and 2 feet high...how many birds could comfortably live in there? They come out, and have a play place on the top that has the same dimensions of their cage floor, obviously. Edited October 20, 200519 yr by TheSprintys
October 20, 200519 yr I'm sorry, I can't help with your queries, but someone else will be on who can. I jsut have to say how much I admire you, and how lucky your budgie is to have you. You are doing absolutely everything for your little friend, I know many people that wouldn't do so much for their kids! Your an absolute :angel1: , and I hope your parents are very proud of what a compassionate, thoughtful and caring person you are :budgiedance:
October 21, 200519 yr A little bit of humidity is fine for her. :budgiedance: I do admire all the things you are doing to take care of your birds. You obviously love them very much. Your cage is great! It won't even fit in the tub! I think you could fit 4 - 6 birds very comfortably in there, maybe more depending upon how the perching areas are sorted out.

Your an absolute :angel1: , and I hope your parents are very proud of what a compassionate, thoughtful and caring person you are :budgiedance: Heh, thanks, but I don't even think much of it anymore. As far as I see it, my animals are my kids. They're sentient...they suffer and feel pain, and feel emotions, just like (well, differently, but you know what I mean) we do. I wouldn't let a kid suffer through this, and I know that birds are a lot more delicate then kids....haha. I took her in knowing that she could get sick, and I figure I should keep up with my responsibilities. Plus, I'm used to vet bills. I rescue animals....I have the two budgies, two ducks, two whites tree frogs, a red tail boa, a ball python, a rose hair tarantula, a blood parrot cichlid, a black convict cichlid, four dogs, seven guinea pigs, two gerbils (plus ten breeders, but they don't count as they're not rescues), three rabbits, three rats, 2 millipedes, 8 bettas, 1 warty newt, 1 hamster, 2 mice, 3 catfish of different types, a synodontis euruptus catfish, three red eye tetras, 4 dwarf frogs, and a bullfrog. The snakes, one of the frogs, the newts, the tarantula, and three of the guinea pigs have gone to the vet...as well as the dogs, of course, but I don't have to pay there bills. So yeah, I'm used to being moneyless. Hahaha. I figure it's going to be like this the rest of my life...I'm planning to start a farm/domestic animal sanctuary so I forsee a lot more vet bills! And just so you guys can curse the name of the family that had her before.... This is the cage she lived in for a year, from the time she came home from the petstore as a baby, so she wasn't able to develop her muscles. She can't fly now, because of it. They had two other birds in a similar cages, all apart from eachother. They didn't like the noise they made when together in one larger cage, so they seperated them all. THey called to eachother all the time, but couldn't see eachother. I couldn't convince them to give me the other birds to, they wanted this one gone because "she screeches to much, for some reason." October 21, 200519 yr There are so many people who feel that animals don't count you are still to be commended. I also rescue birds, and know of the cruelties inflicted upon them. It's the most awful feeling when you can't take them, isn't it? At least you got one away from that home, so that's better than none. We love pictures, do you want to post some of your other pets in offtopic chatter?
October 21, 200519 yr :budgiedance: How could anyone keep a bird like that! And you have a lot of pets!! i'm so jealous....except for the spider and the millipedes...would love the snakes though!
October 21, 200519 yr Well, I'm just about to leave for the vet! I'll tell you how it goes as soon as I get back.
October 21, 200519 yr Only just caught up with this topic-I really hope it's good news, you deserve it.
October 21, 200519 yr Alrighty, we're home, and it's good news...I guess She looked at her, listened to her heart and such, weighed her (she's 45 grams) and examed her poo and such. She told me everything that it wasn't...it wasn't a wasting disease, it's not cancer, and it's not a billion other things. She wasn't exactly sure WHAT'S going on...but she said that she looked pretty good, and was acting normally (you should have seen her, she was being a little turkey! Jumping from shoulder to shoulder and dragging syringes around, throwing them off the table ) She said that she thinks we caught it early enough, so if we just give her antibiotics, it'll probably clear up. She gave me Chlor-Palm (banana flavored, I just want to eat it, it smells like icecream ) for her, and I have to give her .2mls twice a day for ten days. She has to go back in on monday for a check up. She also said that she could go back with feliz, and to just put a general mild antibiotic (from the petstore) in their water while she's being treated. So yes! I'm happy we went. Picture time! Grooming time <3 On a sad note, I also had to bring my ratties along with me to the vet. Bigger (one of the rats) has had a tumor his whole life, but in this past month, it ballooned to epic proportions. The vet said it was inoperable. This past week, his quality of life finally declined...he was grunting and wheezing and having a lot of trouble eating. He lost a lot of weight. We talked to the vets, and figured it was time to put him down. It was so insanely sad, he was such a sweetheart, and he was still so active...I felt horrible. They wanted to just inject the "euthanasia stuff" into his belly, but I insisted on a sedative first. I held him for about half an hour as he fell asleep, and they injected him then. He opened his eyes, but he wasn't in pain...he just drifted off as I held him. I don't know why my family takes so many pictures..... We like to document all of the animals, and everything that happens, because so many come through our house all the time. So, goodbye Bigger <3 We'll miss you.... Oh, and I almost forgot. The vet found a wierd skin growth that she called a "Skin Tag" by the base of Mrs.Sprints tail. She said that they're very common in birds, and that it's not posing a problem and doesn't have to be removed. Has anyone heard of this?
October 22, 200519 yr Oh, poor Bigger, but he looks so peaceful, and you made the toughest, but the most loving decision of all, to let him go to a better place. Regarding the skin tag, never heard of it, would like to know more if some clever clogs on here can tell us. Sounds like you have the cheekiest budgie out, being so naughty at the vets! And banana flavoured! Mmm. I can remember when the doctor wanted to stop giving me flavoured antibiotics, and start me on tablets. Wouldn't let him! I used to love the flavoured antibiotics! Let us know how your birds get on!
October 22, 200519 yr Poor Bigger. He does look peaceful though. Glad there's nothing too wrong with Mrs Sprinty. :rip:
October 22, 200519 yr I have that fear that she missed something though, although I'm probably just being paranoid....I wish she knew exactly what was wrong, so I could research it, and feel useful 0_0 Oh, and could someone tell me how to properly administer the banana chlor palm by syringe, into her mouth? I know it sounds simple, but I'm afraid of choking her, or it going into her lungs, or something. Edited October 22, 200519 yr by TheSprintys
October 22, 200519 yr Oh what a sad picture that was.I've been in that position so know exactly what you were feeling inside. Glad to hear it doesn't sound too bad with your birdies-they do like to worry us don't they!
October 22, 200519 yr let her bite on your thumb and hold her upright in a teatowel when dripping them into her mouth, not so that she is tilting backwards or on her back. its easier with two people. one holding her in the teatowel and one opening her beak by letting her bite down on your thumb. sorry to hear about your rat, but you definitely did the best thing you could for him. keep us posted x

She won't bite down on my thumb, she just shakes her head back and forth, like a stubborn baby you're trying to feed. Should I use the "Here comes the airplane" trick?
